Postmodernity goes to war
by Philip Hammond
In 1991 the philosopher Jean Baudrillard offered a postmodernist assessment of the Gulf War – predicting that it would not take place, asking if it was ‘really’ taking place, and claiming that it ‘did not take place’ .
“If conservative commentators exaggerate the extent of postmodern intellectuals’ anti-Americanism, postmodernists are apt to overestimate the elite’s ‘universal absolutes’. The war on terrorism claims to be a war for Western values. On 5 March 2004, Blair argued that: ‘The best defence of our security lies in the spread of our values’, and that ‘we cannot advance these values except within a framework that recognises their universality’ (29). Yet it would be more accurate to say that it is a war fought over the crisis of Western values. In Foreign Affairs, the house journal of the US foreign policy establishment, even ardent Atlanticist Dominique Mosi felt called upon to ask ‘Does “the West” still exist?’. As Mosi observed, ‘Islamic fundamentalism, international terrorism, and weapons of mass destruction (WMD) have not had the same unifying effect as yesterday’s Soviet threat’.”

Well here we have the hizjab-debate in a nutshell. An article by dr. Saleem Qureshi from the university of alberta (canada) on this debate with examples from Turkey and France.

Islam, in light of 9/11, is
theology journals focus
By Jeff Robinson
Jun 8, 2004
In the Southern Baptist Journal of Theology an attempt to shed light on de ‘fundamental’ tenets of Islam, by examaning the so called key aspects of the faith from ‘jihad’ to “Isa’ (Jesus). My advice: do not read it as an account of the motivations of muslims but as a baptist view on islam that is scaringly close to that of the neo-fundamentalists in islam.

TERRORISM MONITOR
Volume 2 Issue 11 (Jun 03, 2004)
SOFT POWER AND THE PSYCHOLOGY OF SUICIDE BOMBING
In the Jamestown Foundation Terrorism Monitor an article on the relation between real or imagined grievances and suicide attacks.
“Current political and economic conditions that policymakers are monitoring remain important although not necessarily determinant. Rather, what likely matters more is the promise of redeeming real or imagined historical grievances through a religious (or transcendent ideological) mission that empowers the militarily weak with unexpected force against enemies materially much stronger. This was as true for Jewish Zealots who sacrificed themselves to kill Romans two millennia ago as it is for modern Jihadists.”
[…]
“Shows of military strength are not the way to end the growing menace of suicide terrorism: witness the failure of Israels and Russias coercive efforts to end strings of Palestinian and Chechen suicide bombings. Rather, nations most threatened by suicide terrorism should promote democracy, but be ready to accept democracys paradox: representatives who America and its democratic allies dont like, who have different values or ways of doing things, must be accepted as long as this does not generate violence. Democratic self-determination in Palestine, Kashmir and Iraq or for that matter, Pakistan, Uzbekistan and Saudi Arabia will more likely reduce terrorism than military and counterinsurgency aid. At the same time, America and its allies need to establish an intense dialogue with Muslim religious and community leaders to reconcile Islamic custom and religious law (shariah) with internationally recognized standards for crime and punishment and human rights.”

A U.S. federal appeals court has upheld a lower court ruling that bible classes in public schools are unconstitutional. The ruling concerned public school bible classes in Rhea County, Tennessee, home of the 1920s Scopes Monkey Trial. A second story reports that another federal appeals court has upheld a lower court ruling that a cross in the Mojave National Preserve is unconstitutional.
