Summary: Thinking of modern jihad as simply a cultural extension of Islam is a common, and unfortunate, mistake. Two new books by Gilles Kepel and Olivier Roy offer better historical and sociological explanations, but they are only a start.

Mahmood Mamdani is Herbert Lehman Professor of Government at Columbia University and the author of Good Muslim, Bad Muslim: America, the Cold War, and the Roots of Terror.

AMSTERDAM – “Hello, dear readers,” wrote the cheerful new contributor in the March 2002 issue of a local newsletter. He introduced himself as a volunteer staff member of a community center in a western suburb of Amsterdam dominated by working-class Moroccan immigrants.

Two and a half years later, Dutch police say, the same man gunned down Theo van Gogh on a street in Amsterdam, stood over the Dutch filmmaker’s body and calmly slit his throat with a black-handled butcher knife. The killer then impaled a five-page letter to the victim’s chest that pledged that Islam would “drive evil back to its dark hole using the sword.”

The Dutch security services are taking no chances because three weeks ago Theo Van Gogh, a prominent Dutch film-maker who had made a movie attacking Islam’s attitude to women, was murdered on the streets of Amsterdam. And this was not any old street killing. Mr Van Gogh was dragged from his bike, shot six times and his head was nearly sliced off by an Islamic radical, who then impaled a five-page letter attacking the enemies of Islam on the chest of his dying victim. Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Dutch politician of Somali Muslim origin who was repeatedly threatened in the letter, is also in hiding and, unlike Mr Wilders, has not re-appeared in parliament. Other prominent politicians and even some journalists now have permanent armed protection. �You’re nobody as a columnist unless you have an armed guard,� jokes one eminent Amsterdamer.

Ze zijn moslim, van Marokkaanse afkomst en zitten in de hoogste klassen van havo en vwo. Ze zijn net zo veelbelovend als ooit Mohammed B. en Samir A. Zeven scholieren over radicaliseren, sms’en in de moskee en het mixtaaltje dat ze spreken met hun ouders.

Pakistan bans Newsweek over Van Gogh article

AMSTERDAM � A court in Pakistan has banned the latest edition of US news magazine Newsweek because an article about murdered Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh was said to desecrate the Koran.

BBC reported that Islamic parties objected to the article ‘Clash of Civilisations’ because they said it was biased against Muslims. A judge in Islamabad ordered that all copies of the 22 November issue of the magazine in Pakistan be destroyed.

Open brief aan de wethouder van Amsterdam: Abou Taleb’, staat sinds zondagmiddag vier uur boven aan de prikborden van ‘MoslimsinNederland-deenigeechte’, ‘Moslimstudenten’ en ‘Nederlandse moslims’. Het zijn prikborden waar eerder al de brief aan Hirsi Ali van de moordenaar van Theo van Gogh met trots werd gepresenteerd. Nu wordt de Amsterdamse wethouder uitgemaakt voor ‘hardnekkige ongelovige’. ,,Geachte Zindiq, Het is uitermate verbolgend op de manier waarop u in Amsterdam uw functie uitoefend.” Zindiq is een woord voor ketter.

An ultra-radical Islamic ideology mixing zealot-like devotion and holy war creed is drawing more scrutiny in anti-terrorist probes from the Middle East to Europe � with increasing indications that its base on the fringes of Islamic extremism could be widening.

In existence since the 1960s, al-Takfir wa al-Hijra has offered intellectual inspiration to al-Qaida and other militant groups. But authorities now worry about followers becoming more aggressive with recruitment and retaliation against perceived foes of Islam, such as Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh.

ISLAMIC preachers in Germany have been told that they may be ordered to deliver their sermons in German rather than in Arabic in an attempt to halt racist diatribes.

The move reflects Berlin�s fears that a spark of ethnic and religious unrest could leap from the Netherlands to Germany, a country with more than three million Muslims.

Het woord krenking is een prachtig woord dat enorm lekker in de mond in ligt. Je voelt ook bijna de pijn die je veroorzaakt bij het ‘krenken’.
Sjoerd de Jong in NRC: Onze gevoeligheid voor collectieve krenkingen over etniciteit of godsdienst is afgenomen, zeker. Maar onze gevoeligheid voor pers��nlijke krenkingen lijkt alleen maar te zijn toegenomen. Geen groter affront dan wanneer iemand de `integriteit’ van je persoon of werk in twijfel trekt. Kom niet aan mij, want dan kom je aan het laatste taboe mijn bedoelingen.

Na de moord op Theo van Gogh was dat wel anders. Moslims in Nederland hebben een eigen voorhoede en zijn meer ge�ntegreerd dan menigeen denkt, vindt arabist Leemhuis.

Is dit nou de media vanwaar wij onze nieuws vandaan moeten halen, als dat zo is dan is dat diep en diep triest.
