The African Study Center (ASC) has a beautiful website. Now they have added a subsection Islam in Sub-Saharan Africa

The Library, Documentation and Information Department of the African Studies Centre has compiled this web dossier on Islam in Sub-Saharan Africa to coincide with the conference on �Islam, Disengagement of the State, and Globalization in Sub-Saharan Africa� held at UNESCO in Paris on 12-13 May 2005. The conference was jointly organized by the African Studies Centre (ASC) in Leiden and the Centre d��tudes d�Afrique Noire (CEAN) in Bordeaux.
The dossier begins with background information about the conference and then provides a list of titles on Islam in Sub-Saharan Africa and publications by the conference participants. These sections are based on the ASC library’s collection and contain titles of books and articles published over the last two decades. Each title links directly to the corresponding record in the online catalogue that provides details about the title as well as abstracts of articles and edited works. The dossier concludes with a number of web resources on Islam in Africa.

The Bedir Islamic primary school in Uden was burnt to the ground in a blaze caused by a Molotov cocktail
on 9 November last year. An attempt had been made to burn a mosque in Uden three days earlier.

The attacks were preceded by the murder of filmmaker Theo van Gogh in Amsterdam by a suspected Islamic militant on 2 November. The killing sparked a series of retaliatory attacks against Muslims

KABUL, May 17 (Reuters) – Several hundred Afghan widows gathered on Tuesday to demand the immediate release of a kidnapped Italian aid worker who had been helping them and thousands of other impoverished widows support themselves.

Clementina Cantoni, 32, from Lombardy, who works for the CARE International aid agency, was kidnapped on Monday after the car in which she was travelling in Kabul was intercepted and blocked by gunmen in another car.

“She was a very kind woman. We ask the government of Afghanistan to take all possible steps for her immediate release,” said Shah Jan, speaking at a dusty aid distribution compound on the outskirts of Kabul.

Mak in het ‘Land van Ooit’

Op 27 november publiceerde Geert Mak ‘een kleine geschiedenis van november‘ over Nederland van en na Van Gogh. Een zeer interessant en lezenswaardig stuk vooral als je in ogenschouw neemt dat het zo snel na de moord is geschreven. Goed, er zaten wel wat missers in, en niet iedereen deelde zijn kritiek op de term ‘moslimterrorisme’, maar ik vond het een goed stuk. Juist ook vanwege de kritiek op de term ‘moslimterrorisme‘.

Mijn verbazing was dan ook groot toen zijn pamflet Gedoemd tot kwetsbaarheid verscheen. Ongekend veel fouten (met groot enthousiasme gezocht door velen en gevonden dus ook)en zeer boude vergelijking tussen Submission en ‘Der ewige Jude’. Dat Mak stelt dat het hier om een technische vergelijking gaat en hij beide films niet op het zelfde plan plaatst, ok daar ga ik in mee aangezien dat ook wel mijn indruk was bij het lezen van dat (overigens zeer kleine) deel. Probleem is natuurlijk dat hij daarmee de schijn wekt dat het een neutrale vergelijking is en dat is het niet. WOII en de nazi’s vormen een soort moreel ijkpunt, een brandpunt van alles wat slecht is en iedere vergelijking krijgt dat automatisch mee.

Nu is er dan eindelijk zijn reactie o p schrift en bij het programma Rondom Tien. Oordeel zelf maar:

Het succes van Marokkaanse meisjes

ISIM in Leiden verricht en stimuleert wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar sociale, politieke, culturele en intellectuele ontwikkelingen in hedendaagse moslimsamenlevingen en –gemeenschappen. Leen Sterckx studeerde ociologie aan de KU Leuven. Zij mag zich ook Europees Master in de Arbeidswetenschappen noemen na verdere opleiding aan de UC Louvain-la-Neuve en aan het Instituto Superior de Ciencias do Trabalho e da Empresa in Lissabon (1999). Haar interesses liggen vooral op het gebied van arbeid, sociaal beleid en etnische minderheden. Carolien Bouw organiseerde en beheerde netwerken en werkgroepen op onder meer het terrein van vrouwenstudies, gezinsonderzoek en huishoudtechnologie en organiseerde debatten over criminologische kwesties. Zij redigeerde verschillende bundels, waaronder, samen met Ruth Oldenziel, Schoon genoeg : huisvrouwen en huishoudtechnologie in Nederland 1898-1998 (Nijmegen : SUN, 1998). Daarnaast publiceerde ze artikelen over meisjes en misdaad. Daarnaast heeft ze, samen met anderen, onderzoek verricht naar het het succes van Marokkaanse meisjes en naar stadskinderen. Gezamenlijk hebben zij het onderzoek ‘Een ander succes’ geschreven, waarover de lezing ging. Het beeld bestaat dat Marokkaanse meisjes het beter doen in de Nederlandse samenleving dan hun broers en neven. Samen met het SCP onderzocht SISWO in hoeverre deze beeldvorming klopt met de werkelijkheid. In het onderwijs zijn de Marokkaanse meisjes hun achterstand op de jongens en andere groepen op spectaculaire wijze aan het inlopen. Maar in weerwil van het populaire beeld doen ze het nog steeds niet beter. Bovendien is hun succes op de arbeidsmarkt niet eenduidig. Hun arbeidsparticipatie neemt toe, maar zoals vele jonge vrouwen worstelen ook Marokkaanse meisjes met de combinatie van werken met die andere ambities: huwelijk en moederschap.

Voorzitter was ondergetekende en discussant was Marjo Buitelaar van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Marjo Buitelaar is antropologe en verbonden aan de vakgroep algemene godsdienstwetenschap van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Zij doet onderzoek naar hoogopgeleide Marokkaanse vrouwen van de tweede generatie. Zij schreef onder andere het boek Ramadan, sultan van alle maanden en recentelijk het voorwoord in de Nederlandse vertaling van het boek van Amina Wudud De Koran en de vrouw.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — (OfficialWire) — 05/01/05 — Because Sir Ridely Scott’s new epic “Kingdom of Heaven” was filmed against the backdrop of the Crusades, it is likely to stir up religious passions still associated with that centuries-long conflict. (“Kingdom” is scheduled to open in theaters nationwide May 6.)

Many Muslims were concerned about the possibility of religious or ethnic stereotyping when they first heard that yet another Hollywood movie would feature Arab-Muslim characters. That concern was not without valid precedent.

American Muslim representatives recently took part in a screening of “Kingdom.” They said the film is a “positive” depiction of Islamic culture during the Crusades. They also said that one of the film’s most striking messages, that Muslims and Christians can live together in peace, will provide an opportunity for increased interfaith dialogue.

In the film, the bad guys are not all Muslims and the Christians are not all angels. Perhaps “Kingdom of Heaven” will do for Muslims that Kevin Costner’s “Dances with Wolves” did for Native Americans, humanize a perceived “other.”

Unfortunately, Internet chat rooms and talk radio shows are already abuzz with the concerns of those who cannot fathom how Muslims can be portrayed as dignified, proud and humane people for whom the ends did not justify the means. Media reports indicated that some conservative Christian are “marshalling their forces” against the film, claiming it is “insulting and unfair.”

Een tijdlang heb ik rondgelopen met het voornemen hedendaags terrorisme te vergelijken met het anarchistisch terrorisme van het eind van de negentiende eeuw. Die moeite kan ik me echter besparen. Mijn Gentse collega Rik Coolsaet heeft over precies dit thema een boek geschreven, waarvan zojuist een bijgewerkte, Engelstalige, editie is verschenen, Al-Qaeda: The Myth. The Root Causes of International Terrorism And How To Tackle Them, (Academia Press, Gent).

Het huidige islamitisch terrorisme is niet te verklaren in termen van religie of armoede. Het is symptoom van een verkeerd gegroeide samenleving, waarin snelle en onbeheersbare veranderingen maken dat grote groepen mensen zich buitengesloten voelen. Dit geeft extremistische splintergroepen de kans zich op te werpen als kampioen van marginaal geworden groepen (en landen).
