the case of Palestine seems to become more and more central to the global justice movement. Much of the attention of the public goes out to the violent resistance of Hamas and other insurgent groups and we do not hear much about non-violent resistance. The current Flotilla case is an exception. Anne de Jong, a Dutch anthropologist studying Palestinian/Israelian nonviolent resistance was part of the Flotilla together with a Palestinian-Dutch activist.

Pedagogiek – De moskee als partner in het onderwijs
Kan een moskee een partner zijn voor het voortgezet onderwijs? Dit onderwerp komt aan bod in een special van het Tijdschrift Pedagogiek. Dit themanummer is gebaseerd op de jarenlange praktijk in Gouda waar moskee An Nour een project verzorgde voor schoolloopbaanbegeleiding voor Marokkaans-Nederlandse en (later ook) autochtone Nederlandse jongens en meisjes. In dit nummer aandacht voor de debatten en conflicten door voortkwamen uit de samenwerking van deze moskee met jeugdhulpverleningsinstelling RCJ/Het Woonhuis en Goudse scholen. Vanuit antropologische, rechtsfilosofische, ethiek en godsdienstfilosofie invalshoeken wordt gereflecteerd over deze specifieke pedagogische casus.

Cartoonesque 16 – Freedom: Drawing Muhammad and Banning the Burqa
Last week it was Everybody Draw Muhammad Day meant as a protest against attempts to limit freedom. At the same time the burqa ban is on its way Europe. As is the case in many of the cartoon-like controversies of recent, the complexity of political and religious issues pertaining to depictions of the sacred key symbols and freedom of speech, was reduced to a polarization of two antagonistic and mutually intolerant activisms: islamist groups vs. free freedom. Althought both the ban and the cartoon day may be aimed at radical it in fact targets Muslim as a whole. Both the Everybody Draw Muhammad Day and the burqa bans have in common that they are attempts to express and affirm a moral superiority over Muslims that need to be freed from their patriarchic religion that limits people’s freedom.

Hollanda Multifestijn Festivali 2010 – Leiderschap en onbehagen
Afgelopen week vond in de Veemarkthallen in Utrecht het Multifestijn plaats. Van hypotheken tot tapijten (voor spotprijzen!), van de prachtige Ebru kunst tot politieke debatten, van de politie tot reisbureau’s en van de koninklijke marechaussee tot Hogeschool Inholland tot lekkernijen; het was er allemaal. Vrijdag organiseerde het Euro Ilim Instituut samen met Hogeschool Inholland een miniconferentie georganiseerd met als titel ‘Het maatschappelijk onbehagen over de islam in de Nederlandse samenleving. Kwestie van falend leiderschap?’ Sprekers waren Rasit Bal, voorzitter van het Contact Orgaan Moslims en Overheid (CMO) en coördinator van de imamopleiding aan Hogeschool InHolland. Abdulwahid van Bommel schrijver, vertaler en docent islam was spreker. Evenals ondergetekende.

Shariah4Belgium en Al Qaeda
Vorige week wisten diverse kranten en blogs te melden dat Sharia4Belgium in de persoon van Abu Imraan steun en advies heeft gekregen van Abu Muhammad al Maqdisi: Al Qaeda topman, Al Qaeda terrorist, en raadgever Al Qaeda. De link met Al Qaeda past aardig in de toch al overdreven hype rondom deze club.
