In Fuglerud’s ‘Constructing Exclusion’ (2004) he examines the ‘Micro-sociology of an immigration department’ and how on the level of bureaucracy people become capable and willing to
‘appropriate political decisions’ and secondly their ‘readiness to use legal and administrative measures to avoid social and moral issues being made the subject of political deliberations’(2009: 25).
Fuglerud argues that when doing research on national identity it is worth looking at the level of bureaucracy (something that is undermined by anthropologists), since this is the place where the political discourse is being put in practice.
