Not if You're a Muslim

Double standards, something which we often attribute to Muslims is of course nothing new for non-Muslims as well. Several issues on double standards such as: America: Land of the Free? Not if You’re a Muslim, by Mary Shaw – Democratic Underground. In this article she shows how Muslims in the US are treated as second rate citizens, and considered to be a threat to national security. A reference to the Jim Crow law’s is made:

Curt Goering, Senior Deputy Executive Director of Amnesty International USA, summed it up well: “Racial profiling is to the 21st century what Jim Crow laws were to the last, turning entire groups of people into second-class citizens and denying them the rights to which we all are due.”

The reason for this article is probably the survey at Cornell University:

A recent Cornell University survey found that almost half of all Americans believe that the U.S. government should restrict the civil liberties of Muslim Americans. This bigoted, racist attitude is quite simply appalling. It essentially favors racial profiling; yet a recent report by Amnesty International presents strong evidence indicating that racial profiling does not work.

This is a survey used by Daniel Pipes one of the major anti-islam/anti radical islam prophets. According to Habib Sidiqui Pipes supports the concept of rounding up millions of Muslim Americans and interning them in concentration camps just as was done with the Japanese during WWII and he defends racial profiling.

To support his sinister proposal on internment of Muslims, Daniel cites a poll, conducted by sophomore students in the Department of Communication at Cornell University.[7] The report was released on Dec. 17, 2004. He writes, �For years, it has been my position that the threat of radical Islam implies an imperative to focus security measures on Muslims. � And so, I was encouraged by a just-released Cornell University opinion survey that finds nearly half the U.S. population agreeing with this proposition. Specifically, 44 percent of Americans believe that government authorities should direct special attention towards Muslims living in the United States, either by registering their whereabouts, profiling them, monitoring them, monitoring their mosques or infiltrating their organizations.�

Although Sidiqui has a nice analysis he falls into the same trap as a lot of people do with the following statement:

So, rather than shedding crocodile tears for Muslim Americans� image, Daniel and his ilk should examine at their own culpability and work towards improving the image of Bush and America around the world. That would be more productive and commendable. Otherwise, it won�t be too long that their honeymoon with Bush would be over. And who knows they might find themselves in the same spots visited by others like Julius Streicher, Hans Frank, Adolf Eichman, Rudolf Hess and Hermann Goering for crimes against humanity!

Now he is attacking the person and as so often not the person’s statement. Does this mean he agrees? His only proposal is that people should know more about Islam; a little bit naieve I think. This is the old contacthypothesis: if you have contact with people of other groups you are probably to like them more than if you don’t have contact. Ah, if things were just that simple…

Well hello piepel,

As you can see, this blog has changed somewhat. Thanks to Marten who has made a simple but elegant template for WordPress, this blog should be as it was before. Except for the lay-out of course. Some will find it less orientalistic and therefore better others will find it buhhh. But I like it. Even peter has started blogging again(!) so the virtual company is very good.

I have changed the name by the way to C L O S E R – Anthropology of Muslims in the Netherlands (a modest attempt). The other name was quite bombastic and I am not a islamic scholar but an anthropologist who tries to look closerinto the matter. Closer has several meanings in Dutch: dichter, nader(-en), intiem and well you can give your own interpretation.

The article succinctly summarizes the uses and abuses of deconstruction, but more importantly, gives us a glimpse into a man’s quest for understanding the Divine in his own terms, free from the indoctrination of religious as well as secular fanaticism and formulas.

Rappers face court for Hirsi Ali threats

The Boys from DHC faced court and the public prosecutor demanded a working order. I wrote an article about this diss trying to explain it in relation to the global hiphopculture and Dutch youth culture.
We can see this diss as an attempt of some young Moroccans who are born and raised in Holland to express their feelings and to participate in the integrationdebate. The analogy with American hiphop is the feeling of discrimination and oppression. It is expressed in a way that fits Dutch youth culture and the Dutch hiphopculture. We can say oh their they go again and ‘blame the system’ but you can also pay attention and see how deep the feelings of disrespect by dutch natives are with the boys. And be fair, is the way the integrationdebate is going in which young muslims have nothing to say anymore about their own religion, in which muslims can be called goatfuckers and their prophet a pedophile and where a politician wants to eat the headscarfs raw (is that a good english expression?), more constructive than this Hirsi Ali Diss?

Marc Mulholland writes for Crooked Timber (that’s why the trackback) but also has his own site: Daily Moiders. An interesting piece here from july 2004 about islamic reformation. On Crooked Timber the question is asked, after the ‘fuss’ about Qardawi, how do we think a islamic reformist looks like. Something like Calvijn? In Liberal Prejudice – Notes Towards a Polemic Mulholland talks about liberal islamophopia. “Liberals have a tendency to treat their own norms as self-evident and, as expression of ahistorical �rights�, not only universally applicable but necessary components of full human morality. Pre-liberal cultures are unacceptable unless reduced to fancy dress. Liberals in effect treat non-Liberal values as �false consciousness�, easily sloughed off by liberated humanity. In reality, cultural identities are not as easily shed as liberals like to think, and for the constituents of the group exposed to constant denigration, the caveats expressing regard for liberal or assimliable currents in the persecuted group are likely to be rejected as hypocrisy. Indeed, patronising homilies on the need to reform � liberals in the Christian tradition often unselfconsciously call for Reformation, as if the epoch that produced the Thirty Years War is owed universal respect � are more likely to reinforce the authority of archaic institutions as buttresses against cultural inundation. ”

Very interesting for several people in the Netherlands…and probably elsewhere…

Misschien niet het meest logische moment om verstandig te gaan doen, maar waarom eigenlijk niet.

Na aanvankelijk vermeld te hebben dat de dader een islamitisch uiterlijk had, bleek hij later toch een Arabisch uiterlijk te hebben. Wat is dat eigenlijk een islamitisch uiterlijk? Een baard, een djellabaa, een hoofddoek? Dan heeft Jahjah geen islamitisch uiterlijk�Ok hij heeft een Arabisch uiterlijk�dan kan hetzelfde gevraagd worden. Hij is een Nederlander, Marokkaan, man en Amsterdammer. Wat kiezen we nu als identiteit? Die bepaalt die man immers niet alleen zelf, dat doet de rest ook wel voor hem? Op sommige sites kiezen mensen duidelijk voor Marokkaan. De ��n om op te roepen tot een burgeroorlog (Graverdammer) en de ander (Marokko.nl) om hem te prijzen� Anderen zoals Cinner houden het hoofd meer koel. Ow ja hij kan natuurlijk ook nog moslim zijn�Hoe weten we dat? Hebben we zijn besneden piemel gezien? Hem zien genieten van de iftar of van het bidden? Of leggen we hem de identiteitsdefinitie op dat iedere Nederlander van Marokkaanse afkomst een moslim is? Of dat iedere buitenlander een moslim is? Dat komt voor sommigen onder ons (Graverdammer, NieuwRechts) goed uit; kunnen ze eindelijk hun frustraties op de moslims botvieren. Anderen, zo begreep ik bij RTL-Z en de NOS, zijn juist bevreesd en hopen dat het rustig blijft. Wat nu als de verdachte in Nederland geboren is en opgegroeid? Het is nogal naief om te veronderstellen dat hij niets van de Nederlandse samenleving heeft meegekregen. Wat zegt dit over de Nederlandse samenleving en pleit dit ervoor om, wanneer we het over identiteit hebben, in ieder geval het Nederlanderschap erin mee te nemen (dus Nederlandse Marokkaan of Nederlandse moslim)?

Tevens wordt er veelvuldig melding gemaakt van de aanslag op de vrijheid van meningsuiting�Wilders die dit suggereert, verscheidene weblogs. Maar hoe weten we wat het motief is? Waarom zou die niet gepleegd kunnen zijn door iemand die psychisch ziek is (zonder daarmee een excuus aan te voeren)? Of waarom zouden er niet nog andere factoren een rol kunnen spelen zoals een zakelijk of persoonlijk conflict tussen de verdachte (ja ook dat nog; de ge-arresteerde man is nog steeds alleen maar verdacht)? Of betekent het gegeven dat we kiezen voor een moslim- cq marokkaanse identiteit dat er w�l politieke/religieuze/culturele factoren een rol moeten spelen?

Wat we nu aan het doen zijn is een wereld creeeren waarin verschillende identiteiten tegenover elkaar staan en waarin verschillende, vooral negatieve, betekenissen aan die identiteiten worden toegekend.

De partituur van de menselijke beschaving; erg leuk artikel in de NRC van afgelopen zaterdag over Claude L�vi-Strauss. “L�vi-Strauss is een overlever. Over een kleine drie maanden wordt hij zesennegentig. Geboren in 1908 was hij drie jaar jonger dan Sartre en de jaargenoot van Simone de Beauvoir, met wie hij als aankomend filosofiedocent stage liep. Ook veel van de denkers die hen aflosten – Roland Barthes, Michel Foucault en de oudere Jacques Lacan – zijn inmiddels van het toneel verdwenen. Beide generaties probeerden hem, op diverse momenten, bij zich in te lijven en beide hield hij hardnekkig op afstand. De existentialisten waren hem te metafysisch en tezeer vervuld van het navelstarend menselijk subject. De populaire structuralisten waren hem te literair-impressionistisch en niet wetenschappelijk genoeg.”

Trouw, opvoeding & onderwijs – Eindexamens 2004

Dagblad Trouw heeft een erg leuke rubriek over de eindexamens van dit jaar. Ze volgen daarbij 8 leerlingen van de Cambium schoolgroep in Zaltbommel: Gisbert en Janne (havo), Laura en Margot (vwo), Kristof en Gerina, Ivo en Gregor (vmbo).

Waar het meestal wel reacties regent als het over de jeugd van tegenwoordig gaat, blijft het nu angstvallig stil op de Trouw-site. Wat is dit? Staan de eindexamens zo ver van ons af? Zijn we alleen geinteresseerd in de jeugd als ze overlast veroorzaken? Boeit de alledaagse leefwereld en de bijbehorende beslommeringen van de jeugd ons niet meer? Het lijkt wel alsof jeugd, jongeren en de bijbehorende subculturen alleen nog als overlastcategorieen gedefinieerd worden; een mooi beeld dat we projecteren op onze jongeren zeg. Of ben ik te pessimistisch?
