 Â
Religious Visual Culture: Artifact, Practice, Paradigm
 Â
Abstract: Over the last two decades the theorization of vision has led art historians, anthropologists, scholars of film and media, and others to develop a large and sophisticated body of literature. But a comparatively small aspect of that work has been devoted to the study of religious seeing, what I’ve called ‘visual piety,’ that is, acts of looking that are themselves religious acts. If the nomenclature ‘visual culture’ has achieved a broad acceptance among scholars, what exactly that terms means and what significance it has for the study of images and visual practice, remains to be clarified. This talk will propose a number of definitions and consider several instances of the visual fields that structure religious seeing, or what may be called the visual construction of the sacred.

Good Evening: I received a letter note today (Wednesday, February 27, 2007) from a David Morgan postedmarked from the Netherlands. I would like him to contact me regarding the letter note because I am not aware of any recent correspondence with David Morgan; possibly David could provide me some cliarification upon the matter presented in the letter. I appreciate your swift attention to this matter. Thank you very much. Truly, Clarissa Hudson
