I had the honour of writing a chapter for a new volume Muslim Diaspora in the West edited by Haideh Moghissi and Halleh Ghorashi. In my chapter Understanding Dutch Islam – Exploring the Relationship of Muslims with the State and the Public Sphere in the Netherlands, I explore the culturalization of citizenship with the shifting modes of governance of minorities and the secular and the religious in the Netherlands during the last 30 years. The volume brings together work from experts within Europe and North America to explore the processes that shape the experiences and challenges faced by migrants and refugees who originate in countries of Islamic cultures. It addresses the realities of diasporic life for self-identified Muslims, addressing questions of integration, rights and equality before the law, and challenging stereotypical views of Muslims.
Het kabinet stuurde deze week een rapport naar de Tweede Kamer over de Gülenbeweging, die de afgelopen weken weer in de publieke aandacht was geweest met alarmerende krantenberichten. De Gülenbeweging is de snelst groeiende Turks-islamitische beweging en is tegenwoordig in een honderdtal landen actief. Het rapport, werd donderdag behandeld in een spoeddebat met minister Donner, dat was aangevraagd door het SP-Kamerlid Sadet Karabulut. Eerdere Kamervragen van Karabulut waren de aanleiding geweest tot een onderzoeksopdracht aan de auteur van het rapport, Martin van Bruinessen, die hier een samenvatting van het rapport geeft en een impressie van het kamerdebat.
Zappers, relishoppers, legobouwers. Jongeren in Nederland; je ziet ze nauwelijks nog in de kerk of de moskee. Toch zijn ze wel degelijk bezig met zingeving en religieuze activiteiten. Ze bewegen zich in diffuse sociale netwerken en zijn moeilijk te traceren, laat staan langdurig te binden. Hoe stellen deze jongeren hun eigen bouwpakket van zingeving samen en waaruit kiezen ze? Uit de tradities van de grote wereldreligies? En waaruit nog meer? Welk effect heeft de religieuze erfenis van ouders op jongeren? Welke bronnen boren moslimjongeren aan voor hun religieuze zingeving? Wat voor adviezen kunnen jongerenwerkers geven aan religieuze instituten? Het Handboek jongeren en religie toont de stand van zaken met betrekking tot onderzoek naar christelijke en moslimjongeren en laat zien welke rol voor godsdienstige instituten als de kerk en de moskee kan zijn weggelegd.
How do Muslims in Europe acquire discursive and practical knowledge of Islam? How are conceptions of Islamic beliefs, values and practices transmitted and how do they change? Who are the authorities on these issues that Muslims listen to? How do new Muslim discourses emerge in response to the European context?
This book addresses the broader question of how Islamic knowledge (defined as what Muslims hold to be correct Islamic beliefs and practices) is being produced and reproduced in West European contexts.
Het rapport Salafisme in Nederland. Aard, omvang en dreiging, het resultaat van tien maanden veldwerk binnen de salafistische gemeenschap en 1103 interviews met een representatieve groep van Nederlandse moslims (in samenwerking met het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek), moet de kennisleemte over deze groep in Nederland vullen. A new report by the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life, “Muslim Networks and Movements in Western Europe,” profiles several of the oldest, largest and most influential Muslim groups operating in Western Europe today. The report focuses on transnational networks and movements whose origins lie in the Muslim world but that now have an established presence in Western Europe, and examines how such movements seek to influence the views and daily lives of Muslims living there.
In recent years, there has been a proliferation of interest in youth issues and Muslim youth in particular. Young Muslims have been thrust into the global spotlight in relation to questions about security and extremism, work and migration, and rights and citizenship. This book interrogates the cultures and politics of Muslim youth in the global South and North to understand their trajectories, conditions, and choices.

Kan een moskee een partner zijn voor het voortgezet onderwijs? Dit onderwerp komt aan bod in een special van het Tijdschrift Pedagogiek. Dit themanummer is gebaseerd op de jarenlange praktijk in Gouda waar moskee An Nour een project verzorgde voor schoolloopbaanbegeleiding voor Marokkaans-Nederlandse en (later ook) autochtone Nederlandse jongens en meisjes. In dit nummer aandacht voor de debatten en conflicten door voortkwamen uit de samenwerking van deze moskee met jeugdhulpverleningsinstelling RCJ/Het Woonhuis en Goudse scholen. Vanuit antropologische, rechtsfilosofische, ethiek en godsdienstfilosofie invalshoeken wordt gereflecteerd over deze specifieke pedagogische casus.
