[youtube:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d46Ik3Yviwo]In the following presentation, Dr. Markus Balkenhol discusses the cultural history of Zwarte Piet. Dr. Balkenhol is a postdoctoral fellow in Ethnology at the Meertens Institute of Dutch language and culture in Amsterdam and is also a postdoctoral fellow at Utrecht University. He received his PhD from the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. His dissertation, “’Tracing Slavery: An Ethnography of Diaspora, Affect and Cultural Heritage in Amsterdam,” explores the commemoration of slavery in the Netherlands with a focus on the relationships of public or collective expressions of colonial heritage and their visceral and intimate experience in the formation of political subjectivities in the Netherlands.
