An anthropology of Muslims in Europe - A modest attempt by Martijn
This is part two of the radicalization series. In the first I gave a brief overview of different practices regarding counterradicalization, triggering (I think) the main question for part two: what the hell is radicalization. I will try to answer that question and also make a plea for critical radicalization studies (as inspired by critical terrorism studies).
Tolerance is perhaps one of the main mythical characteristics of Dutch society. Mythical in the sense that it is a sacred narrative concerning how the Netherlands and the Dutch people came to have their present form. It can be traced back to the Dutch golden era, the 17th century and is still an important issue in debates and the relationship between different people. The discourse on tolerance however is blinding us for structural differences and forms of exclusion, in particular in a time when the idea of tolerance is transformed, from something that a dominant group is able to give to a minority group, to something the dominant group demands from the minority group.
The report, Ethnic Profiling in the European Union: Pervasive, Ineffective, and Discriminatory, details widespread profiling in France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, and other EU member states. Much of the counterradicalization policies has been based on the idea of a slippery slope but in practice it is ethnic profiling that resembles slippery slope and is often more of a public relations stunt than a real response to crime and radicalization. I will discuss the report briefly here and give extensive quotes based upon the Dutch situation. This is part one of a series of entries on the issue of radicalization.
Abu Mohammed al-Maqdisi is een Jordaans-Palestijnse islam-geleerde. Hij is één van de meest invloedrijke jihad-theoretici en ideologen van de mondiale jihad. Zeer recent heeft hij een nieuw boek gepubliceerd: Man Kana Baytahu min Zujaj fa-la Yarmi ghayrahu bi-Hajar – Qira’a wa-Ta’ammul fi Asfar al-‘Ahd al-Qadim wa-Muqarana bayna Akhbariha wa-bayna l-Qisas al-Qur’an al-‘Azim (Wie een huis van glas heeft moet een ander niet met stenen bekogelen – Een lezing en beschouwing over de boeken van het Oude Testament en een vergelijking tussen zijn boodschap en de verhalen van de geweldige koran). Het mag een opvallend boek genoemd worden dat is opgedragen aan onder meer Geert Wilders en Theo van Gogh.
Behalve het nodige inkomende verkeer van een porno site kwam mijn stuk over seksualisering en pornoficatie ook onder de aandacht van veel Geenstijl lezers door een email van mij aan de redactie van GS. Aangezien ik mijn lezers en reaguurders een stuk serieuzer neem dan GS, heb ik beloofd in te gaan op de reacties door enkele vragen te beantwoorden. Gaat u er even goed voor zitten, want het is een lang stuk (met veel citaten).
De overheid kan mensen zonder enige strafrechtelijke verdenking tot terroristen bestempelen, hun financiële zaken aan banden leggen en hun gegevens openbaar maken. Dit is een kant van de terreurbestrijding die we vaak niet zien, maar wel grote gevolgen kan hebben.
Volgens de politie is het signalement van de overvallers ‘Marokkaans’ of ‘Turks’, maar Spitsnieuws kiest voor ‘Marokkaans’ met een prachtige foto erbij. Best knap…voor een overval die nooit heeft plaatsgevonden.
