In 1993 Huntington published his influential thesis the Clash of Civilizations? When used in political rhetoric combined with atrocities such as 9/11 messages such as these become seemingly incontestable because reality is reduced in such a way as to be seen as inherent in the way things are.
In the case of Brussels and France people quickly pointed out that the perpetrators were salafists as a synonym for radical Muslims and Islam. The dichotomy between liberal Islam and radical Islam therefore emphasizes the need for reform in Islam, but in practice actually prevents that. The unreflected, taken for granted use of the label salafism says more about current society and politics in Europe than about Islam and Muslims and mainly serves the political elite.

Stichting Praemium Erasmianum kent een studieprijs toe aan het proefschrift van Joas Wagemakers, onderzoeker en docent Islam & Arabisch aan de Radboud Universiteit. Wagemakers promoveerde in november 2010 cum laude op zijn dissertatie over de Jordaanse radicaal-islamitische ideoloog Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi.
De Internationale Spectator van Instituut Clingendael heeft een themanummer over ‘Europese’ Islam. Met artikelen van o.a. M. Berger, R. Meijer en uw blogger waarin aandacht besteed wordt aan ‘islamisering’ en transnationale islamitische bewegingen.
Op vrijdag 7 oktober vond in Den Haag een protest plaats tegen het mogelijke verbod op het dragen van de gezichtssluier. Het protest was niet geheel omstreden. Hier een korte impressie.
The following text was used for a spoken column at the ICCT’s expert meeting on Freedom from Fear: Answering Terrorism with Public Resilience on 3 October 2011. Fear is a drug, and policies and management tactics combined with politicians who use feelings of insecurity and plead loudly for ever harder measures to resolve fear, are nothing less than socially accepted models to achieve ritualistic highs and illusions of safety that in the end do nothing except than cultivate that fear.
