Fatwa against Bin Laden

One year ago Spain was shocked by the attacks on trains in which many innocent people were killed. Today is an official day of mourning and Spanish Muslim leaders have announced they would issue a fatwa against al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. I haven’t seen it myself but some excerpts from the message can be found here:

The fatwa said that, according to the Koran, “the terrorist acts of Osama bin Laden and his organisation al-Qaeda… are totally banned and must be roundly condemned as part of Islam�.

And indeed, a fatwa is not a death sentence or a call to kill some one. It is a religious advice and not all of them have the same status.

Burgemeester Opstelten en dertig Marokkaanse organisaties in Rotterdam zijn hevig met elkaar in botsing gekomen. De organisaties hebben geweigerd een door het college opgestelde verklaring te tekenen.

Opstelten legde de Marokkanen vorige week op het stadhuis een verklaring voor over het actieprogramma ‘Meedoen of achterblijven‘ over de radicalisering van moslimjongeren. Hij vroeg ze hun handtekening te zetten onder ‘de hoofdlijnen van het programma’, ‘de rol van de betrokken organisaties bij de uitvoering’ en ‘de manier waarop wij structureel en constructief de dialoog aangaan’.

Volgens woordvoerder Mohammed Talbi hebben de organisaties nog steeds grote moeite met de nadruk op uitsluiting in het actieprogramma. Ook vinden ze de criteria voor radicalisme vaag. ,,We vrezen voor willekeur.” Daarnaast storen ze zich eraan dat het programma, dat grotendeels over de Marokkaanse gemeenschap gaat, zonder die gemeenschap tot stand is gebracht.

A Muslim woman breaks the taboos of her culture: using a pseudonym, she publishes an erotic tale divulging the secret sexual lives and cravings of Muslim women. The book was a phenomenon in France, but conservative Muslims have attacked it as trash. If her identity were revealed, she fears she would be stoned in her native Morocco.

You have to like her writing (for me it is a little bit to vulgar sometimes) but:

Nedjma wants to shock the world. Using an odd coupling of semon and prayer, she breaks the traditional wall of silence behind which Islamic women live and behind which their sex lives are obscured.

Although the muslim world has a rich erotic culture there is certainly some taboo on it as well :

Anger, says enigmatic author Nedjma, was probably the main motivation that propelled her book. Anger over the backwardness, the fanaticism, the delusion, the ignorance, and violence in the Arab world. Sexuality, pleasure in her own body, the separation of love and sin showed her the way to freedom. All the evils of an Islamic society that feels itself threatened by the West, and therefore constantly tempted to close itself in cultural autism, are mirrored in the oppression of women.

Wie leidt de dans…

Interessant commentaar in Trouw over dr. Kaou thar Darmoni, een Tunesische deskundige in de orientaalse dans. Zij stelt dat in de emancipatie van vrouwen, de man de norm is geweest.

Op de Internationale vrouwendag poneerde zij de stelling dat de vrouwen hier het contact met hun vrouwelijke kracht hebben verloren. Daaraan schrijft zij toe dat zo weinig van haar seksegenoten door het ‘glazen plafond’ zijn gebroken en de weinige vrouwen die wel tot de top doordrongen zo vaak op ‘half-mannen’ lijken.

En misschien nog wel provocerender:

Volgens Darmoni kunnen de vrouwen in Nederland nog het nodige van de Arabische cultuur leren, hoe vrouwonvriendelijk die ook is. Daarmee gaf ze tevens aan dat onze dominante cultuur wel degelijk iets van immigranten kan opsteken.

Nou niet gelijk in voorspelbare reflexen schieten, laat het eerst even rustig op je in werken (dan tot 10 tellen) en geef dan je reactie.

Islam's Culture War – Christianity Today Magazine

A review article Islam’s Culture War in Christianity Today Magazine on Why the Rest Hates the West from church historian Meic Pearse.

Pearse argues that Western culture has changed so much since the Enlightenment that Western “common sense” is no longer self-evident to other cultures. Islamic cultures believe the West is “barbaric,” showing lack of respect for the past, religion, family, and honor, while overindulging in sports, entertainment, and sex.

Woodberry agrees somewhat with this but he also argues:

I have recently been served a tv diet of American professional wrestling and the exhibitionism of former basketball player Dennis Rodman in a Pakistani airport and in an Arab-operated airplane, so I appreciate the author’s critique. But we should not overemphasize cultural issues. A Pew survey in June 2003 that reported growing Islamic rage at the United States also found that Muslims are attracted to democratic freedoms. A poll of 50 countries found that people even in monarchies (like Jordan and Kuwait) and more authoritarian states (like Uzbekistan and Pakistan) desire freedom of expression and of the press, multiparty systems, and equal treatment under the law.

Nog nooit van gehoord, nu gelezen inTrouw, religie & filosofie – Jezus-Moslims

Volgens de Belgische zendeling en theologiestudent Jaap Hansum, afgelopen weken in orthodox-christelijke media aan het woord, is een Jezus-moslim niet alleen iemand die zich door de koranische Isa (Jezus) laat inspireren. ,,Hij aanvaardt de kern van het evangelie, inclusief het verzoeningswerk van Christus en zijn opstanding.”

Een Jezus-moslim is iemand die zich als een moslim gedraagt, maar zich ook tot het christendom aangetrokken voelt. Hij of zij doet mee aan het gebed in de moskee en aan de ramadan en draagt wellicht islamitische kleding. Jezus-moslims hebben zich meestal niet laten dopen, en doen niet mee aan het avondmaal, dat in de veelal evangelische kerken die ze bezoeken, is voorbehouden aan gelovigen die ‘all the way’ gaan.

In het artikel wordt onder andere de vraag gesteld of dit nu een overgangsfase is of gewoon een nieuwe stroming. Waarschijnlijk zijn beide zeer goed mogelijk.

Hoodlums

I call this entry hoodlums, because I find it a beautiful word, although reality is less beautiful. It was mentioned before in this blog: in the UK Criminal gangs use Islam to intimidate victims

Teenage criminal gangs in south London are calling themselves the Muslim Boys and claiming to espouse Islam in an attempt to gain street credibility and trade on false perceptions about links to terrorists.

Islam is used here as a symbol of a counter-identity.

But Metropolitan police chiefs and Muslim leaders say the youths have no genuine Islamic affiliations, nor any associations with al-Qaida linked groups.

This counteridentity seems to be inspired more by American youthgang cultures than by Islam

They talk in slang, much of it derived from black American rap music, place great store on having guns, and live by a code, where showing disrespect to a fellow gang member could be enough to get your head blown off.

“They began using the name Muslim Boys as a macho thing,” said Mr Coles. “One or two might have converted to Islam. But it’s nothing to do with religion, or terrorism. As far as I’m concerned they’re the same thugs, engaged in the same crimes, whatever they can do to make money.

It is used to create a strong streetwise identity with a mixture of popular ‘islamic’ images and gangculture. The word Hoodlum is also perfectly suited for this; so lets call them hoodlums.
