NPR : Europe, Islam’s New Front Line: Germany
The death of a Dutch filmmaker, at the hands of a suspected Muslim extremist, has Germans anxious that religious unrest will spread to their own country. NPR’s Sylvia Poggioli continues a five-part series on Europe as the emerging battlefield in the struggle to define Muslim identity.

IslamOnline – Art & Entertainment Section
By Tarek. A Ghanem
As a medium, the Internet, with its setting and structure, seems to favor modernist Islam. For the Internet, with its basic notion of unlimited access to all, provides equal footing for the qualified and the commoner alike. There is now the boundless and self-perpetuating electronic space where everyone is free to publish their interpretation and judgment. The Quran and the Sunnah are being discussed on popular forums, unlike the in the 7th century, for example, when the discussion of such topics was confined to qualified and specialized scholars. Oversimplification and then absolutization seem to be the order of the day. This has led to what Hofheinz has termed My Islam: a lingo spread on discussion forums and personal web sites wherein generalizations and statements like the Islam I know Islam as everyone knows is are familiar; hence, My Islam.

Dr. Sarah Badran wrote a letter to Osama Bin Laden: ” There is among people one whose words about this world’s life may please you greatly and who calls on God to witness what is in his heart; yet such a one is most stubborn in dispute. And when he turns his back, he goes about the earth, spreading corruption and destroying tillage and progeny, and God does not love corruption. (Quran 2:204-205)”
Don’t know if he listens…

Trouw, nieuws & achtergronden – Geen verplicht handjes schuddenDrie zoenen ter begroeting in Nederland, twee in Frankrijk, en in Egypte lopen mannen gearmd over straat.

Religion News Blog : Terror probes turn up an even more zealous brand of Islamic militancy
An ultra-radical Islamic ideology mixing zealot-like devotion and holy war creed is drawing more scrutiny in anti-terrorist probes from the Middle East to Europe with increasing indications that its base on the fringes of Islamic extremism could be widening.
In existence since the 1960s, al-Takfir wa al-Hijra has offered intellectual inspiration to al-Qaida and other militant groups. But authorities now worry about followers becoming more aggressive with recruitment and retaliation against perceived foes of Islam, such as Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh.

SR.com: Terrorists raise cash online, expert says
Under cross-examination by defense attorney Chuck Peterson, Paz acknowledged that he has some of the same materials that were identified in court posted on his own Web site.
Those include The Intifada and the New Tartars, a searing anti-Israel lecture given by extremist Saudi Sheikh Safar Alhawali, for which Al-Hussayen helped arrange a three-hour live Internet broadcast. Paz said the lengthy anti-Jewish, anti-Israel and anti-American diatribe has since been published as a book.
I downloaded it from the Internet, from Alhawali’s Web site, he said.
But Paz said he posts extremist material, including graphic pictures he downloaded from an Islamist Web site, for use by researchers around the world not to advocate their content.
They do not appear here on Islamist Web sites, Paz said.
No, they appear on your Web site, Peterson responded. Yes, Paz said.

Islam becoming weekend affair, The Milli Gazette, Vol.5 No.15, MG109 (1-15 Aug 04)
Religion, for most of the baby-boomers, my contemporaries, has become a weekend thing, where offering Friday prayers means absolution from everything that is required of a Muslim. One only needs to drive around town on a Friday to find traffic jams on the streets housing the fashionable, mostly air-conditioned mosques, yet the same mosques witness fewer, if any, visitors during morning prayers.

A Muslim braves Europe’s secular zealots
TORONTO As a young Canadian Muslim who has called for reform in Islam, I’ve been traveling throughout North America and Europe over the past year. Last week, I toured France and Spain. God help me.
.
I didn’t expect a warm reception from fellow Muslims. But now, I’m also not sure that liberal Muslims like me fit comfortably in a secular European crowd. I say this even after the murder of Theo van Gogh, the Dutch filmmaker, who the police say was shot and stabbed by a Muslim extremist. Van Gogh had exercised his right to criticize Islam – a right that I, as a modern Muslim, defend unequivocally.

“The new Ramadan has changed our customs beyond recognition,” he wrote. “What has become of neighbors exchanging plates before iftar? What has become of the people in a neighborhood coming together for talk and discussion after taraweeh prayers? Couldn’t we bring back some of these customs in place of an hour or two of satellite TV? Wouldn’t we all be richer if we did?”

The Daily Star – Book Reviews – Islam and the West: Essays dispense with hidden mythologies
The stated aim of “Shaping the Current Islamic Reformation” is to steer a middle course between the two extremes of academia and the media. According to its jacket, it seeks to “go beyond the media presentation of the impact of a politicised notion of Islam in the region and to consider the reality that lies behind current issues in the region and the role that an embedded Islam has played or may play.” Admittedly a book should never be judged by either its cover or its jacket, but editor B. A. Roberson’s introductory essay goes on to reaffirm that the book’s objective is to attempt to offer a more balanced view of the region than traditionally presented in the Western media “from news to film which very often trades on the incompatibility of Islamic or Muslim culture and ideas with modernity.

Since the release of MEMRI’s study – and regardless of the information accumulated about the identities of the perpetrators – officials, journalists, and religious leaders throughout the Arab and Muslim world have continued to claim that the perpetrators of the attacks (of 9/11) were not Arabs or Muslims. The claim that American and or Jewish/Israeli elements carried out the attacks has become an accepted, albeit false, and common myth in the Arab world, to the point that U.S. President George W. Bush and Secretary of State Colin Powell have been accused of masterminding the attacks.
This updated report, which is based on research compiled over the past five months, reveals another trend that has emerged in the Arab media whereby Arab writers have begun to base their fictitious allegations on the widely discredited “research” of Western sources such as former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke and Holocaust denier Roger Garaudy. The apparent intent of the Arab writers is to add credibility to their false allegations by relying on Western sources whose claims they erroneously believe will be readily accepted by a Western audience.
