Loose Change III – the '9-11' conspiracy

By now the new conspiracy theories concerning ‘9-11’ have hit the Netherlands as well. The Belgian TV has aired the documentary Loose Change in a very critical way. But of course, nothwithstanding all the evidence against some of their challenges to the offical ‘9-11’ version, the theories remain and the movie that can be downloaded everywhere is hit.

And if the accusation that Bin Laden is behind it all and that the hijackers were acting on his behalf, isn’t a conspiracy theorie that what is one? In fact Loose Change III is out and has already been aired on Aljazeera: Al-Qaeda video takes credit for 9-11

A new videotape aired on Aljazeera television has shown Osama bin Laden and senior Al-Qaeda members meeting with some of the men who carried out the September 11 attacks against the US in 2001.

The 90-minute video apparently shows Bin Laden, the leader of Al-Qaeda, taking part in the planning and preparation of the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people.

Well, hello there. It’s been a while. I think besides during my stay in Morocco a few years ago, there was never a ‘blog-less’ period that was so long. Holidays (indeed, that was my liminoid phase), writing research applications, writing two chapters of my Ph.D (yes!) and a lot of small things kept me away from here. One of the two men who approached me first, Inspector Harris, asked for my id card and boarding pass. I gave him my boarding pass and driver’s license. He said “people are feeling offended because of your t-shirt”. I looked at my t-shirt: I was wearing my shirt which states in both Arabic and English “we will not be silent”. You can take a look at it in this picture taken during our Jordan meetings with Iraqi MPs. I said “I am very sorry if I offended anyone, I didnt know that this t-shirt will be offensive”. He asked me if I had any other T-shirts to put on, and I told him that I had checked in all of my bags and I asked him “why do you want me to take off my t-shirt? Isn’t it my constitutional right to express myself in this way?” The second man in a greenish suit interfered and said “people here in the US don’t understand these things about constitutional rights”. So I answered him “I live in the US, and I understand it is my right to wear this t-shirt”.

Something strange

There is this funny video I found only recently seems to make clear why we, men, never should be allowed to come close to an iron (which is undoubtedly true of course 😉 ). Funny thing is though that the same video was emailed to me and the video there was called: muslim-of-the-week (moslim-van-de-week). Don’t know how people know if this guy is a Muslim or not and I don’t know what it means this name change (there was no comment in the email), but nevertheless I found it remarkable. Another thing that is remarkable; I do a lot of stupid things every day and luckily no cameras around, while this one is filmed in such a way (angle) that the effect would be clear. So it is probably fake. But still, it is funny, so here watch it yourself:

So, yes, that means that I’m back from going liminoid, but still without an answer to the most important question in the blogosphere: what’s the use of blogging? And for the people who have noticed that this blog wasn’t online the last few days, religionresearch.org (of which this blog is part of) had exceeded the bandwith limit. Mainly due to my blog but I don’t know why: a hundred and something visitors isn’t enough for that. So is anyone stealing my bandwith?

C L O S E R – Terroristen en/of Vrijheidsstrijders

Tsja, ‘terroristen’ gelijkstellen met onze verzetshelden ligt natuurlijk gevoelig en moet je dus ook maar niet doen; enige zelfcensuur is wel op zijn plaats (en je wil immers ook niet de politiek incorrecte kerk achter je aan). Maar even zonder gekheid, laten we vooral niet doen of de term terreur (en varianten daarvan) zo neutraal zijn. Jan Blommaert van de Universiteit Gent weet daar het volgende over te zeggen:

Daders van terroristische aanslagen worden steevast bekleed met kwaliteiten als misdadig, fanatiek, volkomen respectloos, irrationeel. Wanneer we het hebben over terroristen ontkennen we elke legitieme politieke drijfveer, evenals elke vorm van eerbied voor afspraken in verband met gewapende strijd. Terroristen houden zich per definitie niet aan wetten en evenmin aan internationale akkoorden inzake het gebruik van bepaalde wapens, rechten van de slachtoffers, mensenrechten en zo meer. In de wereld van de internationale verhoudingen zijn zij de absolute schoften. Men hoeft dan ook de oorlogsregels niet te respecteren wanneer men het men hen aan de stok heeft: standrechterlijk executeren, bases over de grens bombarderen, leiders laten vermoorden: het is allemaal geoorloofd als het om terroristen gaat. Terroristen plaatsen zich buiten de rechtsorde, en men mag dan ook precies dezelfde overtredingen begaan als diegene die men hen verwijt om ze te onderdrukken. Terrorisme wordt in de regel gecounterd met terrorisme.

Het is dan ook geen mirakel dat de term nadrukkelijk wordt opgezocht door regimes die geconfronteerd worden met langdurig verzet vanwege georganiseerde bewegingen. Het Apartheidsregime bestempelde Nelson Mandela en zijn ANC systematisch als terroristen. De Israeli doen hetzelfde met de Palestijnse weerstand; de Russen met de Tsjetsjeense rebellen. In al die gevallen was het toekennen van die term voldoende om alle mogelijke vormen van terreur tegenover die ‘terroristen’ goed te keuren en zelfs te beschouwen als een noodzaak om recht, orde, vrijheid en democratie te laten zegevieren. De term wordt in de regel gecontesteerd, en dat is maar goed ook. Het is immers een term die uiterst belangrijke actiepatronen goedkeurt, meteen een moreel kader toekent aan de strijd, en het recht en het legitieme doel van de strijd meteen legt bij diegene die terroristen bestrijdt. Het is nooit een neutrale kwalificatie, het is een door-en-door politiek wapen. Het belangrijkste effect van het wapen is dat men de intenties, doelen en principes van de ‘terroristen’ meteen uit alle mogelijke analyses uitschakelt. Wanneer een groep als terroristisch is geïdentificeerd dan worden de discours en motieven van die groep meteen waardeloos en kunnen ze nooit in redelijkheid afgewogen worden tegenover die van wie hen bestrijdt. Het recht, de grote waarden en de nobele doelen zijn altijd die van de antiterroristen.

Kortom, het punt is dat er een politiek verhaal bestaat dat de daden van de tegenpartij motiveert en legitimeert. Een politiek verhaal, en dus niet zomaar een irrationeel en fanatiek-misdadig verhaal. Een verhaal dat deze aanslag kadert als een deel van een oorlog met als inzet grote kwesties die te maken hebben met de wereldverhoudingen, met macht en machteloosheid. Een politiek verhaal waarin wij niet vanzelfsprekend democratieën zijn, noch bewakers van de vrijheid en de vrede in de wereld, maar aanstichters van allerhande conflicten, uiterst brutale en vaak arrogante tegenspelers in onderhandelingen, krenterige en veeleisende kredietverstrekkers. Een verhaal, kortom, waarin wij de slechten zijn. En nogmaals, is dit verhaal slechter dan dat waarin wij per definitie de goeden zijn?

Dat plaatst ook de stellingen van Aouragh en Benzakour aan de ene kant en die van bijvoorbeeld Leon de Winter aan de andere kant in een wat andere daglicht. Het gaat dus niet alleen om Israël’s verzetsstrijders die het recht op zelfverdediging uitoefenen (zoals ieder land dat heeft toch?) of Hezbollah’s strijders (of martelaren) die vechten tegen de onderdrukking en bezetting door Israëliers (Israël heeft Libanon immers nooit helemaal verlaten, zoals we allemaal weten toch?), maar ook om de vraag welke belangen partijen nastreven en waarom de één de ander karakteriseert als terrorist. Dit is moeilijk los te zien waarschijnlijk van de andere conflicten in het Midden-Oosten en de rol van de VS, Syrië en Iran. (more…)

AMSTERDAM – De maatregelen van de regering om terrorisme te bestrijden werken radicalisering in de hand. Zowel wetenschappers als familieleden en vrienden van terreurverdachten zeggen dat het harde beleid contraproductief is. Ook in inlichtingenkringen groeit de zorg over de negatieve effecten van het huidige contraterrorismebeleid. Dit blijkt uit onderzoek van de Volkskrant.

Beatrice de Graaf, die de effecten van contraterrorisme onderzoekt, ziet vooralsnog ‘geen positieve resultaten’. Zij vergelijkt de maatregelen tegen terrorisme in Nederland, Duitsland, de Verenigde Staten en Italië in de jaren zeventig met die van nu. ‘In Nederland is het beleid 180 graden gekanteld, zegt De Graaf, die is verbonden aan de afdeling internationale geschiedenis van de Universiteit Utrecht.In het Hofstadnetwerk, en breder in orthodox-islamitische kring, doen talloze verhalen de ronde over ‘moedwillige vernedering van moslims’ door de politie. Slaapkamers van moslima’s worden binnengevallen zonder dat de vrouwen de tijd krijgen zich fatsoenlijk te bedekken. ‘Ik had wel naakt kunnen zijn. Wat respectloos’, fulmineert de zus van een verdachte in de zogenoemde Piranhazaak.

In deze zaak staat een groep verdachten rond Samir A. terecht wegens deelname aan een terroristische organisatie, het voorbereiden van aanslagen op politici en het AIVD-kantoor en werving voor de jihad. Bij een huiszoeking in Den Haag, eveneens in het kader van de Piranhazaak, kreeg een jongetje van anderhalf jaar glassplinters over zich heen.

Fourteen Islamic groups have formed a coalition to fight extremists, amid continuing anger at Tony Blair’s demand for their community to do more to combat radicalism. The groups, which include the Muslim Parliament and the Association of British Muslims, aim to raise awareness of extremism and speak out against “extremist ideologies and related propaganda”.

Forum members hope to commission research into why people are attracted to extremist ideologies and “to speak up for democratic values, and the principles of tolerance, justice and citizenship while maintaining our identity as British Muslims”.

The forum said: “We are aware that some from the Muslim community may be uneasy about the creation of a new body, arguing that Islam is not to blame for extremism and that Muslims as a whole cannot be held responsible for acts of terror committed in the name of their religion.

“We acknowledge this may be true, but we emphasise that Muslims must accept that there are extremists and terrorists who justify themselves by reference to Islam and this places a particular responsibility on Muslim citizens to expose these false claims and to refute such false justifications for acts that are clearly against Islam.”

Muhammad Abdul Bari, secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain, attacked Mr Blair for suggesting Muslims were not doing enough to combat extremism. He said: “Blaming a community, especially those who have been working for the last five years to bringing sanity in the community, bringing peace and harmony in the community. This blaming is not helpful to us.”

Islamic leaders across Birmingham have issued a joint message against terrorism in a bid to tackle mistrust of Muslims in the UK.

Leaders of the 150 mosques in the city have backed the statement, which comes in response to the police raid in London’s Forest Gate this month.

The religious edict makes clear the killing of innocent victims is against the principles of Islam.

It has been welcomed by the chief constable of the West Midlands.

The message is thought to be the first joint statement made by Muslim scholars in the UK against terrorism.

Activities regulated

It states: “That killing of innocent civilians is absolutely forbidden in Islam and anyone who contemplates or commits any such act, does so against the teachings of Islam.”

The statement adds action has been taken to regulate the activities of every mosque to ensure worshippers are given a message of “calmness and civic responsibility”.

It said the action of the UK Government in Iraq had caused anger in the Muslim community but there is a “resolve to guide the Muslim response in accordance with good citizenship”.

Dr Muhammad Naseem, chairman of the Birmingham Central Mosque, said: “There is a perception that Muslims are a source of terrorism.

“Although individuals have made statements against terrorism people still say Muslims aren’t denouncing terrorism.”

‘Positive announcement’

Terrorism is against the teachings of Islam, Dr Naseem explained, saying he was making the leaders’ position clear.

“We hope this will improve the understanding between religious communities in the city,” he added.

West Midlands chief constable Paul Scott-Lee said: “I am delighted by this positive announcement from our local mosques and fully support what is an important statement for all our communities.”

It is planned that similar anti-violence messages from Muslim leaders across other UK cities will be issued as part of the initiative.

C L O S E R – The Miami Terrorists…

Several people in Miami have been arrested for alledgedly trying to attack Sears Tower. Quickly described as ‘muslims‘

Well, we’re told these seven arrests — most of them in Miami, one in Atlanta, people described as radical Muslims, a religious sect that identified with al Qaeda, although officials have said — one senior official told us they were not related to al Qaeda. And one, we’re told, had taken an oath to al Qaeda, but we don’t know exactly that that means. It might have been something quite informal. I suspect we’ll learn a little more about that today.

We have to be a little more carefull though, because the people arrested seem to belong to a called that isn’t Islamic, but more a syncretistic sect:

Batiste and his followers swore an oath of allegiance to Al-Qaeda and requested help from an undercover agent to buy weapons, explosives and uniforms, according to the indictment. He sought $50,000 to fund his mission and boasted that his attacks would be “as good or greater than 9/11”.

Batiste’s targets were said to have included the Miami FBI building as well as the Sears Tower, America’s tallest building. He was secretly recorded and filmed by the FBI, which infiltrated the group after a tip-off from a member of the public.

No weapons or explosives have been found at the windowless warehouse that Batiste called the “temple” in a rundown area of Miami.

Batiste grew up in Chicago and, as a young man, joined the Guardian Angels, a beret-wearing citizens’ crime prevention group. In 1994 he told his father, a former preacher, that he was “joining the Muslims” but his beliefs bear little relation to orthodox Islam.

A close friend said his teachings came from the Moorish Science Temple of America, an early 20th century religion founded by the Noble Drew Ali, a wandering African-American circus magician who claimed to have been raised by Cherokee Indians and to have learnt “high magic” in Egypt. Ali went on to style himself an “angel” and prophet of Allah.

I cannot speak of course for all Muslims in all European countries, in the case of the assassination of Van Gogh, Dutch Muslims rejected the murder outright, with one Muslim organization calling Van Gogh a martyr of the freedom of speech. Nevertheless, it seems necessary to talk about this topic, because in particular non-Muslims seem to do not have heard these comments. C L O S E R – Salafisme: het nieuwe buzz-word

Het lijkt erop dat we sinds de moord op Van Gogh over een nieuw buzz-woord beschikken en wel salafisme. Wanneer we spreken over radicalisering en terreurdreiging door moslims, spreken we tegenwoordig vooral over salafisten. Het gebruik van dit woord suggereert dat we weten wat ermee bedoeld wordt: een homogene groep die anti-westers, anti-integratie en gewelddadig is. Men zou verwachten dat de Voortgangsrapportage Terrorismebestrijding wat preciezer en zorgvuldig is. Als we terroristen willen bestrijden is het immers handig om duidelijk aan te geven wie dat wel zijn en wie niet. Helaas, ook hierin worden alle verschillende groepen onder één noemer gebracht. Salafi’s worden gelijkgesteld aan terroristen en radicalen. Het op één hoop gooien van alle groepen die zich salafi noemen is onterecht, eenzijdig en strategisch gezien bijzonder onverstandig. Waar gaat het eigenlijk om en waarom moet er verschil worden gemaakt?

De term salaf verwijst naar de ‘vrome voorgangers’. Dit zijn de eerste drie generaties moslims van wie wordt verondersteld dat zij de meest pure vorm van islam naleefden. Onder deze vrome voorgangers zouden de metgezellen van de profeet en hun volgelingen vallen. De term kan worden teruggevoerd worden naar de islamgeleerde Ibn Taymiyya die leefde in de 13e en 14e eeuw. Hij pleitte voor een terugkeer naar de salaf om het slechte functioneren van moslims tegen te gaan. Het hedendaagse salafisme wordt tegenwoordig vaak gelijkgesteld met het Saoedische Wahhabisme. Dit is een orthodoxe stroming binnen de Islam die vooral in Saoedi Arabië verspreid is. Een groot gedeelte van deze salafi’s is zeer gezagsgetrouw aan de Saoedische overheid, maar in de jaren zestig en zeventig is er een revolutionaire vorm ontstaan. De meest radicale variant hiervan zijn de jihadisten die in de jaren negentig hun opmars maakten tijdens de oorlog in Afghanistan. Veel meer nog dan de Koran is de Soenna (het voorbeeld van de profeet Mohammed) te zien als het centrale aspect van de salafi doctrine. Iedere stap buiten de Koran en de Soenna betekent dat men zich verwijdert van de gedachte over de tawheed, de eenheid van God, terwijl iedere handeling die in overeenstemming is met de Koran en de Soenna beschouwd kan worden als een daad van aanbidding. Dit betekent dat bepaalde culturele gebruiken, zoals een gedwongen huwelijk of de wijze waarop Marokkanen het huwelijk vieren, buiten de islam geplaatst worden. Eén van de centrale doelen van de salafi beweging is dan ook de deculturalisering van de islam: het scheiden van cultuur en religie. Dit betekent in de praktijk dat men zeer kritisch is ten opzichte van de religieuze praktijken van eerste generatie moslimmigranten en de bestaande moskeeën. Dit is een praktijk die goed aansluit bij wat jongeren in het algemeen doen; of ze nu wel of niet deel uitmaken van de salafi’s, of ze nu fundamentalistisch of liberaal zijn vrijwel allemaal maken ze onderscheid tussen religie en cultuur.

Het lijkt erop dat de opstellers van de voortgangsrapportage terrorisme bestrijding vooral naar de hierboven gemelde overeenkomsten in religieuze dogma’s heeft gekeken en niet is nagegaan hoe salafigroepen zelf omgaan met hun dogma’s. Hoe ze deze interpreteren en hoe ze deze toepassen in de dagelijkse praktijk. We kunnen namelijk globaal drie groepen onderscheiden. Allereerst de salafi dawa, ook wel a-politieke salafi genoemd. Dit zijn de salafi die van oorsprong zeer loyaal zijn aan de Saoedische autoriteiten en zich in Nederland verre houden van de politiek en fel gekant zijn tegen de gewelddadige jihad. De salafi dawa hebben onder andere recent een folder uitgebracht waarin zij uitleggen waarom zelfmoord niet is toegestaan in de islam. Deze folder is duidelijk gericht tegen het plegen van zelfmoordaanslagen.

De tweede groep is die van de meer politiek geëngageerde salafi’s. Zij hebben evenals de eerst genoemde groep de neiging om zich te isoleren van de maatschappij, maar zij maken op dit moment de inschatting dat de situatie van moslims in Nederland en daarbuiten zo precair is dat zij wel moeten opkomen voor moslims. Vandaar bijvoorbeeld de kritiek van imam Fawaz van de Haagse As Soennah moskee op Hirsi Ali en Wilders. Andere moskeeën die tot deze stroming gerekend kunnen worden zijn Fourqaan in Eindhoven en Tawheed in Amsterdam. Jongeren die zich tot deze stroming rekenen keuren de gewelddadige jihad niet altijd af (bijvoorbeeld Palestijnse kwestie, de oorlog in Irak en Afghanistan), maar deze organisaties proberen jongeren weg te houden van de gewelddadige jihad. Men is wel zeer kritisch op bepaalde aspecten van de Nederlandse samenleving zoals de positie van de vrouw en homoseksuelen. Voor beide groepen geldt overigens dat ze zich niet volledig isoleren van de maatschappij. Ze zijn ook gericht op dawa (missie of zending) om moslims en niet-moslims te overtuigen van hun boodschap. De derde groep wordt gevormd door de Jihadi’s en takfiri’s. Zij zien de situatie voor moslims als zo erbarmelijk, dat zij een gewapende strijd noodzakelijk achten en dit ook als één van de hoogste vormen van aanbidding zien.

Er zijn dus belangrijke verschillen onder salafi’s die niet zozeer samenhangen met de religieuze dogma’s, maar wel met de inschatting en interpretatie van de nationale en internationale context. De eerste twee genoemde groepen kennen opvattingen die omstreden zijn in de Nederlandse samenleving, maar dat wil nog niet zeggen dat ze hetzelfde denken als de jihadi’s. Hun inschatting van de politieke en maatschappelijke situatie is geheel verschillend en hun oplossingen voor de problemen eveneens. Dat de meer politiek geëngageerde salafi’s felle kritiek hebben op de uitzending van Nederlandse soldaten naar Afghanistan en dat deze groepen kritiek hebben op de, volgens hen, commerciële uitbuiting van Westerse vrouwen, maakt hen omstreden maar nog niet meteen anti-westers, radicaal of terroristisch. Ze kunnen ook gezien worden als een groep kritische en mondige burgers die vanuit hun religieuze bril het functioneren van de samenleving bekijken. Het generaliseren van alle salafi’s is dus onjuist en eenzijdig. Het is zelfs erg onverstandig. In de discussies tussen salafi’s op internet wordt over dit generaliseren wel gesteld dat Nederland zich niet richt op terroristen, maar op alle moslims die hun geloof praktiseren. De woede over de beschuldiging van terrorisme kan ertoe leiden dat de bereidheid afneemt om de overheid te helpen met het tegengaan van radicalisering. Dat lijkt mij een uitkomst die ook het NCTb niet zoekt.

De nationale coördinator terreurbestrijding Tjibbe Joustra waarschuwde eerder deze week voor dergelijke sentimenten, maar gaf geen concrete voorbeelden. Op het dreigement vanuit Iran wil hij niet te reageren. Honderd Iraanse gardeleden hebben eind mei een formulier ondertekend waarbij de gewapende strijd wordt aangekondigd tegen Amerikanen, joden en Britten.
Die lijst moet worden uitgebreid met Nederland, Italië en Frankrijk, zei woordvoerder Mohammad Ali Samadi tegen een Italiaans persbureau. ,,We weten dat Nederland een vervolg wil maken op de smakeloze film Submission van Theo van Gogh.” Samadi roept Iraanse strijders op Nederland te treffen als Submission 2 in roulatie gaat.

Ex-Kamerlid Ayaan Hirsi Ali werkt momenteel in stilte aan het vervolg op haar spraakmakende film. Terrorisme-deskundige Dick Leurdijk van instituut Clingendael noemt de dreiging ‘heel geloofwaardig’. ,,De club voert serieuze en herkenbare argumenten op en weet goed wat er speelt in de wereld.
Het lijken gelovige broeders die hun leven willen opgeven voor hun zaak.” Iran-deskundige Matthijs van den Bos van de Universiteit van Amsterdam vindt het vreemd dat zelfmoordenaars vooraf hun acties aankondigen ‘maar ik sluit natuurlijk niets uit’. ,,De garde is bewapend en heeft het radicale ideologische gedachtegoed. Maar ik zie de bedreiging meer als psychologische oorlogsvoering.” De AIVD wil geen commentaar geven.

Vrijdag 9 juni 2006 – De salafistische moskee aan de Nijverstraat in Tilburg verspreidt folders waarin zelfmoordaanslagen stellig worden verworpen. De folder wordt onder jongeren in heel Nederland verspreid. „Wij willen radicalisering onder jongeren voorkomen.“ Geef uw mening over deze kwestie

M. Mrabet, secretaris van de Islamitische stichting voor Cultuur en Welzijn is de initiatiefnemer van de folder. Volgens hem worstelen veel islamitische jongeren met de vraag of zelfmoordaanslagen zijn toegestaan volgens de islam. „Naar aanleiding van vragen van jonge bezoekers heb ik besloten de inzichten van negen grote geleerden op te schrijven. Veel jongeren halen hun kennis van internet, die is vaak gebaseerd op een verkeerde uitleg van de teksten.“ De folders zijn erg in trek, volgens de secretaris zijn er al honderden verspreid door heel Nederland.
De moskee in de Nijverstraat is in trek onder veel jongeren. De bijeenkomsten trekken vaak meer dan 200 jongeren tussen de 18 en 30 jaar. Met name de lezingen van de imam Bouchta zijn populair. Ook op internet worden zijn lezingen besproken. De moord op Theo van Gogh, terrorisme, optreden van Amerika. Het zijn zaken waar veelvuldig over wordt gediscussieerd in de moskee.
Goede moslim
Mrabet ziet het als zijn taak om de juiste kennis te verspreiden. „We willen ons geloof beschermen. Een goede moslim zoekt de waarheid. We doen zo beter werk dan de AIVD. We vinden dit ook onze verantwoordelijkheid in deze chaotische tijden. De AIVD scheert veel moslims over een kam.“
De Tilburgse moskee hangt het salafisme aan, een streng-islamitisch stroming die zuivere islam nastreeft. Het salafisme wordt door de AIVD herhaaldelijk aangewezen als een ’gevaarlijke stroming’. Ook in de vierde rapportage terrorismebestrijding die deze week verscheen.
Mrabet benadrukt dat er mensen zijn die salafisten zeggen te zijn en wel geweld prediken, maar die zijn volgens hem het spoor kwijt. De secretaris stelt dat zijn stichting zich niet afkeert van de Nederlandse samenleving. „We wonen hier. We willen geen mensen opjutten of aanzetten tot haat.“

US President George W Bush described the news as a severe blow to al-Qaeda and “justice” for Zarqawi.

British PM Tony Blair described it as “very good news”, but both leaders said Zarqawi’s death would not end violence.

How Zarqawi was found

The news came shortly before the Iraqi parliament approved the key posts of defence and interior ministers.

The two crucial roles had remained unfilled despite the formation of a coalition government last month.

Zarqawi’s death was an opportunity for the new government to “turn the tide”, President Bush said.

“The ideology of terror has lost one of its most visible and aggressive leaders,” he added.

Correspondents say it remains to be seen if one man’s death will bring a breakthrough in Iraq.

Zarqawi “safe house” about 8km (five miles) north of Baquba was struck at 1815 (1415 GMT) on Wednesday, officials said.

The strike was the “painstaking, deliberate result” of intelligence over “many weeks”, US military spokesman Major General William Caldwell said.

He showed a picture of the militant leader’s body and a videotape of the attack, in which he said American F-16 fighter jets dropped the two 500lb bombs on the site.

The body was moved to a secure site where Zarqawi’s identity was confirmed, the official said.

A Jordanian government spokesman said Jordanian agents had contributed to the operation against Zarqawi.

Mr Maliki said intelligence from Iraqi people had also helped to track down Zarqawi, who had a $25m (£13m) price on his head – the same bounty as that offered by the US for Osama Bin Laden.

A statement on the internet attributed to an umbrella group for jihadi organisations including al-Qaeda in Iraq has confirmed Zarqawi’s death, reports say.

Jordanian-born Zarqawi was said to have been in a meeting with associates at the time. Five other people were killed in the raid, including spiritual adviser Sheikh Abd-al-Rahman and an unidentified woman and child.

Within hours of the killings, troops launched 17 simultaneous raids around Baghdad, which yielded a “treasure trove” of intelligence, according to the US official.

‘Violent thug’

Zarqawi was not a global mastermind like al-Qaeda leader Bin Laden, says the BBC’s security correspondent, Frank Gardner.

Instead he was a bloodthirsty and violent thug, our correspondent says – who made enemies and several mistakes that might have contributed to his downfall.

These included ordering a triple suicide bombing against hotels in Amman, Jordan, last November, that killed 60 people, our correspondent says.

Zarqawi was accused of leading the rash of kidnappings and beheadings of foreign workers.

It has been suggested that he appeared personally on one video posted on the internet, cutting off the head of an American hostage.

A video released in April showed Zarqawi shooting an automatic rifle and berating the US for its “arrogance”. The video provided the most up-to-date picture of the fugitive.

Violence continued on Thursday as 13 people were killed and 28 injured in a bomb at a Baghdad market, while an evening car bombing killed five and injured at least 13, police said.

Mr Maliki said intelligence from Iraqi people had also helped to track down Zarqawi, who had a $25m (£13m) price on his head – the same bounty as that offered by the US for Osama Bin Laden.

A statement on the internet attributed to an umbrella group for jihadi organisations including al-Qaeda in Iraq has confirmed Zarqawi’s death, reports say.

Jordanian-born Zarqawi was said to have been in a meeting with associates at the time. Five other people were killed in the raid, including spiritual adviser Sheikh Abd-al-Rahman and an unidentified woman and child.

Within hours of the killings, troops launched 17 simultaneous raids around Baghdad, which yielded a “treasure trove” of intelligence, according to the US official.

‘Violent thug’

Zarqawi was not a global mastermind like al-Qaeda leader Bin Laden, says the BBC’s security correspondent, Frank Gardner.

Instead he was a bloodthirsty and violent thug, our correspondent says – who made enemies and several mistakes that might have contributed to his downfall.

These included ordering a triple suicide bombing against hotels in Amman, Jordan, last November, that killed 60 people, our correspondent says.

Zarqawi was accused of leading the rash of kidnappings and beheadings of foreign workers.

It has been suggested that he appeared personally on one video posted on the internet, cutting off the head of an American hostage.

A video released in April showed Zarqawi shooting an automatic rifle and berating the US for its “arrogance”. The video provided the most up-to-date picture of the fugitive.

Violence continued on Thursday as 13 people were killed and 28 injured in a bomb at a Baghdad market, while an evening car bombing killed five and injured at least 13, police said.

Why did four British citizens blow up themselves and 52 others on a Thursday morning in July 2005?

From what we’ve read over the past 10 months – the reams of analysis, commentary and speculation – you might think they did it as part of some Islamist conspiracy, or to register their opposition to the war in Iraq, or because they were evil and wished to topple British, even Western civilisation. In fact, as the UK government’s narrative on 7/7 now reveals, there is little hard evidence that they did it for any of those reasons. The truth appears to be that 7/7 was meaningless; it was a nihilistic attack carried out by four fairly ordinary blokes for no easily discernible aim or agenda. And tragically, those who died in it may as well have been killed by an earthquake or in a train crash. It is time to stop trying to read meaning into 7/7, and get over it.
