New Book – Muslim Diaspora in the West

I had the honour of writing a chapter for a new volume Muslim Diaspora in the West edited by Haideh Moghissi and Halleh Ghorashi. In my chapter Understanding Dutch Islam – Exploring the Relationship of Muslims with the State and the Public Sphere in the Netherlands, I explore the culturalization of citizenship with the shifting modes of governance of minorities and the secular and the religious in the Netherlands during the last 30 years. The volume brings together work from experts within Europe and North America to explore the processes that shape the experiences and challenges faced by migrants and refugees who originate in countries of Islamic cultures. It addresses the realities of diasporic life for self-identified Muslims, addressing questions of integration, rights and equality before the law, and challenging stereotypical views of Muslims.

Waar is de Hofstadgroep?

Het lijkt al weer een eeuwigheid geleden dat de kranten volstonden met de Hofstadgroep. Nederlands enige echte ‘terreurorganisatie’ van de laatste 10 jaar. De groep jongeren rondom Mohammed Bouyeri werd in de debatten exemplarisch voor alles wat er mis is met islam en moslims: agressief, onmogelijk (cultureel) te integreren, onbetrouwbaar en een stel idioten. De gretigheid waarmee men deze groep als terreurgroep wilde aanmerken kwam vooral tot uiting toen het gerechtshof tot het oordeel kwam dat ze geen terroristische organisatie waren. Nadat het OM in cassatie ging tegen die beslissing verwees de Hoge Raad de zaak terug naar het Gerechtshof. Dat gerechtshof heeft nu het oordeel geveld dat de groep wel een terroristische organisatie was. Een opmerkelijke en zeer belangrijke rechtzaak waar ik de nodige twijfels bij heb. Zoals ik ook de nodige twijfels heb bij het gebrek aan media aandacht hiervoor.

New Book – Identity and Participation in Culturally Diverse Societies: A Multidisciplinary Perspective

Together with Roel Meijer I wrote a chapter Going All the Way: Politicization and Radicalization of the Hofstad Network in the Netherlands. In this chapter we analyze the shift from a politicized identity to a radicalized identity of (members of) the Hofstad network. This chapter will be published in Identity and Participation in Culturally Diverse Societies: A Multidisciplinary Perspective edited by Assaad E. Azzi, Xenia Chryssochoou, Bert Klandermans, Bernd Simon. The book presents an original discussion of how the links between identity, political participation, radicalization, and integration can provide a scientific understanding of the complex issue of coexistence between groups in culturally diverse societies.

Handboek en symposium over jongeren en religie

Zappers, relishoppers, legobouwers. Jongeren in Nederland; je ziet ze nauwelijks nog in de kerk of de moskee. Toch zijn ze wel degelijk bezig met zingeving en religieuze activiteiten. Ze bewegen zich in diffuse sociale netwerken en zijn moeilijk te traceren, laat staan langdurig te binden. Hoe stellen deze jongeren hun eigen bouwpakket van zingeving samen en waaruit kiezen ze? Uit de tradities van de grote wereldreligies? En waaruit nog meer? Welk effect heeft de religieuze erfenis van ouders op jongeren? Welke bronnen boren moslimjongeren aan voor hun religieuze zingeving? Wat voor adviezen kunnen jongerenwerkers geven aan religieuze instituten? Het Handboek jongeren en religie toont de stand van zaken met betrekking tot onderzoek naar christelijke en moslimjongeren en laat zien welke rol voor godsdienstige instituten als de kerk en de moskee kan zijn weggelegd.

PEW – Muslim Networks and Movements in Western-Europe

A new report by the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life, “Muslim Networks and Movements in Western Europe,” profiles several of the oldest, largest and most influential Muslim groups operating in Western Europe today. The report focuses on transnational networks and movements whose origins lie in the Muslim world but that now have an established presence in Western Europe, and examines how such movements seek to influence the views and daily lives of Muslims living there.

11 september en islam – 10 punten over religie en geweld

Eén van de belangrijkste kenmerken van de nasleep van 9/11 is het gegeven dat veel moslims het gevoel hebben zich voortdurend te moeten verantwoorden over zaken waar ze part noch deel aan hebben (zie het programma ZOZ van de VPRO). Hoewel een groot deel van de aanslagplegers van 9/11 voorafgaand aan hun religieuze radicalisering al in politieke zin geradicaliseerd waren en beide vormen van radicalisering zich bij hen vooral in Europa voltrok, staat toch hun religieuze achtergrond centraal in veel discussies. In deze bijdrage waarom er geen causale relatie ligt tussen islam en geweld, maar waarom religie en geweld wel onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden zijn.

Young Muslims have been thrust into the global spotlight in relation to questions about security and extremism, work and migration, and rights and citizenship. This book interrogates the cultures and politics of Muslim youth in the global South and North to understand their trajectories, conditions, and choices.

Radicalization Series IV – Salafism as a Utopian Movement

There are many different approaches for research on Salafism and they all make clear that, although Salafism has some distinguishing features, the movement is quite diverse with many doctrinary contradictions and clashes and different politico-theological tendencies. It is therefore difficult to define Salafism in a clear, consistent way. Most definitions of Salafism focus on ideological differences or view them in a security perspective. Although helpful it does not take into account identity, gender or the idea that security and radicalization are themselves cultural constructions with specific local, national and transnational dimensions. They also take up the official doctrines, methods and identities of spokespersons and religious authorities but ignore the perspectives, ideas and practices of participants in the movements. In this entry I explore the Salafi movement in a more anthropological way focusing on the processes of meaning-making within the perspective of utopian movements.

Hollanda Multifestijn Festivali 2010 – Leiderschap en onbehagen

Afgelopen week vond in de Veemarkthallen in Utrecht het Multifestijn plaats. Van hypotheken tot tapijten (voor spotprijzen!), van de prachtige Ebru kunst tot politieke debatten, van de politie tot reisbureau’s en van de koninklijke marechaussee tot Hogeschool Inholland tot lekkernijen; het was er allemaal. Vrijdag organiseerde het Euro Ilim Instituut samen met Hogeschool Inholland een miniconferentie georganiseerd met als titel ‘Het maatschappelijk onbehagen over de islam in de Nederlandse samenleving. Kwestie van falend leiderschap?’ Sprekers waren Rasit Bal, voorzitter van het Contact Orgaan Moslims en Overheid (CMO) en coördinator van de imamopleiding aan Hogeschool InHolland. Abdulwahid van Bommel schrijver, vertaler en docent islam was spreker. Evenals ondergetekende.
