Egypt film tackles thorny issues of sex, hypocrisy – Boston.com
A young man on the back of a Cairo bus kisses and gropes the woman next to him as he peels off her Islamic headscarf.
The scene from an independent film about sex and double standards in Egypt shows little nudity but provokes gasps of surprise from an audience in this largely conservative country.
Director Ahmed Khaled’s 14-minute film, the Fifth Pound, follows the weekly bus journey of a young man and woman who dodge the suspicious glances of other passengers and exploit the unused back seats to indulge in physical intimacy.

BBC – Religion & Ethics – The Hajj
For Muslims, the Hajj is the fifth and final pillar of Islam. It is the journey that every sane adult Muslim must undertake at least once in their lives if they can afford it and are physically able.

The BBC has, as always, an impressing and interesting page on the Hajj. With accounts about the history but also about people’s personal experiences.

Guardian Unlimited Travel | News | Hotel collapse in Mecca leaves at least 18 pilgrims dead
Tragedy struck the annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca yesterday when a building collapsed just a few yards from the Grand Mosque, killing at least 18 people and injuring dozens more.
Rescue workers, using cranes and bare hands, sifted through the remains of the building, which had a grocery store and restaurant on the ground floor and several floors above which were being used as a hostel for pilgrims.
It was unclear how many people had been inside at the time and a statement from the Saudi interior ministry said the eventual death toll could reach 20, though other reports put the figure much higher.
The victims were said to include Arabs from Egypt, Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates, together with Indonesians.
Latest news is that there seems to be one Dutch (not clear which ethnicity) among the victims: 65-year old Maimoun Kischouhi. He did not stay in that hotel but in a hotel nearby and got killed when he passed the collapsing hotel.

Vrijdag 20 januari 2006

Categories: Deep in the woods....
Damn, I forgot to post a new year’s resolution here. I did not have a Christian message with Christmas and now not even a spiritual message for 2006. I haven’t got one for several years now. The last new year’s resolution I had (quit smoking) I decide to break five minutes before 1 January 1997.
I know I do not stand out positively among all those blogs who do have some good wish or resolution for 2006. Not to mention all these new year’s speeches of mayors, ministers and all kinds of other officials.
I don’t mean to be nasty to you, my reader, but I just don’t have anything to wish except have a nice life. Other people are more interesting probably and therefore have interesting wishes and resolutions. Almost just as good as Richard Edward Penisface (as he was previously known) who two years ago decided to change his name. Others just decide to try to get through the year again or just doing stuff and things.
And since this New Year’s Resolution blog entry is going nowhere, I will stop
here.
