Waar is de Hofstadgroep?

Het lijkt al weer een eeuwigheid geleden dat de kranten volstonden met de Hofstadgroep. Nederlands enige echte ‘terreurorganisatie’ van de laatste 10 jaar. De groep jongeren rondom Mohammed Bouyeri werd in de debatten exemplarisch voor alles wat er mis is met islam en moslims: agressief, onmogelijk (cultureel) te integreren, onbetrouwbaar en een stel idioten. De gretigheid waarmee men deze groep als terreurgroep wilde aanmerken kwam vooral tot uiting toen het gerechtshof tot het oordeel kwam dat ze geen terroristische organisatie waren. Nadat het OM in cassatie ging tegen die beslissing verwees de Hoge Raad de zaak terug naar het Gerechtshof. Dat gerechtshof heeft nu het oordeel geveld dat de groep wel een terroristische organisatie was. Een opmerkelijke en zeer belangrijke rechtzaak waar ik de nodige twijfels bij heb. Zoals ik ook de nodige twijfels heb bij het gebrek aan media aandacht hiervoor.

Muslims and multiculturalism in the Netherlands – A Case of Cultural Masochism?

A fascinating article of John Vinocur in the New York times about the ‘failing integration of its increasinly large and alienated Muslim communities’. According to the writer Europe is in denial about its problems with Muslims. Only when something happens people wake up. He refers to the Netherlands as an exemplary case. Whether the Dutch model of integration policies was multiculturalist or not the situation is certainly more complicated than the author of the New York Times article suggests.

Because I don’t exactly know anymore when I started my own website, both the years 2009 and 2010 have been labelled as celebrating 10 years of blogging. In the last two years I tried to re-direct this site into more like a public anthropology website. A process that started in 2009 with the post Public Anthropology – 10 years from Researchpages to Closer (1999/2000-2009/2010). In this post I review the last two years and give an update on the recent publications.

The politics of pleasure – The digital story of the nativity

There are several funny videos on Youtube depicting the story of the nativity by using Facebook and/or other social media updates. By foregrounding particular identities, hegemonies and politics while marginalizing others, the Internet reproduces geo-political but also racial, gender and sexual privileges while at the very same time for example Facebook’s rhetoric suggests that we can connect worldwide without any social boundaries giving it an empowering and liberating potential. The Internet is an ideologically laden network and the digital story of the nativity is a nice example of that.
