Elaine Howard Ecklund published an interesting blogpost on the religiosity of scientists on SSRC’s The Immanent Frame weblog. The post is based on research she already has published about in Social Problems (54:2, 2007). She however does not talk about her research findings too much, but instead argues how universities could better facilitate the public discussion on religion and science. A must read for anyone interested in religion, which probably involves all of you who made it here and read this post And of course congratulations to Elaine about being asked to publish on such a prestigious weblog.

Is religie goed voor de samenleving? Dit is de vraag die ik voor deze lezing meekreeg. Ik mag vanuit mijn eigen expertise op deze vraag in gaan, aldus dhr. Kurtzahn. Dat zal ik zeker doen, want ik denk dat de vraag anders onbeantwoordbaar is. Want als we er eens dieper over na gaan denken: wat is religie eigenlijk?

Ook het woord “goed” brengt ons in de problemen. Wat is eigenlijk goed? Jezus zei: “niemand is goed dan God alleen” – en zelfs dat wordt door sommige mensen betwijfeld. Feit is dat iedereen zo zijn eigen opvattingen heeft over wat goed is. En dat maakt het beantwoorden van de vraag “is religie goed voor de samenleving” ingewikkeld. Read the rest of this entry »

I have just read Religion in the public sphere by Jürgen Habermas. In this article Habermas discusses several views on the use of religious arguments in the public sphere. It is an interesting, but contested article. Read the rest of this entry »

Samen met een aantal collega’s heb ik vier studentenonderzoeken naar migrantenkerken in Amsterdam begeleid. Gisteren was de presentatie van het boek dat het resultaat van dit onderzoek is: “Migranten in Mokum”. Aardig is dat het veel aandacht in de pers heeft gekregen:
