KABUL, May 17 (Reuters) – Several hundred Afghan widows gathered on Tuesday to demand the immediate release of a kidnapped Italian aid worker who had been helping them and thousands of other impoverished widows support themselves.

Clementina Cantoni, 32, from Lombardy, who works for the CARE International aid agency, was kidnapped on Monday after the car in which she was travelling in Kabul was intercepted and blocked by gunmen in another car.

“She was a very kind woman. We ask the government of Afghanistan to take all possible steps for her immediate release,” said Shah Jan, speaking at a dusty aid distribution compound on the outskirts of Kabul.

Op 27 november publiceerde Geert Mak ‘een kleine geschiedenis van november‘ over Nederland van en na Van Gogh. Een zeer interessant en lezenswaardig stuk vooral als je in ogenschouw neemt dat het zo snel na de moord is geschreven. Goed, er zaten wel wat missers in, en niet iedereen deelde zijn kritiek op de term ‘moslimterrorisme’, maar ik vond het een goed stuk. Juist ook vanwege de kritiek op de term ‘moslimterrorisme‘.

Mijn verbazing was dan ook groot toen zijn pamflet Gedoemd tot kwetsbaarheid verscheen. Ongekend veel fouten (met groot enthousiasme gezocht door velen en gevonden dus ook)en zeer boude vergelijking tussen Submission en ‘Der ewige Jude’. Dat Mak stelt dat het hier om een technische vergelijking gaat en hij beide films niet op het zelfde plan plaatst, ok daar ga ik in mee aangezien dat ook wel mijn indruk was bij het lezen van dat (overigens zeer kleine) deel. Probleem is natuurlijk dat hij daarmee de schijn wekt dat het een neutrale vergelijking is en dat is het niet. WOII en de nazi’s vormen een soort moreel ijkpunt, een brandpunt van alles wat slecht is en iedere vergelijking krijgt dat automatisch mee.

Nu is er dan eindelijk zijn reactie o p schrift en bij het programma Rondom Tien. Oordeel zelf maar:

Leen Sterckx studeerde ociologie aan de KU Leuven. Zij mag zich ook Europees Master in de Arbeidswetenschappen noemen na verdere opleiding aan de UC Louvain-la-Neuve en aan het Instituto Superior de Ciencias do Trabalho e da Empresa in Lissabon (1999). Haar interesses liggen vooral op het gebied van arbeid, sociaal beleid en etnische minderheden. Carolien Bouw organiseerde en beheerde netwerken en werkgroepen op onder meer het terrein van vrouwenstudies, gezinsonderzoek en huishoudtechnologie en organiseerde debatten over criminologische kwesties. Zij redigeerde verschillende bundels, waaronder, samen met Ruth Oldenziel, Schoon genoeg : huisvrouwen en huishoudtechnologie in Nederland 1898-1998 (Nijmegen : SUN, 1998). Daarnaast publiceerde ze artikelen over meisjes en misdaad. Daarnaast heeft ze, samen met anderen, onderzoek verricht naar het het succes van Marokkaanse meisjes en naar stadskinderen. Gezamenlijk hebben zij het onderzoek ‘Een ander succes’ geschreven, waarover de lezing ging. Het beeld bestaat dat Marokkaanse meisjes het beter doen in de Nederlandse samenleving dan hun broers en neven. Samen met het SCP onderzocht SISWO in hoeverre deze beeldvorming klopt met de werkelijkheid. In het onderwijs zijn de Marokkaanse meisjes hun achterstand op de jongens en andere groepen op spectaculaire wijze aan het inlopen. Maar in weerwil van het populaire beeld doen ze het nog steeds niet beter. Bovendien is hun succes op de arbeidsmarkt niet eenduidig. Hun arbeidsparticipatie neemt toe, maar zoals vele jonge vrouwen worstelen ook Marokkaanse meisjes met de combinatie van werken met die andere ambities: huwelijk en moederschap.

Voorzitter was ondergetekende en discussant was Marjo Buitelaar van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Marjo Buitelaar is antropologe en verbonden aan de vakgroep algemene godsdienstwetenschap van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Zij doet onderzoek naar hoogopgeleide Marokkaanse vrouwen van de tweede generatie. Zij schreef onder andere het boek Ramadan, sultan van alle maanden en recentelijk het voorwoord in de Nederlandse vertaling van het boek van Amina Wudud De Koran en de vrouw.

[The following presentation was made at the Los Angeles Latino Muslim Association’s annual meeting, April 16 2005.]

Technology and New Opportunities for Community Building and Activism

I want to cover four major themes in this presentation. First, I want to say a couple of words about ijtihad, or independent reasoning in Islam. Then, I want to use the concept of open source software to help illustrate the differences between a closed and an open religious system. Third, I want to suggest a methodology for those of us committed to practicing ijtihad in an open system. And finally, I want to suggest ways to use new information and communication technologies to aid in this process. As an example of such applications of technology, I will give a brief introduction to blogs, or web journals.

If we think back to the so-called ‘golden age’ of Islam, we would recognize many characteristics of the kind of ‘open’ system I have summarized here: research, independent reasoning, debate, the forming of networks across spaces and institutions, and even across different religious and cultural affinities. Innovation was encouraged then. Ijtihad was seen as a necessity. But with innovation and ijtihad came responsibility. Let’s embrace that responsibility again, and let’s do our part in ensuring that all of humanity works together towards a more peaceful, just and enlightened existence.

As soon as I feel able, I will be posting a new blog entry on some of the most interesting comments I’ve received, including those that attempt to place my attack in the context of Dutch struggles on immigration issues.

If you would have told me when I first came out that at some point in my life I would be beaten up for being gay, I would never have imagined it like this. As a child of the South, where “fag” and “queer” were everyday insults, I would have expected a fist to the face somewhere back home for sure.

Fjordman: Is Swedish Democracy Collapsing?

A top Muslim scholar said the Muslim minority in Sweden would abide by Swedish law in confronting a Christian preacher who insulted Prophet Muhammad, urging his fellow Swedish Muslims not to take the law into their own hands or commit any violent acts to avenge the remarks of the Christian cleric. Norwegian celebrity evangelist preacher Runar Sï¿½gaard, in a sermon at Filadelfia church in Stockholm on March 20, repeated claims that Muhammad was “a confused pedophile” since his wives included a girl aged nine years old. Sï¿½gaard is under protection by Swedish police after receiving death threats. The sermon has triggered fears of a religious war in Sweden. It is essential according to Islamic teachings to respond to those who defame Muhammad. Muslim extremists in Sweden have urged Al-Qaida’s al-Zarqawi to take action in the matter, and radicals of the Salafyist variety have posted a very explicit threat to launch a wave of terrorist attacks against Sweden because of the “insult”. The threats were posted on a number of known Islamist forums and were accompanied by rather lurid graphics.

It’s seem like Sweden gets its share of problems with militants. Many of the problems and issues described in Fjordman’s piece, are probably familiar for the Dutch, certainly for the Fortuynists. I was wondering however, as we can see a kind of countermovement (well the early beginning of it) against these anti-western militants on many of the Dutch forums and MSN-groups, is there a kind of countermovement among Muslims in Sweden?

The message of the Swedish militants is strikingly similar of that of the Dutch: jihad, jihad and again jihad. What to do after jihad? They don’t know. When you look at the questions and needs of most young Muslims, you will see that these militants don’t have an answer. They only have some kind of answer on some political issues. Their religious language therefore can not conceal that we are dealing with political militants and not religious militants per sï¿½.

The connect gangraping and all that with Islam (muslims) is ridiculous (and nowhere is the proof in the article) but nevertheless very important for the image of muslims among non-muslims. It is also an example of what happens in the rest of the article of Fjordman. The anti-establishment message is connected with crime-issues, migration and (a lack of) swedish culture and identity. It looks somewhat like a pre-fortuyn era in Sweden and when someone like Fortuyn will show up there, he/she will probably be able to get a lot of votes.

Sweden is already a banana republic, perhaps on its way to becoming an Islamic republic. Swedish culture is disappearing with astonishing speed in front of our eyes. If the trend isn’t stopped, the Swedish nation will simply cease to exist in any meaningful way during the first half of this century. The country that gave us Bergman, ABBA and Volvo could become known as the Bosnia of northern Europe. The “Swedish model” will no longer refer to a stable and peaceful state with an advanced economy, but an Eurabian horror story of utopian multiculturalism, Socialist mismanagement and runaway immigration. Sweden has national elections in 2006. This will be one of the last opportunities the country has to resolve its towering internal tensions in peaceful and civilized ways. Some fear it’s already too late.

Let’s hope for the Swedes that they will realize in time that multiculturalism isn’t the solution for the problems and that Fortuynesque politics isn’t the solution either.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — (OfficialWire) — 05/01/05 — Because Sir Ridely Scott’s new epic “Kingdom of Heaven” was filmed against the backdrop of the Crusades, it is likely to stir up religious passions still associated with that centuries-long conflict. (“Kingdom” is scheduled to open in theaters nationwide May 6.)

Many Muslims were concerned about the possibility of religious or ethnic stereotyping when they first heard that yet another Hollywood movie would feature Arab-Muslim characters. That concern was not without valid precedent.

American Muslim representatives recently took part in a screening of “Kingdom.” They said the film is a “positive” depiction of Islamic culture during the Crusades. They also said that one of the film’s most striking messages, that Muslims and Christians can live together in peace, will provide an opportunity for increased interfaith dialogue.

In the film, the bad guys are not all Muslims and the Christians are not all angels. Perhaps “Kingdom of Heaven” will do for Muslims that Kevin Costner’s “Dances with Wolves” did for Native Americans, humanize a perceived “other.”

Unfortunately, Internet chat rooms and talk radio shows are already abuzz with the concerns of those who cannot fathom how Muslims can be portrayed as dignified, proud and humane people for whom the ends did not justify the means. Media reports indicated that some conservative Christian are “marshalling their forces” against the film, claiming it is “insulting and unfair.”

Rotterdam Court has ordered the release from jail of an 18-year-old terror suspect but remanded 11 other suspected members of the Hofstad group in custody.

The prosecutor has accused the defendants of forming a terrorist network and planning attacks against government targets and the murder of politicians such as MPs Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Geert Wilders.

Prosecutor Plooy claimed for the first time on Tuesday that Mohammed B. played a leading role in the Hofstad group. Previously, the security service AIVD and justice officials suspected B. was on the fringe of the group.

An initial study of Islam and Muslim environments in cyberspace proves that there is a great chance for representing Islam and Muslims.

Using the Internet as an alternative and interpersonal form of communication may help to break the traditional cycle of stereotyping among Muslims themselves and between Muslims and others. A more profound and deliberate study may lead us to recognize the possibility of reunderstanding and rediscovering not only the other but also Muslim self-understanding.

To a certain extent, any study of Muslims using the Internet may begin with the predictable psychological barrier between committed Muslims and the media. This was reflected in a discussion on whether the Internet is lawful or prohibited, as the Internet seems to raise issues of pornography and privacy. One Muslim user lamented, ï¿½The already critical social problems of Muslim youth at present will be further worsened by the emerging Internet technology.ï¿½ 1 This was an expected argument among the various reactions.

De Lintjesbui is ook gevallen in Gouda. Twee Marokkaanse vrouwen en ï¿½ï¿½n man waren onder gelukkigen. Zij zijn alledrie lid in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau:

* Mevrouw A. Chouli-Ben Chekh wegens haar rol als voortrekker in het contact tussen Marokkaanse vrouwen en vrouwen van andere nationaliteiten. Ze is ook mede-oprichtster van het Centrum Buitenlandse Vrouwen.

* Naima Mellah-El Yaakoubi was ook betrokken bij het Centrum Buitelandse Vrouwen. Zij zette zich ook in voor huiswerkbegeleiding van Marokkaanse meisjes en ze was lid van de Allochtonenraad. Ze werd lid in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau.

* Haar broer Hamid El Yaakoubi kreeg het lintje voor zijn actieve vrijwillige inzet voor de jeugd in buurthuis De Speelwinkel.

Hamid heeft het AD nog te woord gestaan:
Hamid: ‘Ik stond te trillen op mijn benen’
Hij was eigenlijk gekomen voor zijn gedecoreerde zus, Naï¿½ma.

Dus toen burgemeester Cornelis van Gouda hï¿½m in de schouwburg naar die ene, opvallend leeg gebleven stoel op podium wees, moest Hamid El Yaakoubi even slikken.

De 33-jarige Gouwenaar van Marokkaanse afkomst was gisteren de jongste Nederlander die een lintje kreeg uitgereikt. Zijn jarenlange inzet voor het Goudse buurthuis De Speelwinkel, de jaarlijkse Oranjeboulevard op Koninginnedag en een jeugdsociï¿½teit waren niet onopgemerkt gebleven.

,,Ik wist niet wat me overkwam”, vertelt hij. ,,Toen de burgemeester over die lege stoel begon, dacht ik dat die misschien voor iemand was die ziek is of in het buitenland zit. Toen zei hij dat de stoel voor iemand in de zaal was. Ik heb niet vï¿½ï¿½l haar, maar er was geen haar op mijn hoofd die dacht dat ï¿½k het zou zijn. Ik stond te trillen op mijn benen.”

Eenmaal bekomen van de schok en de verrassing, probeert Hamid in de foyer van de schouwburg na te gaan wie hem heeft voorgedragen. Overal om hem heen wordt geglimlacht, maar het mysterie blijft onopgehelderd. Hij is vereerd maar blijft bescheiden. ,,De mensen die vrijwilligerswerk doen, doen dat natuurlijk niet om een koninklijke onderscheiding te krijgen. Maar het is een waanzinnig groot blijk van waardering.”

Hamid en zijn zeven jaar oudere zus Naï¿½ma werden door hun ouders enorm gestimuleerd om op sociaal gebied de handen uit de mouwen te steken. Zijn zus richtte een huiswerkklasje op voor Marokkaanse meisjes, hï¿½j rolde als peuter als het ware het jongerenwerk al in. Organiseerde later activiteiten als de kindervakantieweek, een jumelage met de Duitse zusterstad Solingen.

Hij beseft dat een van de weinige allochtonen is die zijn gedecoreerd en dat hij nog heel jong is voor een lintje. ,,Ik schijn de jongste te zijn dit jaar. Dus ik heb nog wat goed te maken. Ik heb het druk met heel veel andere dingen, maar dit soort werk zal ik tot in lengte van dagen blijven doen.”

Het begon eind jaren 70 in de huiskamer van een buurtgenote. ,,Ik deed eerst mee met allerlei activiteiten, zoals figuurzagen, liedjes zingen en tekenen. Dat is enorm uitgegroeid, daar heb ik vanaf mijn 14de met een vriend het jongerenwerk opgezet, . Het project heette Roxanne, genoemd naar het nummer van The Police. Disco en voetbaltoernooien, dat soort dingen.”

Op zijn lauweren rusten is er vandaag niet bij voor het kersverse lid in de orde van Oranje-Nassau. Hamid: ,,We moeten de Oranjeboulevard nog opbouwen. Die is morgen al. De hele boulevard voor het buurthuis wordt versierd, oranje gemaakt. Er komt een vrijmarkt, spelletjes voor kinderen. Ik mag wel zeggen dat het de grootste activiteit in Gouda is voor Koninginnedag. Daar komen 50.000 bezoekers op af. Dat is nogal wat.”

Niks op TV? Valt mee hoor. Een snufje Sixteen Horsepower-sfeer, vermengd met vreemde Twin Peaks-figuren (maar dan beter) en Jeroen Bosch-achtige taferelen en de eeuwige strijd tussen goed en kwaad (wie is de goede en wie is de kwade, ben of justin?) en je hebt het magisch heerlijk verschrikkelijke Carnivale.

Met onder andere: Nick Stahl (“In the Bedroom”, “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines”), Clancy Brown (“The Shawshank Redemption”), Michael J. Anderson (“Twin Peaks”) als Samson, Adrienne Barbeau (“Escape from New York”) als Ruthie, Patrick Bauchau (“The Cell”) als Lodz, Debra Christofferson (“Seraglio”) als Lila en Tim DeKay (“Swordfish”)

De strijd tussen goed en kwaad gaat om het verschil tussen ‘normaal’ en ‘de ander’ en gaat gepaard met goede en slechte bedoelingen en goede en slechte handelingen. Het gaat daarbij langzaam maar zeker niet meer om een afwijkend uiterlijk, maar om het karakter van mensen. Niks nieuws natuurlijk en uiteindelijk bevestigt Carnivale ook niets minder dan dat het afwijkende (de ander) slecht is en het normale goed. Of niet? De combinatie goed en kwaad, goede en slechte intenties en goede en slechte handelingen, kan pijnlijke en vreemde kruisingen opleveren. Zo vreemd dat het einde (ik heb de hele serie al eerder op de onvolprezen VRT gezien), wellicht zelfs als pijnlijk kan worden ervaren. Maar goed misschien moeten we er ook niet teveel achter zoeken en gewoon genieten van deze twaalfdelige serie met schitterende plaatjes, soms grappige dialogen en wonderbaarlijke freaks en even wonderbaarlijke gewone mensen. “I know my way from here”: vanaf zondag 1 mei, ca. 22.35 uur, Nederland 3 bij de VPRO.
