In 1996, during the Algerian Civil War, seven monks of the Tibhrine monastery in Algeria (belonging to the Roman Catholic Trappist Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance) were kidnapped. The film of Gods and Men is based on that event and follows the lives of French Catholic monks in the Atlas Mountains of Algeria in the 1990s. As the country is caught into a terrible civil war between an oppressive secularist state and radical Islamists, the Trappist monks face the question of how to ‘love thy neighbour’ even when he points a gun at you.

Ritual slaughter in the Netherlands – From animal to ethical meat

The Dutch banned ritual slaughtering by Muslims and Jews. In a proposal heavily condemned by Muslim and Jewish organizations the Party of the Animals wanted a complete ban on dhabiha and shechita in cases where the animals were not stunned before the killing; the ritual slaughtering by Muslims and Jews. The ban will mostly effect orthodox Jews since all of the shechita slaughtering involves animals fully conscious while in the case of dhabiba this is the case in only 25%-40%. Or how ‘food’ has become field where people battle over political, religious, economic, social and animal welfare issues.

Volgens Amerikaanse onderzoekers Abrams, Wiener en Yaple zal georganiseerde religie uiteindelijk verdwijnen in negen Westerse democratieën: Oostenrijk, Tjechië, Finland, Zwitserland, Ierland, Canada, Australië, Nieuw-Zeeland en…Nederland. Met name in die laatste vijf ‘religion will be driven toward extinction’ zo stellen zij. Maar is dat ook het einde van geloof?

José Casanova – God in a Cold Climate. Religion in the Secular Public Sphere: Challenges and Responses

José Casanova will deliver a lecture at Radboud University Nijmegen on 10 March 2011 on the topic of religion in a secular public sphere. Within Western societies, some of which are secular through-and-through, the activities or religious movements that claim a prominent role in society cause a climate of conflicts and tensions. But the success of these religious movements proves that modernity and religion are far from mutually exclusive phenomena and that modern secularized society must find a way of integrating them in its fabric.

Handboek en symposium over jongeren en religie

Zappers, relishoppers, legobouwers. Jongeren in Nederland; je ziet ze nauwelijks nog in de kerk of de moskee. Toch zijn ze wel degelijk bezig met zingeving en religieuze activiteiten. Ze bewegen zich in diffuse sociale netwerken en zijn moeilijk te traceren, laat staan langdurig te binden. Hoe stellen deze jongeren hun eigen bouwpakket van zingeving samen en waaruit kiezen ze? Uit de tradities van de grote wereldreligies? En waaruit nog meer? Welk effect heeft de religieuze erfenis van ouders op jongeren? Welke bronnen boren moslimjongeren aan voor hun religieuze zingeving? Wat voor adviezen kunnen jongerenwerkers geven aan religieuze instituten? Het Handboek jongeren en religie toont de stand van zaken met betrekking tot onderzoek naar christelijke en moslimjongeren en laat zien welke rol voor godsdienstige instituten als de kerk en de moskee kan zijn weggelegd.

From Salvation to Selfation? Subjectivisation among Dutch Christian youngsters

Roeland will defend his PhD thesis in which he investigates whether the subjectivisation-thesis is a fruitful theory to describe and explain current modes of evangelical and charismatic Christianity among Dutch Christian youngsters. Both the evangelical and charismatic movement have increased in popularity in recent years, especially among young people, and have become a visible, lively and attractive phenomenon in the Dutch religious scene. His main question addresses the extension of these modes of religiosity in terms of subjectivization among young people.

Eigenheid of Eigenzinnigheid in Ede

Eigenheid of eigenzinnigheid. Analyse van cultuur- en geloofsgerelateerde denkbeelden en gedragsuitingen in de gemeente Ede. Het eerste deel van de studie richt zich enerzijds op de gelovigen binnen de Marokkaanse gemeenschap: de moskeebezoekers en de opkomst van een fundamentalistische stijl van geloofsbeleving. Anderzijds gaat het onderzoek specifiek in op wijk Veldhuizen, in het bijzonder op de Marokkaanse jongeren die er sinds lang (en het afgelopen jaar vanwege de media-aandacht zeer zichtbaar) openbare orde problemen veroorzaken. De vraag is in hoeverre er sprake is van radicalisering en polarisatie. Het tweede deel beschrijft de (in de ogen van buitenstaanders) relatief gesloten plattelandsgemeenschappen binnen de gemeente Ede. De vraag die centraal staat is welke opvattingen, attituden en machanismen (op gemeenschapsniveau) die ‘gesloten gemeenschappen’ kenmerken en kunnen verduidelijken waarom en hoe groepen mensen zich tegen elkaar afzetten.

CBS – Religie aan het begin van de 21ste eeuw

Ruim de helft van de Nederlandse volwassenen rekent zich tot een kerkelijke gezindte of een levensbeschouwelijke groepering. Eén op de vijf gaat regelmatig naar een religieuze bijeenkomst. Dat is fors minder dan voorheen, aldus een recent CBS – onderzoek. Interessant, hoewel de conclusies over ontkerkelijk en privatisering wellicht wat overtrokken zijn.
