Gegoochel met cijfers

Het is altijd interessant om te zien hoe mensen met bepaalde cijfers aan de haal gaan. Even vergetend dat cijfers op zich helemaal niks zeggen als je de sociale en de onderzoekscontext niet kent. Ik heb er al eerder over geschreven.

Natuurlijk waren er deze week ook onvermijdelijke statistieken op basis van onderzoek onder moslims over afvalligheid, in opdracht van Nova. En ja hoor maar liefst 6% van de moslims vindt dat zij (als individu) geweld mogen gebruiken tegen afvalligen. Een duidelijk cijfer toch?

Nou nee niet echt.

WASHINGTON – Early Tuesday morning, a South Carolina Web designer who works at home managed to scoop Al-Qaida by publicly unveiling its new video, a feat she has accomplished numerous times since 2002. Within hours, cable news stations were broadcasting images of Osama bin Laden commemorating the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, and crediting the 50-year-old woman, who uses the pseudonym Laura Mansfield.

Day to Day, September 12, 2007 · The Episcopal Church has suspended one of its priests, Ann Holmes Redding, for one year after her announcement this summer that she is both a Christian and a Muslim. A local Muslim leader’s speech to Redding’s church two years ago inspired her to begin attending Muslim prayer services while she was still serving her local diocese.
