Nog een opiniestuk in NRC: Voor mij geen islam-lessen van Wesley van de Berg. Drs. Wesley van de Berg is socioloog en voorstander van een loyaliteitsverklaring ter verkrijging van het Nederland erschap.

Hij reageert op eerdere artikelen van Coskun en Bejja in NRC, maar het verhoudt zich ook aardig tot een eerder geplaatst artikel hier van Woltering.

Vergelijk voor de aardigheid ook een al ouder stuk van Ewald Vervaet (en mijn reacties en emailuitwisselingen daarop)

In zijn artikel ‘Hoe verdedig ik de islam? Les 1’ schrijft Deniz Coskun (Opiniepagina, 8 december) het ene, en in zijn artikel ‘Waarom deze moslim les 1 verwerpt’ (Opiniepagina, 9 december) schrijft Jamal Bejja weer het andere, het tegenovergestelde.

Het is typerend voor wat het `islamdebat ´ heet. De media worden zelfs met koranverzen bestookt, en niet-moslims doen lustig mee om hun islamvriendelijke of islamvijandige gelijk te halen – wat ze dus nooit krijgen: dé islam bestaat niet, is de slogan.

Het enige dat telt, is het antwoord op de vraag: kan de moslimgemeenschap in Nederland – en West-Europa op termijn de democratische rechtsstaat dragen?”

Immers, de moslimgemeenschap gaat een sterke machtsfactor vormen.

Nu is één op de twintig Nederlanders moslim, maar van de borelingen is één op de tien moslim: het aantal moslims neemt dus gestaag toe.

,,Hoofddoekje of heilige oorlog: je kunt met de islam alle kanten op. ‘Zuivere’ moslims bestaan niet. De Koran bevat geen heldere, ondubbelzinnige, universeel dwingende boodschap. Het zou goed zijn als zowel gelovigen als ongelovigen hun hang naar zuiverheid wat meer zouden relativeren, en bereid zouden zijn om de deuren van de ijtihad (de vrije interpretatie) verder open te zetten.”

Het wonderlijke is dat ook de vrijzinnige moslims zich beroepen op de onwrikbare waarheid van het Heilige Boek

Als er één ding duidelijk wordt uit deze soms hilarische theologische muggenzifterij, dan is het wel dat zoiets als de ‘zuivere’ islam niet bestaat, en dat je met de Koran (net als met de Bijbel) zo’n beetje alle kanten op kunt. Het is dan ook merkwaardig om te zien dat seculiere islamcritici zoals Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Hans Jansen of Paul Cliteur in spiegelbeeld dezelfde zuiverheidsobsessie koesteren, en degenen die het anders zien op hun beurt kapittelen omdat zij ‘naïef’ en ‘onwetend’ zijn omtrent de ware strekking van de Koran. Maar Hirsi Ali’s stelling dat er maar één islam bestaat, namelijk ‘die van de Koran en de hadith en de Profeet Mohammed’, stuit minstens op het bezwaar dat tal van rekkelijke moslims de overleveringen niet rekenen tot de zuivere islam, en de Profeet zelf als een historische en dus feilbare figuur beschouwen. Haar overtuiging dat alle moslims per definitie onderworpen zijn aan een absolute Allah en een absolute Mohammed blijft wringen met het vrijzinnige uitgangspunt dat het blindelings volgen van de traditie of van schriftgeleerden door de Koran juist wordt veroordeeld.
Terwijl vrijzinnige moslims stellen dat de Koran ‘overduidelijk’ de gelijkwaardigheid predikt tussen man en vrouw, bewijzen de radicale Verlichters met evenveel aplomb dat de islam een machistische en vrouwvijandige godsdienst is. Terwijl de eersten met de hand op de Koran beweren dat de islam in wezen vredelievend is, sluiten Hirsi Ali c.s. zich aan bij de radicaal-fundamentalistische overtuiging dat dezelfde Koran oproept om afvalligen en ongelovigen te doden. Als de ene partij ‘bewijst’ dat het begrip djihad staat voor ‘het zich inspannen op Gods weg’, ‘bewijzen’ zowel Mohammed B. als Ayaan Hirsi Ali dat dit begrip alleen maar kan slaan op de Heilige Oorlog. Als gematigde moslims de terreur- en zelfmoordaanslagen ‘onrein’ en ‘onislamitisch’ noemen, en zien als misbruik van het geloof door ‘fascistoïde fundamentalisten’, tonen de aanhangers van Bin Laden en de radicale Verlichters in commissie aan dat terreur en martelaarschap logisch voortvloeien uit de ‘zuivere’ islam.
Gezien deze fundamentele onenigheid zou het beter zijn om elk essentialisme (het idee dat je het wezenskenmerk, de zuivere kern, kunt bepalen) ten aanzien van de teksten, geschiedenis en tradities van de islam voortaan te vermijden. De islam is een veelkleurig tapijt dat men niet naar de ene of de andere kant moet oprollen. Het is net zo misleidend om de islam te beschouwen als ‘in de kern’ gewelddadig, totalitair en terroristisch, als om hem ‘in wezen’ zacht en vredelievend te noemen. Oorlog en vrede zijn veeleer de uiterste polen die een uitgebreid continuüm naar twee kanten afbakenen: ‘de’ islam is niets anders dan dit continuüm. In dit licht heeft het even weinig zin om islam en terreur aan elkaar gelijk te stellen, als om te blijven weigeren om tussen beide enigerlei verband te zien. Ook vredelievende moslims zullen moeten erkennen dat de oorlogstraditie is ingebakken in de geschiedenis van de islam, en dat terroristen zich niet voor niets op het geloof beroepen. Andersom moet men zich blijven verzetten tegen het vooroordeel van zowel islamisten als Verlichters dat softe liberale moslims geen ‘echte’ moslims zouden zijn. Hoofddoekje of heilige oorlog: je kunt met de islam alle kanten op. ‘Zuivere’ moslims bestaan niet. De Koran bevat geen heldere, ondubbelzinnige, universeel dwingende boodschap. Het zou goed zijn als zowel gelovigen als ongelovigen hun hang naar zuiverheid wat meer zouden relativeren en bereid zouden zijn om de deuren van de ijtihad (de vrije interpretatie) verder open te zetten.

Dutch debate on Islam replays centuries-old argument

Michel Hoebink of Radio Netherlands about the Dutch islamdebate:

The recent commemoration of last year’s murder of the filmmaker and writer Theo van Gogh, has led to a revival of interest in the ongoing Dutch Islam debate. Newspaper columnist Paul Scheffer argued in the NRC Handelsblad that Islam – in order to reconcile itself with a modern democratic order – needs to rethink some of its basic tenets about freedom of religion.

Last week, the authoritative paper published two very interesting reactions to Mr Scheffer’s plea for Islamic reform: one by Somali-born liberal conservative MP Ayaan Hirsi Ali and another by Islam researcher Robbert Woltering.

Unfavourable to women?
According to Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Scheffer’s belief in the possibility of reforming Islam is naive. Ms Hirsi Ali backs her argument with her widely-publicised conviction that the ‘true doctrine of pure Islam’ – as it can be read in the Koran and the Traditions of the Prophet Mohammed – calls believers to commit violence against unbelievers and is unfavourable to the rights of women.

What Paul Scheffer holds for enlightened liberal Muslims, says Ms Hirsi Ali in her commentary, are in fact not Muslims who have left this pure Islam behind them but who have not yet confronted it. They are non-practising Muslims who sooner or later will reveal their ‘true ’nature’ and turn into practising ones.

Correct interpretation
The MP’s argument provoked an ironic commentary by Robbert Woltering, Islam researcher at the Leiden Institute for the Study of Islam in the Modern World (ISIM). Ever since the coming of Islam, Mr Woltering argues, Muslims have been quarrelling about the question as to what is the correct interpretation of Koran and the Prophetic Traditions.

Now, at a time that the answer seems further away than ever, the historical quest has come to an unexpected apotheosis, he writes, in – of all possible places – the Dutch parliament, where Ms Hirsi Ali recently revealed that she herself has discovered the True Doctrine of Pure Islam! Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s discovery, says Mr Woltering, will most probably please Mohammed Bouyeri, the fundamentalist who murdered Theo van Gogh. But it will be a disappointment for all those Muslims who mistakenly thought that Islam respects the rights of women and tells them to live in peace with their non-Muslim neighbours.

Replaying the debates
Woltering’s last remark is significant because it alludes to the fact that the debate between Dutch critics and defenders of Islam is, in many ways, some sort of replay of the ongoing debates between fundamentalists and reformers within the Islamic world. Ayaan Hirsi Ali may be a declared critic of fundamentalist Islam, but in fact she is in full agreement with her opponents about the true nature of Islamic religion. On the other hand, Robbert Wolterings implicit plea, that Islam cannot be reduced to a single literalist essence but can be interpreted in many different ways, is in many respects similar to the views of Muslim modernists.

Differences run deep
The contemporary debate within Islam is not just a debate between those who favour a conservative and those who favour a modern interpretation. The difference goes deeper than that. It is a debate between literalist fundamentalists and modernist reformers about the very legitimacy of interpretation itself. This debate is also as old as Islam; it finds a clear expression, for instance, in the debate between the rationalist Mu’tazilites and literalist Hanbalites in the 9th century. Fundamentalists believe that the text of the Koran should be literally applied in all times and places, without asking for any rational reason, simply because God tells us to do so. Modernists believe that Islam can be interpreted and re-interpreted in many different ways, in order to meet the demands of different places and ages.

IslamOnline.net has ‘The Month of Ramadan’ section with several articles about Dutch Muslims.

Dutch Muslims Launch Ramadan Web Site

The Ramadan site features information about the dawn-to-dusk fasting, reports on buzzing activities by mosques and Islamic organizations during the month as well as a review of Islam in the Dutch press.

The aim of the Web site, according to its founders, is to “familiarize non-Muslims in The Netherlands with this holy month that carries a special significance.”

The founders, according to information posted in their Web site, were motivated by the fact that most non-Muslims in the European country know so little about the fasting month and have, therefore, some misconceptions about Ramadan and Islam in general.

Another main goal of the Web site is to “post the members of the [Muslim] community on the religious activities supervised by Islamic organizations in the main Dutch cities.”

The site founders, all Dutch citizens mostly hailing from Turkey and north African countries, said all information available on their Web site is free of charge.

The Web site is endorsed by a number of well-known Dutch sites including www.lokum.nl, which reports on the affairs of the Turkish community, www.islam.pagina.nl, which features information about Islam, and www.maghreb.nl, focusing on the news of citizens from north African countries.

Dutch Muslims Seek Consensus on Ramadan Start

To spare the Muslim minority the usual disagreement on the beginning of the holy fasting month of Ramadan, five Dutch Muslim organizations agreed to start the fasting on Wednesday, October 5, according to astrological calculations.

In a statement issued Wednesday, September 21, the Imams Society, Moroccan Mosques Union in Central Netherlands, Moroccan Mosques Union in Amsterdam, Islamic Council in Lunenburg and the Federation of Islamic Organizations in the Netherlands said the new moon would not be sighted on Monday, October 3, and consequently the first day of Ramadan would be Wednesday.

Not a very big success, because Ramadan has begun today, October 4. But that doesn’t really matter. Several sites (e.g. Ramadanfestival) are booming sites nowadays.

With the start of the holy fasting month of Ramadan in the Netherlands, Muslim Web sites are attracting a large number of Muslims curious to know how to make their fast flawless and non-Muslims as well who want to learn more about the Muslim faith.

Is my fast valid if I do not pray? Is it a must to fast if I am sick? Do sex and smoking invalidate fast? are some of a plethora of questions that pour into Muslim Web sites’ Ask the Scholar or Fatwa sections.

“We are reaching out to Muslims interested in learning more about their religion especially during Ramadan,” Sheikh Galal Amer, the managing director of the Web site of the Imams Assembly in the Netherlands, told

He said the Web site also serves as a teaching tool for the third generation as they find information both in their native Dutch and Arabic, the language of the Noble Qur’an.

“The Web site also provides Dutch Muslims with a much-needed directory of mosques in the Netherlands and a list of their activities during the holy month,” Amer added.

There are one million Muslims in the Netherlands, mostly hailing from Turkish and Moroccan origin.

Most Visited

Ramadan Festival is considered to be the most visited Muslim Web site in the Netherlands.

The Dutch-Arabic Web site is supervised by a number of Muslim organizations in cooperation with Amsterdam municipality.

The founders, according to information posted on their Web site, were motivated by the fact that most non-Muslims in the European country knew little about Ramadan and Islam in general.

The Web site receives a torrent of questions almost on a daily basis from non-Muslims like can Muslims drink and smoke during fasting hours? Can Muslims fast some of the specific time?

It further undertook a poll that showed that 78 percent of Muslims in the Netherlands observe Ramadan while 22 percent do not fast.

Mosques and Islamic centers across the country have also set up a special Ramadan page on their Web sites and launched a series of live dialogues that host prominent scholars to answer questions on the dawn-to-dusk fasting month.

The country’s Muslim channel NMO will also air the Tarawih Prayer prayers daily and cover Muslim activities and forums after iftar (a meal that breaks the fast).

I don’t know if the Ramadanfestival is the most visited one, could be, but it is certainly worthwile to take a look.

De institutionele machtenscheiding tussen wetenschap en staat is dus niet hetzelfde als de filosofische scheiding tussen wetenschap
en politiek, of for that matter die tussen rede en geloof. Ook hier moeten de harde onderscheidingen door zachtere worden vervangen. De modernistische opvatting van wetenschap, die zich zo sterk tegen
zowel religie als politiek heeft afgezet, onttrekt gemakkelijk allerlei onderhuidse continu�teiten aan het zicht. Een meer postmoderne en reflexieve benadering van de kennisvorming staat in elk geval sceptischer tegenover de universalistische claims van waarheid, ethische neutraliteit en objectieve feitelijkheid die het
wetenschappelijk rationalisme zo dierbaar zijn (en komt daarmee in zeker opzicht tegemoet aan de islamitische kritiek). De westerse
wetenschap blijkt politieker van inslag te zijn en meer geloofselementen in zich te dragen dan door modernisten en Verlichters doorgaans wordt erkend (11). Wie hierin een heilloos
relativisme ziet, dient te bedenken dat deze sceptische benadering van de wetenschappelijke waarheid nog veel scherper gekant is tegen de absolute openbaringswaarheden van de politieke islam. Voor radicalen die m�t Azzam de inkt van de geleerde laten ineenvloeien met het bloed van de martelaar, is deze vorm van veelgoderij zonder meer een influistering van de Duivel.
