Dit zocht en vond ik vandaag

Denkend over de diepere dingen des levens, ’s morgens in het stille park - het was geen zeven nog en bovendien een zondag; niemand op straat behalve een persoon met een hond - verschijnt er plots een waterhoen. Niets aan de hand, zou je zeggen. Als ‘t een beetje meezit, kom je ze alle dagen tegen. Zo ook vandaag, maar het bijzondere was de rode bles op zijn voorhoofd. Normaal vrij dof, glansde die vandaag in de ochtendzon als Gods eigen bloed. Nooit zal ik dat moment vergeten. Ik zeg het u, ik stond verstomd, als aan de grond genageld. Godsdienstig als ik ben, schoot mij direct te binnen: ‘Maar dat is Christus! Nu kan ik hem zelf eens vragen of hij waarlijk God is, gezien iedereen vandaag de dag zegt daaraan te twijfelen’. Helaas, die kans ontglipte mij. Het rood was snel gedoofd. Het diertje schrok en vluchtte naar de overzij.

Non-religious on the rise in the US

Recent data from the American Religious Identification Survey (ARIS) show that the number of agnostics and atheists is increasing in the United States. Although only 1.6 percent of the Americans label themselves atheist or agnostic, based on stated beliefs 12 percent of the population qualifies for that worldview option. Within the Christian field, evangelicalism shows considerable growth. Researchers speak of evangelicalism as “the normative form of non-Catholic Christianity in the United States”.

natural selection

In an ancient Christian way Andries Knevel renounced his former creationist thinking (”ec forsacho allum dioboles uuercum and uuordum”) and asked forgiveness for his ideological errors.

There’s obviously a lot going on after Knevel’s confession, but what it, first of all, points out to me is that some conservative Christian opinion leaders have finally and completely surrendered to “inner religion”, in which everything is relative to the personal relationship with God. Paradoxically, it is a ‘conversion’ which is very religious and very secular at the same time. In this sense, what Knevel has done poses a real threat to his creationist adversaries, nl. the subjectivist compartmentalization of religion and science - which the creationists spit out as ‘compromise’.
