During a debate at Georgetown University’s Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding a delegation of representatives from the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) was present. They spoke about the FJP’s vision for Egypt and a recent announcement that leading Muslim Brotherhood member Khairat al-Shater would run for president, despite earlier pledges by the party not to participate in the election. They also responded to questions from the audience.

In 1993 Huntington published his influential thesis the Clash of Civilizations? When used in political rhetoric combined with atrocities such as 9/11 messages such as these become seemingly incontestable because reality is reduced in such a way as to be seen as inherent in the way things are.

De premoderne horden van David Pinto

Pinto stelt hier een ideaalbeeld van de Nederlandse samenleving tegenover alle mogelijk negatieve stereotyperingen van de allochtoon. Het is wensdenken wat Pinto hier doet. Ja, het is heel erg met die allochtonen. En ‘wij’ zijn dus echt superieur ten opzichte van die pre-moderne horden. Niet de slechte integratie van allochtone jongeren is het probleem; figuren als Pinto zijn onderdeel van het probleem.
