Salafism can be seen as a transnational movement; originating in the Middle East it has acquired a more global outlook with local characteristics in Africa, Asia, America’s and Europe. This of course fuels the discourse of the Middle East as a hotbed for radicals but less well known is that there is a reverse influence as well. Salafis from other continents travelling to the Middle East, as is explored by journalist Alexander Weissink in a recent article.

Eigenheid of eigenzinnigheid.

Taqwacore is a fusion of piety and hardcore punk. The name is derived from Michael Muhammad Knight’s novel The Taqwacores that tells the story of Yusuf Ali. His house, and that of several of his companions, is a safe haven for punk parties and for Muslims. What they share is that they seem to be ‘pissed off about everything’ (parents, society, politicians, religious authorities you name it) and trying to resist homogenizing labelling (such as progressive, punk, radical, gay, Arab) of Muslims.

***UPDATED***

Even if Ramadan made all those controversial statements, why wouldn’t he be the right man for a dialogue? In fact it appears now that the frequent attacks on him are more dangerous for his position as a person for dialogue than his statements. In particular because he is not only under attack from Dutch secularists and anti-islamists but also from radical groups who oppose his cooperation with Dutch authorities and his statements about homosexuality and his call for a moratorium on corporate punishment. According to these critics Ramadan sells himself to the Dutch authorities which inevitable means that he will have to adjust (in their view dilute) the Islamic message. Their interpretation seems to be correct due to this controversy.

Khalid Yasin is in the Netherlands again. His style can be seen as a combination of Malcolm X (in his later days), Evangelical preachers and Salafi preachers. He is also a controversial figure as a quick scan on several websites such as Salafi Burnout and SheikhYermami.com and the documentary Undercover Mosque of Channel 4 tells us.

Moroccan adolescents – more Muslim than Moroccan
Given the negative reporting about Islam, you wouldn’t expect adolescents to be happy to identify with it. However, that is exactly what’s happening, research by Susan Ketner of a large number of Moroccan adolescents has revealed. They often deliberately choose to emphasize their Muslim identity. This supports them and [...]
