For more than over a decade we have witnessed the emergence of forms of cultural production in Europe that have been inspired by Islam. The turn towards Islamic entertainment and consumption in Muslim majority countries has been the focus of much research, but far less attention has been paid to these new forms of Islamic youth and popular culture in Europe. The research group ‘Living Islam’ at the University of Amsterdam has engaged in a NWO-funded research project about new Islamic cultural practices in Europe. Our main research focus has been on artistic performances, popular music, and new styles of dress.
On Thursday August 30, we some of the outcomes of this research in a Public Seminar on Muslim Cultural Production in Europe. In four brief presentations we address different aspects of Muslim cultural production. What do music, artistic performances and dress tell us about the presence of Islam and transformations in cultural production in Europe?
