New Book – Identity and Participation in Culturally Diverse Societies: A Multidisciplinary Perspective

Together with Roel Meijer I wrote a chapter Going All the Way: Politicization and Radicalization of the Hofstad Network in the Netherlands. In this chapter we analyze the shift from a politicized identity to a radicalized identity of (members of) the Hofstad network. This chapter will be published in Identity and Participation in Culturally Diverse Societies: A Multidisciplinary Perspective edited by Assaad E. Azzi, Xenia Chryssochoou, Bert Klandermans, Bernd Simon. The book presents an original discussion of how the links between identity, political participation, radicalization, and integration can provide a scientific understanding of the complex issue of coexistence between groups in culturally diverse societies.

Eén van de belangrijkste kenmerken van de nasleep van 9/11 is het gegeven dat veel moslims het gevoel hebben zich voortdurend te moeten verantwoorden over zaken waar ze part noch deel aan hebben (zie het programma ZOZ van de VPRO). Hoewel een groot deel van de aanslagplegers van 9/11 voorafgaand aan hun religieuze radicalisering al in politieke zin geradicaliseerd waren en beide vormen van radicalisering zich bij hen vooral in Europa voltrok, staat toch hun religieuze achtergrond centraal in veel discussies. In deze bijdrage waarom er geen causale relatie ligt tussen islam en geweld, maar waarom religie en geweld wel onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden zijn.

Commotie over de komst van een FIOE congres in mei vanwege vermeende banden met de moslimbroederschap en islamgeleerde Yusuf Qaradawi. Die laatste wordt voortdurend in verband gebracht met zijn goedkeuring van zelfmoordaanslagen. Waar komt die commotie over zelfmoordaanslagen eigenlijk vandaan en wat is precies het standpunt van Qaradawi en hoe valt dat te plaatsen in discussies over zelfmoordaanslagen en jihad?

Mohammed Chentouf is nadat hij zijn straf wegen terrorisme gerelateerde activiteiten heeft uitgezeten, uitgezet naar Marokko alwaar hij spoorloos is verdwenen. En hij is niet de enige De zaak van Mohammed Chentouf e.a. doet vrezen dat de steun voor de rechtsstaat helemaal niet zo principieel is. De rechtsstaat is dan niet bedoeld om de vrijheid van de individuele burger ten opzichte van de staat te waarborgen, maar om de burger onder controle te houden. Een omkering van de situatie waar niemand erg blij mee zou moeten zijn.

The Dutch General Intelligence and Security Agency (AIVD) announced today that the threat of local jihadist networks against the Netherlands has decreased. Why young people radicalize

Two researches on radicalization show that when particular aspects of people’s life are perceived as unjust this is likely to result in muslim radicalism and rightwing extremism. Together with sensitivity for personal uncertainty and group threats this can easily lead to externally oriented negative emotions (such as anger) and intentions to engage in radical and even violent behavior. Socio-economic disadvantage and political factors, along with historical grievances, play a part in the development of radicalized collective action.
