Party Formations

Invitation for
Party Formations
A seminar on dance events and the making of meaning
Friday 28, September 2007

In view of a research project on dance culture by social scientists from the Meertens Instituut and the VU University, both at Amsterdam, we organize a one-day seminar entitled ‘Party Formations’, in which experts on dance are invited to join the research team in thinking about the contents and practical aspects of this research. In this seminar we will explore what kind of research is needed and which specific research questions have to be posed for the disclosure of the political, moral and religious meanings of dance, and in particular, for the ways in which dance could be shaping identities and world views of ‘dancers’ and ravers. You are kindly invited to attend this seminar.

Jesus Camp

“there are two kinds of people in the world: those who love Jesus and those who don’t”

Evangelicals, according to the dominant stereotype, will propagandyze, proselytize and they have a political agenda. The documentary Jesus Camp has all the ingredients to confirm this opinion: they are pro Bush, pro life/anti abortion, teach their children creationism in stead of evolution, they are anti gay and battle in the culture war for political power and influence all the way to and in the white house.

Religionstylebook.org is an online guide created for journalists who report on religion. Yet it is also a useful online source for those trying to read and understand the articles written by journalists in newspapers and magazines. So if you get lost in reading an article on religion in Iraq, or if you need clear definitions of the many ‘new’ religions today (neo-paganism, neo-evangelicalism, neo-pentecostalism, neo-orthodoxy, new age), try this dictionary.

The German journal Der Spiegel has just published a special issue on religion and politics. Visit their website for the table of contents.
