A weekly round up of writings on the Internet, some relevant for my research, some political, some funny but all of them interesting (Dutch/English). Nourdeen Wildeman, van moskeewijzer.nl, is tegenwoordig ook gastarbeider bij Wijblijvenhier.nl. Hij heeft enige weken terug een stuk geschreven: Manipulatieve media naar aanleiding van een bericht over opgehangen Iraniërs waarin een foto van Cheppih en de Poldermoskee te zien is. Dit is een soort vervolg op zijn bericht. Het gebrek aan professionaliteit bij Spitsnieuws online opent natuurlijk de deur voor allerlei vertekende, stigmatiserende of zelfs ronduit racistische of seksistische berichten; de beperkte coverage van vrouwen op Spitsnieuws online is een (ander) voorbeeld daarvan. Niet dat het de redactie heel veel kan schelen en je telefoontjes doorsturen naar derden is daar ook al geen probleem.
Op vrijdag 19 juni organiseert MSV Nijmegen een speciale gastlezing door Professor Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl van de UCLA uit de Verenigde Staten, met als onderwerp: ‘De paradoxen van de islamitische uitdaging en de toekomst van de wereld’ (‘The Paradoxes of the Islamic Challenge and the Future of the World’)
Annette Linden interviewde 36 rechts georiënteerde activisten langdurig en meerdere malen om te achterhalen wat mensen beweegt om actief te worden en te blijven bij een extreem-rechtse beweging. Op vrijdag 26 juni 2009 om 13.45 uur verdedigt Annette Linden haar proefschrift ‘Besmet. Levenslopen en motieven van extreem-rechtse activisten in Nederland’.

According to Dutch politician Geert Wilders it is 4 minutes to twelve when it comes to the ‘threat of islamization’ in Europe. Geert Wilders spoke at a conference organized by the Danish Free Speech Society (agenda) which was held in the Danish Parliament. As usual a controversial speech in which he does not really care about the facts and calls for sending away Muslims who are engaged in transgressive acts or thoughts.
Usually I do not pay too much attention here to textbooks on Islam. The simple reason is that there are too many and I do not have the time to review them. This is an exception, although it is not a thorough review but instead meant as a way to call your attention to a new textbook, Introducing Islam, written by William Shepard. The textbook is accompanied by a fantastic (although under construction) website with resources such as additional material, powerpoint slides, model course description and test questions.
The Mosque in Morgantown has several interesting articles on the topic Feminism and Islam which includes women led prayer, interpreting the Quran, women’s rights, pluralism, social change, female authority, and so on.
Er is al veel gezegd en geschreven over de interviews van politici op de website van de As-Soennah moskee Al-Yaqeen. Het interview dat het meeste stof heeft doen opwaaien is toch wel van CDA politica Rena Netjes. Het is een nogal onhandig en soms ‘een beetje dom’ interview in een tijd waarin de islamneurose zo groot is dat iemand die het op zou nemen voor moslims schijnbaar door de mangel gehaald moet worden. ***UPDATED!***

The report, Ethnic Profiling in the European Union: Pervasive, Ineffective, and Discriminatory, details widespread profiling in France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, and other EU member states. Much of the counterradicalization policies has been based on the idea of a slippery slope but in practice it is ethnic profiling that resembles slippery slope and is often more of a public relations stunt than a real response to crime and radicalization. I will discuss the report briefly here and give extensive quotes based upon the Dutch situation. This is part one of a series of entries on the issue of radicalization.
