Revisiting Islam & Europe – Potential Histories and New Futures
During the Radboud Summerschool, I have the honour and pleasure to be able to teach a course on Islam & Europe. The relation between Islam & Europe animates many political and academic debates. This course will take you on a journey through the Islamo-European landscape. You will be enabled to engage with and to challenge three main narratives of Islam & Europe and to think critically about the relation between race, religion and secularism.
Topics that will be addressed are, potentially, :
- Potential Histories of Islam and Europe: what are the standard narratives about Islam and Europe in academia and public debate and how can we look at it in different ways?
- Chronotopes of Islam and Europe: what conceptualizations of time and place are operative in relation to Islam and Europe
- Out of time, out of place and out of bounds: Islam and Europe in integration and counter-radicalization policies
- The Edges of Islam and Europe: how do the historiographies of Islam and Europe look like when we take a look outside the European metropole (Antilles, South Africa and Syria)
- Writing Past, Present and Future: how can we make sense of alternative stories?
This summerschool course is diving into the potential histories of Islam and Europe.
