ISIS is a collaboration of eight Dutch universities that all attach great importance to the study of Islam. Its main aim is to combine the social scientific approach to the study of Islam, which has been greatly stimulated over the last years, with the more classical humanities approach, so that they can enhance one another. On Friday April 16th, the Interuniversity Research School for Islam Studies (ISIS) organises its opening conference ‘Studying Islam: Text and Context’.
The Anthropology Day 2009 will address the complex relations between religion and conflict. In public debate, religion – especially Islam – is considered a prime source and trigger of contemporary conflict. Plenty of anthropological research shows that such ideas make a caricature of reality and lack context. Then what do we have to say about that complex connection? How can anthropologists contribute to this fascinating and important theme?
On 27 November Thijl Sunier will deliver his inaugural lecture for the chair of ‘Islam in European Societies’. Before this lecture a seminar on Islam in Europe is organised on the occasion.
Op 4 december 2009 organiseert de MOI haar jaarlijkse studiedag over het menselijk lichaam in relatie tot cultuur en religie. Tijdens de studiedag komen thema’s aan bod als kleding, lichaamsbeweging, besnijdenis en hymenreconstructie en islamitische biomedische ethiek en orgaandonatie. De studiedag is open voor iedereen die geïnteresseerd is in deze thema’s.
Het ‘Leiden University Centre for the Study of Islam and Society’ (LUCIS) is een samenwerkingsverband van Leidse wetenschappers uit verschillende faculteiten die zich vanuit verschillende vakgebieden bezighouden met islam en moslimsamenlevingen. De expertise van het LUCIS is gericht op het Midden-Oosten en Noord-Afrika, Zuidoost-Azië waaronder Indonesië, alsmede op Nederland en het Westen. Woendag 14 oktober 2009 is de openingsconferentie.
Roeland will defend his PhD thesis in which he investigates whether the subjectivisation-thesis is a fruitful theory to describe and explain current modes of evangelical and charismatic Christianity among Dutch Christian youngsters. Both the evangelical and charismatic movement have increased in popularity in recent years, especially among young people, and have become a visible, lively and attractive phenomenon in the Dutch religious scene. His main question addresses the extension of these modes of religiosity in terms of subjectivization among young people.
Op vrijdag 19 juni organiseert MSV Nijmegen een speciale gastlezing door Professor Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl van de UCLA uit de Verenigde Staten, met als onderwerp: ‘De paradoxen van de islamitische uitdaging en de toekomst van de wereld’ (‘The Paradoxes of the Islamic Challenge and the Future of the World’)
Annette Linden interviewde 36 rechts georiënteerde activisten langdurig en meerdere malen om te achterhalen wat mensen beweegt om actief te worden en te blijven bij een extreem-rechtse beweging. Op vrijdag 26 juni 2009 om 13.45 uur verdedigt Annette Linden haar proefschrift ‘Besmet. Levenslopen en motieven van extreem-rechtse activisten in Nederland’.
Marokkaans-Nederlandse organisaties vieren dit jaar dat 40 jaar geleden de wervingsakkoorden werden gesloten tussen Nederland en Marokko. De herdenking bestaat uit diverse activiteiten die van juni tot en met december 2009 in verschillende steden zullen gehouden worden.
Zou het in een democratische rechtsstaat mogelijk moeten zijn om aanslagen te verheerlijken? Hoe ver mag de Nederlandse overheid gaan in het opleggen van kledingvoorschriften ten aanzien van moslims? Zijn er gronden waarop men verbodsbepalingen ten aanzien van uitingsvormen van islam kan legitimeren? Dit zijn vragen die aan de orde zullen komen tijdens een symposium van de Onderzoekschool Maatschappelijke Veiligheid van de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam.
