To ban or not to ban the burqa
The circumstances surrounding France’s veil debate are key, but so is the individual context for Muslim women

Can Sarkozy Justify Banning the Veil?
Circumstances are decisive. What might be unthinkable in the U.S. looks more reasonable in France.
Feminist Intersection: The Niqab Ban IS a Feminist Issue | Bitch Magazine
To me this is an obvious feminist issue through and through, and it goes way beyond a human rights injustice. I’m checking myself as an ally to Muslim women, and supporting their right to bodily autonomy and self-determination.
However I’ll tell you this much – the amount of mainstream feminist response I’ve read regarding the lack of inclusion of contraception and abortion in maternal child health from Canada’s Conservative government in the G8 summit far exceeds the coverage I’ve seen regarding the niqab ban. In fact, I’ve barely seen any feminist press at all on the niqab ban. And I’m not surprised – reproductive rights gets lots of feminist attention, even if not mainstream media coverage. Intersecting race and culture? Not so much.
Is it because many of us don’t know about the niqab ban? Or are there lots of you out there who agree with it? What do you think?
Quebec Niqab Ban: No/Non to Bill 94! | Racialicious – the intersection of race and pop culture
How many times does it have to be said that gender equity is about giving women the right to make their own choices? If a woman’s choice is to wear a niqab, BARRING her from wearing one by removing access to work, childcare, healthcare and education is the absolute opposite of gender equality.
Women Fight Back: Don’t Ban the Veil! – Page 1 – The Daily Beast
Sheema Khan considers wearing her headscarf a feminist act—and says her native Canada is belying its liberal values by supporting Quebec’s attempt to ban the veil.
Siddiqui: Picking on Muslim women smacks of hypocrisy – thestar.com
I do not like the niqab/burqa. It makes me uncomfortable. But that’s not a good enough reason to argue that it be banned or, worse, that those wearing it be denied public services, including education and even health care, as Quebec is proposing.
Quebec bill will rescue Muslim women
Quebec will refuse all government services, including education and non-emergency health care, to Muslim women wearing the niqab or burka. Premier Jean Charest said the bill is aimed at “drawing a line” to demonstrate that gender equality is a paramount Quebec value.
As a Muslim Canadian, I am thrilled at this development, and welcome the rescue of all Muslim-Canadian women who were being blackmailed, bullied and brainwashed into wearing attire that has no place in either Islam or the 21st century.
Non/No Bill 94 Coalition Statement « NO to Quebec Provincial Bill 94
Forcing a woman to reveal part of her body is no different from forcing her to be covered. Both the federal Conservative and Liberal parties have expressed support for Bill 94, which raises the very real possibility that similar legislation will be proposed across Canada. We demand that Bill 94 be withdrawn immediately, as it has no place in a democratic state that values autonomy, liberty and justice.
No Bill 94 Coalition is made up of concerned individuals, organizations and grassroots movements that are demanding that the proposed Quebec legislation, Bill 94, be withdrawn immediately.
We invite all individuals and groups of conscience inside and outside of Quebec to publicly or privately endorse this statement by emailing their name(s), location (city, state/province, and country), and contact information to nonbill94 [at] gmail [dot] com
threadbared: Couture Coincidence
We’re still mulling the implications of the Givenchy couture runway show at the recent Paris Fashion Week, with its perhaps lucky, maybe deliberate, coincidence with French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s condemnation of the burqa (a specific garment that in this instance seems to stand in for any face-obscuring garment with a Muslim-y connotation) as a “walking prison.”
The blogosphere certainly recognizes the coincidence, if not quite sure what to do with it. Going for the morbid commentary, Fashionologie calls them “couture corpse brides.” At the Lux Style File, they note that, “[Givenchy’s] creative director, Riccardo Tisci, definitely struck design genius and political controversy by showing two burqas in the famed houses’ [sic] line. Givenchy’s Modern Arabian Nights theme paired well with the landscape of current political events in France.” Meanwhile, the lone comment ups the ante by assigning value to the artistic efforts of the couture house (including, presumably this latest couture collection) while denying it to the sartorial practices of Muslim others. “The house of Givenchy is excellent. I agree with French President Nicholas Sarkozay to ban the burquas [sic].”

Anushay Hossain: For France Banning The Burqa Is Not The Answer
The issue of banning the burqa in France has generated so much heat over the past few months that one would assume the ban had already come into effect. Not so.
Designers in Paris Veil Models in Protest of Proposed Burka Ban. – Feministing
I suppose on some level I appreciate that fashion designers read the news. My initial reaction was definitely of intrigue, interest and I kind of thought it was cool. But on closer inspection, given couture houses’ historical objectification of “other” as fetish spectacle, it is hard to all of a sudden think of design houses as allies in the fight for Muslim women’s rights. This fails to move us from a fixed understanding of what a burqa means which has essentially become a fill in, catch all, category to describe Muslim women, to a more complex one that actually encompasses and acknowledges the work, experience and resistance of Muslim women who don the burka. Flattening the very complex experience of “Muslim women,” is a reductive tendency that seems to be at the heart of pro and con arguments of banning verse allowing what is understood universally and often falsely as “forced” veiling.
Secularism and Religion
Kenan Malik’s essay on secularism, religion and demography
The real problem with the Eurabia thesis is not so much the invalid demographic projections as the belief that demography is destiny. ‘Can Europe be the same with different people in it?’ Caldwell asks at the start of his book. The very question is misguided for it confuses the diversity of peoples and the diversity of values. People of North African or South Asian parentage, Caldwell seems to believe, will inevitably cleave to a different set of values than those of European ancestry. Why? Being born to European parents is not a passport to Enlightenment beliefs. So why should we imagine that having Bangladeshi or Moroccan ancestry makes one automatically believe in sharia?
FiveThirtyEight: Politics Done Right: Is an Anti-Islam Wave Hitting Europe?
The rise of Wilders has alarmed many political observers, and has been cited as yet another point of evidence of a new tide of European anti-Islamism. (Though Wilders specifically rejects comparisons to far-right politicians Jean-Marie Le Pen and Jörg Haider.) Bolstering this “trend” are Switzerland’s referendum against minarets, the French ban on headscarves in public buildings, and anti-immigration parties making headway in other countries. But is pure Islamophobia (e.g., the number of people who fear or dislike Islam) the driving factor in the PVV’s rise in support? And why are anti-Islam/anti-immigration parties such a force in the Netherlands, but not in countries like Spain? Is it simply a matter of integration of a new immigrant group, rather than cultural or political characteristics specific to Muslims?
Paul Berman’s outraged attack on Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s attackers. – By Ron Rosenbaum – Slate Magazine
The Flight of the Intellectuals, Paul Berman’s new 300-page polemic (to be published this spring), recalls these heady days in a book that is likely to provoke an intense controversy among public intellectuals. The most contentious assertion in Berman’s book is that some of the most prominent of these—people who rushed to the defense of Salman Rushdie when he was threatened with death for a novel deemed blasphemously irreverent to Islam—have failed to offer wholehearted support to Muslim dissidents today, people such as Ayaan Hirsi Ali, the Somali-born author and Muslim apostate, whose lives are similarly threatened. This failure, this “flight of the intellectuals,” Berman argues, represents a deeply troubling abandonment of Enlightenment values in the face of recurrent threats to freedom of expression.
The Hindu : Opinion / Lead : Islamism, modernity & Indian Mujahideen
Many believe the jihadist movement in India to be driven by religious fanaticism. There is little doubt that the idiom of the Indian Mujahideen drew on Islam, or at least a certain reading of Islam. The manifestos the organisation released after its operations sought religious legitimacy for the jihadist project.
The Case for the Sabbath, Even if You’re Not Religious – Culture – The Atlantic
But herein lies a theological stumper. Why—and how—would one keep the Sabbath if God has nothing to do with it? Without a well-formed rationale, efforts to have a day of rest would be invariably tepid and toothless. Nostalgia alone isn’t nearly robust enough to sustain a weekly retreat from modernity.
Women Judges Stir Up Old Debate in Egypt – NYTimes.com
When women tried to join the bench on Egypt’s top administrative court, the uproar from its judges was fierce. Women are too emotional, they insisted — and who will take care of the family if the mother is busy with the arduous tasks of the courtroom?
Saudi Arabia’s got talent – Times Online
Wearing the niqab, or veil, with only her eyes visible behind her full-length black gown, Hilal is the first woman to have reached the final — but it is the manner in which she got there that has captivated the judges and the public.
Three weeks ago, she stormed into the penultimate round with a blistering attack on extremist Muslim clerics. Her poem, The Chaos of Fatwas, denounced those who issue hardline religious decrees, comparing them to suicide bombers as “monsters wearing belts”. She attacked the segregation of the sexes maintained by preachers who “prey like a wolf” on those who seek progress and peace.
Saudis: No Girls Allowed in Mecca | RD Blog: The Devil’s Advocate | ReligionDispatches
The Saudi clerical establishment is once more making noise that Islam is only for them; not for women, and eventually not for any other men. Their latest proposal is that women should be barred from taking part in one of the commandments of the faith, to make pilgrimage to Mecca. Although women can still go to the city, they are to be kept separate from the Ka’ba, the actual point of the pilgrimage. The argument is that women and men should not mix, and it is too crowded to keep them separate. Perhaps we should look at basic infrastructure, or alternate years between men and women. However, the real goal has never been to advance the religion.

Ignoring the prohibition of nudity, Muslim artists—many of them women—are now defying religious tenets by painting naked models in pinup poses.

‘2010’: Hypocrieten versus hoofddoekjes

Burkaverbod in Beieren? – Welingelichte Kringen
