In this lecture prof. Esack will engage with the topic of Islamism (‘political Islam’) and how it relates to Islamic liberation theology, which is also politically engaged.After the recent terrorist attacks in France and Austria, more and more politicians and opinion makers are talking about fighting Islamism. But what exactly is Islamism?
Farid Esack is a professor of Islamic studies at the University of Johannesburg, writer and political activist. He serves in the leadership of Africa4Palestine and was involved in the South African anti-apartheid struggle. He was appointed Commissioner for Gender Equality by Nelson Mandela and is also known for his work in interfaith dialogue.
Fahm Institute is a Dutch knowledge and education center with a holistic approach to traditional and academic knowledge of and about Islam.
The Department of Islamstudies at the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies of the Radboud University, focuses on the study of Islam in the formative period as well as on its contemporary social, cultural, and political expressions in both the Middle East and Europe.
