Feminist Intersection: The Niqab Ban IS a Feminist Issue | Bitch Magazine

To me this is an obvious feminist issue through and through, and it goes way beyond a human rights injustice. I’m checking myself as an ally to Muslim women, and supporting their right to bodily autonomy and self-determination.

However I’ll tell you this much – the amount of mainstream feminist response I’ve read regarding the lack of inclusion of contraception and abortion in maternal child health from Canada’s Conservative government in the G8 summit far exceeds the coverage I’ve seen regarding the niqab ban. In fact, I’ve barely seen any feminist press at all on the niqab ban. And I’m not surprised – reproductive rights gets lots of feminist attention, even if not mainstream media coverage. Intersecting race and culture? Not so much.

Is it because many of us don’t know about the niqab ban? Or are there lots of you out there who agree with it? What do you think?

threadbared: Couture Coincidence

We’re still mulling the implications of the Givenchy couture runway show at the recent Paris Fashion Week, with its perhaps lucky, maybe deliberate, coincidence with French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s condemnation of the burqa (a specific garment that in this instance seems to stand in for any face-obscuring garment with a Muslim-y connotation) as a “walking prison.”

The blogosphere certainly recognizes the coincidence, if not quite sure what to do with it. Going for the morbid commentary, Fashionologie calls them “couture corpse brides.” At the Lux Style File, they note that, “[Givenchy’s] creative director, Riccardo Tisci, definitely struck design genius and political controversy by showing two burqas in the famed houses’ [sic] line. Givenchy’s Modern Arabian Nights theme paired well with the landscape of current political events in France.” Meanwhile, the lone comment ups the ante by assigning value to the artistic efforts of the couture house (including, presumably this latest couture collection) while denying it to the sartorial practices of Muslim others. “The house of Givenchy is excellent. I agree with French President Nicholas Sarkozay to ban the burquas [sic].”

I suppose on some level I appreciate that fashion designers read the news. My initial reaction was definitely of intrigue, interest and I kind of thought it was cool. But on closer inspection, given couture houses’ historical objectification of “other” as fetish spectacle, it is hard to all of a sudden think of design houses as allies in the fight for Muslim women’s rights. This fails to move us from a fixed understanding of what a burqa means which has essentially become a fill in, catch all, category to describe Muslim women, to a more complex one that actually encompasses and acknowledges the work, experience and resistance of Muslim women who don the burka. Flattening the very complex experience of “Muslim women,” is a reductive tendency that seems to be at the heart of pro and con arguments of banning verse allowing what is understood universally and often falsely as “forced” veiling.

The Saudi clerical establishment is once more making noise that Islam is only for them; not for women, and eventually not for any other men. Their latest proposal is that women should be barred from taking part in one of the commandments of the faith, to make pilgrimage to Mecca. Although women can still go to the city, they are to be kept separate from the Ka’ba, the actual point of the pilgrimage. The argument is that women and men should not mix, and it is too crowded to keep them separate. Perhaps we should look at basic infrastructure, or alternate years between men and women. However, the real goal has never been to advance the religion.

Ik wil liever iets kwijt over de burka. In België schijnt er een burka-verbod in aantocht te zijn. Er komen twee dingen bij me op. Houd in de gaten dat ik geen burka-liefhebber ben. Maar ten eerste: de hypocrisie van het verbod. Je verandert met een kledingvoorschrift niets aan de onderdrukking of de zelf-onderdrukking van die vrouwen. In feite komt het erop neer, dat het burkaverbod ervoor zorgt dat jij er niet meer tegenaan hoeft te kijken, maar dat die vrouwen vervolgens de straat helemaal niet meer op gaan en fijn achter de muren van hun flatjes worden onderdrukt. Dat schiet, om de waarheid te zeggen, maar weinig op.

Imam Sheik Fawaz Jneid van de As-Soennah moskee in Den Haag voorziet een islamitische vluchtelingenstroom als gevolg van de discussie over hoofddoek, boerka en nikaab. Deze theatrale godsdienstmaniak met islamofascistische denkbeelden speelt reeds jaren een spel waarin anderen hem al voorgingen: je ensceneert een volk dat bedreigd wordt en er volgt een toenemende argwaan tegen degenen die niet tot dat bedreigde volk behoren, met agitatie en oproer als bekroning.

Met die burka is natuurlijk toch iets aan de hand. In menig Westeuropees land is een debat ontstaan over de vraag of vrouwen zich op een dergelijke manier mogen kleden of niet. Tot heldere uitkomsten heeft dat nog niet geleid, want neem nou Frankrijk: de regering en ook president Sarkozy zijn voorstander van een burkaverbod, maar voor zoiets ook wettelijk is vastgelegd… dat blijkt verre van eenvoudig te zijn.
Geloof maar niet dat het debat over dit hoofddeksel zomaar overdrijft, daarvoor is de symbolische waarde ervan veel te groot en er zal toch iets moeten zijn om de ongemakkelijke verhouding tussen Oost en West een ‘gezicht’ te geven. Tot nader orde is dat de burka en het kan bijna niet anders of dit onderwerp zal ook in Nederland een punt van heftige discussies worden.
Inmiddels heeft de burka België in haar ban en nu is ook Beieren aan de beurt.

Nikaab en Boerka in Belgie verboden | Artikel 7

Net als elders in Europa woedt in België al jaren een debat over het verbieden van boerka’s (die lichaam en gezicht volledig bedekken), nikaabs (die een spleet voor de ogen vrijlaten) en hoofddoekjes. Het Vlaamse openbare onderwijs kondigde onlangs een verbod op hoofddoekjes op zijn scholen af, maar dat werd door de Raad van State geschorst, omdat die wil dat eerst het Belgische Grondwettelijk Hof zich uitspreekt over de wettigheid van zo’n hoofddoekjesverbod. Het extreem-rechtse Vlaams Belang had de Belgische regering eerder gevraagd zelf met een boerkaverbod te komen, maar minister van Binnenlandse Zaken Annemarie Turtelboom antwoordde destijds dat de maatschappij hierover zo verdeeld is, dat stringente regelgeving nu niet op zijn plaats is. Het parlement van België beslist nu anders.

Fawaz verklaart ons de oorlog | Artikel 7

De boodschappen van de sheikh en van islamitische voormannen wordt door de heersende, vooral linkse, elite aan ons voorgehouden met het beroep om ons niet ‘lullig’ op te stellen tegenover de islam en om onze harten en hoofden open te stellen voor de moslimse medemens. Die oproep gaat als regel gepaard met manipulatie van onze schuldgevoelen. Het elfde gebod luidt immers: ‘Gij zult niet islamofoob zijn.’ Gezagsgetrouwe linkse conformisten en naïeve progressieve christenen laten zich met die boodschap graag op pad sturen.

Hier wreekt zich niet alleen het tekort aan zelfbewustzijn in de confrontatie met de islam, maar ook de volstrekte naïviteit over de intenties van de islam op langere termijn. De sheikh is daar duidelijk over: “Zij willen het Licht van Allah doven met hun monden, maar Allah wil slechts Zijn Licht volledig laten schijnen, ook al haten de ongelovigen het. Hij is Het Die Zijn Boodschapper heeft gezonden met de leiding en de ware godsdienst om deze te doen zegevieren over alle godsdiensten, ook al haten de afgodendienaren het” (Soerat at Tawbah 32-33).

Dat klinkt als een oorlogsverklaring. Het wordt tijd dat we die eindelijk eens serieus nemen. Hoofddoekjes, boerka en nikaab vormen een door de islam opgedrongen oorlogsfront. Het is het beste als we ons daardoor niet bij de neus laten nemen. De tegenaanval zou direct gericht moeten zijn op de islamitische intentie om de ware godsdienst te doen zegevieren over alle godsdiensten. Voor zo’n godsdienst kan er geen plaats zijn in de Nederlandse herberg.
