Summary: Thinking of modern jihad as simply a cultural extension of Islam is a common, and unfortunate, mistake. Two new books by Gilles Kepel and Olivier Roy offer better historical and sociological explanations, but they are only a start.

Mahmood Mamdani is Herbert Lehman Professor of Government at Columbia University and the author of Good Muslim, Bad Muslim: America, the Cold War, and the Roots of Terror.

In de stad bestaat een wereld die zich aan het zicht van brave burgers onttrekt. Van jonge, meestal allochtone mannen, uit niet de beste buurten. Elke dag kiezen zij tussen goed en fout. In een korte reeks praten zij over ‘het leven van de straat’. Vandaag in deel ��n: Moussa (30) uit Den Haag. ,,Ik was neergestoken en lag in het ziekenhuis. Even voelde ik me vrij.”

Al-Zarqawi was everywhere, his bombers striking in Mosul, Baghdad, Samarra, Najaf, Baquba, Ramadi and Falluja. Islamist websites published accounts of al-Zarqawi’s actions, and the western media, together with western intelligence services, ran with these stories, giving them credibility. The al-Zarqawi legend, if one can call it that, was born.

The problem is, there is simply no substance to this legend, as US marines are now finding out. Rather than extremist foreign fighters battling to the death, the marines are mostly finding local men from Falluja who are fighting to defend their city from what they view as an illegitimate occupier. The motivations of these fighters may well be anti-American, but they are Iraqi, not foreign, in origin.

Vorige maand werd Theo van Gogh op beestachtige wijze vermoord door een Marokkaanse extremist. De Amsterdamse Wethouder Ahmed Aboutaleb deed kort na de moord een oproep aan de Marokkaanse moeders. Hij wilde dat zij stelling namen.
MUG sprak met een aantal moeders. En twee deskundigen.

Now Muslim WakeUp (yes those people people from Enough with the prudes, sex & the Umma) wonders what mufti’s might think of them…

Modern Marokko is meer dan couscous en buikdanseressen. Het jaar Marokko-Nederland 2005 moet twee culturen bij elkaar brengen.

Een jaar lang Marokko-Nederland 2005: valkuilen vol clichés liggen op de loer. Maar modeontwerper Aziz Bekkaoui, aanjager van een van de tientallen projecten, is beslist: ,,De meeste mensen die meedoen, verafschuwen de clichébeelden van Marokko, met buikdanseressen en couscous. Wij willen juist laten zien hoe de twee culturen elkaar beïnvloeden. Zelfs in de tussentoontjes bij RTL Boulevard hoor je dat, of in ringtones.”

Het jaar Marokko-Nederland 2005 gaat vandaag officieel van start, met de opening van een tentoonstelling in De Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam door prins Willem-Alexander en prins Moulay Rachid uit Marokko.

These more individualised forms of Islam are linked to fundamentalist violence. ‘Dutch public opinion is blaming foreign culture for the murder of Theo van Gogh’, Roy tells me, ‘but if you look at the background of the guy who did that, he is fluent in Dutch, he is a Dutch citizen, and you even have two converts from an American father and a Dutch mother who played a big role in the plot. Clearly the more radical violence is linked to the deterritorialisation and globalisation of Islam’.

Op zondag 19 december wordt in de Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam het nieuwe Midden-Oosten en Noord-Afrika tijdschrift ZemZem gepresenteerd. ZemZem is het enige onafhankelijke tijdschrift in Nederland en Belgi� over het Midden-Oosten, Noord-Afrika en de islam. Het eerste nummer van ZemZem is een Marokko-special. (zie onder voor inhoud)

Ter gelegenheid van het feestjaar “400 jaar betrekkingen Nederland-Marokko” in 2005 organiseert ZemZem zondag 19 december tussen 15.00 en 18.00 het grote debat: “400 jaar betrekkingen Nederland-Marokko: wat heb ik daarmee te maken?” in de Eggertzaal van de Nieuwe Kerk te Amsterdam.

Deze petities worden aangeboden aan de politiek en media. Wij hopen daarmee de beeldvorming van moslims in Nederland te verbeteren, en de dialoog tussen Nederlandse moslims en niet-moslims te bevorderen.
