Leuke nieuw internetsnufje: MSN search nieuws. Kun je zoeken in allerhande nieuwsbronnen. Bijvoorbeeld het invoeren van het woord “religie” levert 33 hits uit dagbladen als Trouw, AD, de Telegraaf, de Gazet van Antwerpen etc.

Nog leuker: je kunt van je zoekactie een rss-feed maken — handig als je het nieuws dagelijks bij wilt houden. Lees op frisse wind hoe je dat kunt doen.

Zegt de ene vraagstelling tegen de andere:
“En? Heb jij al een conclusie?”
Waarop de andere vraagstelling zegt:
“Nee, er komt geen eind aan.”

Hoogleraar milieueconomie van de Vrij Universiteit, Jeroen van den Bergh, heeft een frontale aanval op de theologie geopend in een opiniestuk in de Ad Valvas (13 januari 2005), het huisblad van de VU. Hij reageert hierin op een eerder stuk van de godsdienstfilosoof Wessel Stoker, ook aan de VU werkzaam.

Volgens JvdB hanteert de theologie “centrale begrippen die ongedefinieerd en onmeetbaar zijn.” Voor ongelovigen en wetenschappers is het “onverteerbaar dat dit soort pseudo-wetenschap anno 2005 onderdeel maakt van de universiteit.” JvdB’s tirade gaat nog een tijdje door met dergelijke boude stellingen: religies zouden gelovigen “jarenlang indoctrineren” en vooral “arme en ongeletterde mensen” worden makkelijk overtuigd van de religieuze “sprookjes en onwaarheden”.

I’m now busy writing the last chapter of my dissertation. After years of hard work, i finally discover I could have done it in days! Prices starting from $100,- ! At first I was a little critical, but then I read this in their FAQ:

Critics [= people who did study for their degree]. Why you should ignore them
…. These are people who have frittered away years in classrooms absorbing blindly and thoughtlessly second hand information in a theoretical environment completely removed from real life, and for what? In order to acquire the right to use the same Title or post-nominal letters that you can legally acquire in a matter of days for the price a meal in a decent restaurant.

That’s me they’re describing! Gash, I must learn to prioritize better…

Trouw heeft afgelopen zaterdag een artikel gewijd aan reliblogs. Weblogs over religie, dus. Conclusie: de meeste blogs zijn saaie, weinig geupdate (excusez moi voor het nederengels), navelstaarderige monologen over niks. Tja, gelukkig stond mijn blog niet in de lijst! Hehe, wel trouwens de redactie van Trouw op de hoogte gebracht van het bestaan van mijn blog en die van de andere leden van religionresearch.org. Met name de blog van martijn mogen ze eigenlijk niet missen. Ik ken weinig bloggers die zo goed het nieuws bijhouden en ingevoerd zijn in hun onderwerp als Martijn.

Update

Ondertussen (27 januari 2005) zijn de blogs van religionresearch.org toegevoegd aan de Trouw religblog lijst.

I got a reply by Razib on my earlier post on the book For the Glory of God by Rodney Stark. In this post I cite figures that come from Stark’s book, and are reproduced on Razib’s website. I post his reply here, because I think his remarks are a good basis for further discussion of Stark’s book.

I am reading the book For the Glory of God. How Monotheism led to reformations, science, witch-hunts, and the end of slavery. In this book Stark tries to debunk several theories that state that religion has a bad influence on science, morality and rationality in general. Especially the chapter on religion and science is interesting, and sometimes outright hilarious. According to Stark the idea that religion is bad for science has been proposed as a part of an ideological campaign against religion by ‘Englightened’ philosophers and scientists. In reality, science has often benefited from religion.
