Het pluriforme ongenoegen

In haar onderzoek Het Multicultureel Onbehagen richt Eva Klooster zich vooral op de alledaagse gevoelens van onbehagen over pluriform Nederland. Ik heb geprobeerd haar waardevolle onderzoek in een wat bredere context te plaatsen door een vijftal op elkaar ingrijpende ontwikkelingen te bespreken: de alledaagse opvatting over cultuur, de houding ten opzichte van islam in een seculiere samenleving, authenticiteit, radicalisering van secularisme en islam en het extremisme van het midden.

Attributing Wilders’ victory to a rise of Dutch intolerance (although that may be the case) means neglecting a trend that has been going on for more than a decade now and the variety in people’s motives for voting for him. It also neglects the fact that other parties have been subjected to the same trend as well. This is a trend in which people increasingly perceive conflict according to a logic of ‘culture talk’.

the case of Palestine seems to become more and more central to the global justice movement. Much of the attention of the public goes out to the violent resistance of Hamas and other insurgent groups and we do not hear much about non-violent resistance. The current Flotilla case is an exception. Anne de Jong, a Dutch anthropologist studying Palestinian/Israelian nonviolent resistance was part of the Flotilla together with a Palestinian-Dutch activist.
