Expatica’s Dutch news in English: Seven held in anti-terror raids in the Netherlands
Seven held in anti-terror raids in the Netherlands. The operation was designed to prevent terror attacks. It was ordered by the national detective unit as part of an investigation into a terrorist organisation, a spokesperson for the office of the public prosecutor (OM) said.
The suspects were held in Almere, Amsterdam and The Hague. Six of the suspects are men, aged 18 to 30. The seventh is a 24-year-old woman. One of the men is 19-year-old Samir A., the OM spokesperson said.
Probably his wife Abida is held as well.
A. was cleared by a court earlier this year of charges he was plotting terrorist attacks on a nuclear power station and other key
installations in the Netherlands. He is considered the main suspect in the latest investigation.Reports received by the Dutch intelligence service AIVD suggested, the OM said, that A. was trying to obtain automatic weapons and explosives.
The national coordinator for countering terrorism has released a press statement as well.
Following the arrest of several individuals suspected of terrorist activities, additional security measures have been put into immediate effect at the recommendation of the National Coordinator for Counterterrorism (NCTb). Information from intelligence services has prompted these measures, which relate to surveillance and protection of specific objects and persons. Some measures will be visible to the public. For instance, the Binnenhof (the parliamentary and governmental complex in The Hague) will be under tighter surveillance. The headquarters of the General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) in Leidschendam, the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations will also be under tighter surveillance. It is not yet possible to say how long this level of surveillance will be in place. For security reasons, no further information about personal security measures can be provided.
There is no need to raise the general threat level associated with the national terrorist threat assessment. As reported earlier, the current threat level for the Netherlands is substantial, and that level remains unchanged. Nor is there any need to place any of the sectors participating in the Counterterrorism Alert System (Alerteringssysteem Terrorismebestrijding; Atb) on alert, or to raise either of the sectors already at a moderate alert level Dutch Railways (NS) and Amsterdams Schiphol Airport to a higher level.
At the press conference Dutch ministers Donner (Justice department) and Remkes (Interior) declared they are related to the so called ‘hofstadgroup’. A group that, according to them, has grown and become more autonomous (not really clear what they mean by that but probably that there are few or none international links) and abuse islam for their terrorist activities (a message clearly directed at Muslims and non-muslims in the Netherlands).
UPDATE:
Samir A. is considered the prime suspect. According to the Dutch intelligence and information service (AIVD) he was looking for explosives and automatic weapons and probably preparing an attack on politicians and a governmentbuilding (perhaps the AIVD office).

Twee kandidaten blijven over.

Picked up by several blogs (for example Gary Bunts) and news services, the item that Al Qaeda puts job ads on Internet – Arab paper
The first, to record this, I think was Asharq Alawsat Newspaper (English)
Al Qaeda Website Openly Hiring New Recruits
In a move mirroring the recruitment process at the Central Intelligence Agency, a website affiliated with al Qaeda has announced it was recruiting for a number of vacant posts, including compiling reports by militant groups in Iraq , written and audiovisual, assembling information from satellite television channels on extremist Islamic groups and their activities in Palestine , Iraq , and Chechnya . It was also seeking language specialists with excellent knowledge of Arabic and English, both oral and grammar.
Other vacant positions that al Qaeda hopes to fill are a video programmer and a researcher for news on Muslims worldwide.
The Global Islamic Media Front said its PR department would follow up the applications and communicate with candidates through private email messages.
Al Qaeda did not indicate the different ranks of the vacant positions. Instead, it said, Every Muslim should know that his life is not his own; it is the property of this violated nation for whom men have shed their blood. No other issue should take precedence over work for the Umma (Community of the faithful within Islam); it is an obligation for every Muslim.
According to the message posted by the Front, each applicant should turn to God for guidance and pray before submitting his applications.
Well they are right in comparing it with the CIA. So if you don’t want to join Uncle Osama, just go to Uncle Sam.

Together with my colleague from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Edien Bartels, I have done a research on forced marriages.
The focal point of this research paper is the question: What place do forced marriages
occupy in the process of choosing a spouse among Turks, Moroccans and Hindustani in the
Netherlands? This research paper focuses on a comparison between the three groups named.
The following research questions are posed:
1. What views are held with respect to marriage, the importance of marriage and how
it is brought about (especially the place given to freedom of choice, on the one hand,
and coercion, on the other, with respect who one is to marry)
2. What strategies do marriage partners use?
3. Within what societal context does the phenomenon of marriage fit?
4. How often does the process of choosing a partner go against the will of the partners?
5. What views do the groups involved have of the role of the government with respect
to forced marriages?
Forced marriages among Turks, Moroccans and Hindustanis is an issue but one that is not as clear cut as you might think. There are not that many examples anymore of parents forcing their daughter (or son!) into a marriages with someone they don’t want. There is considerable pressure however among parents and children to get married at some point in time. With family in for example Morocco this pressure can be to tough to resist for many people.
In the debate on social integration, the manner in which partners are chosen is seen as an
indicator of this integration. Force and freedom of choice are juxtaposed. Studies have
shown that force and freedom of choice in marriage actually represent the extremities of
a continuum with a large grey area in between. Arranged marriages can be placed in this
grey area.
In our research, parents seem to place great value on family relations and they see the
question of whether or not the families of potential partners suit one another as being
vitally important. In other words: they focus on the importance of familial relations and
mutual support. This concerns more than the situation in the Netherlands alone and can
involve the family living in Turkey and Morocco, respectively. The loyalties to, identification
with, and commitment to the family there and the mutual obligations that ensue
from this commitment mean that these can weigh more heavily than other aspects. In
addition, a marriage is still seen as a way in which to solve problems. The woman then
becomes the responsibility of her husband. And for the husband, it is the principal time
at which he demonstrates his sense of responsibility. Another view is the one concerning
the happiness of the children parents are viewed as the ones that know what is
best for their children.
With respect to children, there are two main views that can clash. On the one side there
is the ideal of freedom of choice (children determine for themselves as to what will make
them happy and what is best for them). On the other hand, they feel a sense of loyalty
to their parents. Sometimes there is also the view that the parents are only looking after
their best interests. Based on the first view, they could marry whom they choose, but
loyalty to their parents means that they will take their parents views into consideration
and usually ask for their parents consent. They would not usually present a candidate to
their parents that they think would likely be rejected by them.
Although parents are increasingly shifting their position and favouring the romantic
ideal and although young people have grown up with this ideal, there is still a gap between
the generations in this respect. The idea that this is due to a lack of social integration
or even to unsuccessful integration into Dutch society does not do justice to the
great turnaround that parents in particular have made and ignores the fact that loyalty
to the family and identification with ones own ethnic group cannot simply be ignored.
The speed at which these changes are taking place differs for the two generations. As a
result, parents and children are making different choices. In other words, parents and
young people are changing, but not in the same manner and at the same speed, which
means they see and interpret the world differently and therefore can act differently. This
causes problems with respect to the choice of a marriage partner within and outside the
group itself. It also explains why parents do not always recognise and acknowledge the
pressure that they put on their children as coercion or force. At the same time, it is also
easy to see why young people sometimes consider any interference by their parents as
a form of coercion. The problem of forced marriages, for these groups, is therefore not
so much the result of a lack of integration or of unsuccessful integration. It is rather the
result of a process of strong integration that the two generations are experiencing at different
speeds.

Phone Reminds Muslims of Prayer Time according to AP:
For Muslims, it’s a high-tech call to prayer. A new cellular telephone generates five automated reminders a day at prayer time, points Muslims in the direction of Mecca and contains a copy of the Islamic holy book, the Quran, in both Arabic and English.
Already available in the Middle East and Asia, Ilkone – Arabic for universe – recently went on sale in the Netherlands for its European debut.
It will be followed by launches in France, Germany, Italy, Denmark, Belgium and Bosnia in coming months, said Peter Suyk, the managing director of Lebara BV, the phone’s European distributor.
Some Muslims were skeptical.
“I wouldn’t buy one,” said 15-year-old Mohammed Bouyeri, sitting outside Rotterdam’s largest mosque, the Mevlana. “It might be useful for someone at home or traveling, but not at the mosque. Everyone here already knows what time prayers are.”
Sorry, can’t help it but is the boys name really Mohammed Bouyeri or is he joking the reporter? Well it could be his name of course, there will be more people with name…
Don’t know what I mean? Read the article below.

US President Bush ‘Discusses War on Terror at National Endowment for Democracy’
In a speech delivered at The National Endowment for Democracy (an organisation for the support of freedom around the world) he discusses the ‘evil of islamic radicalism’ (and the strategies of countering this ‘evil’) and refers to (among other things) at the killing of Van Gogh by Mohammed B.:
The murderous ideology of the Islamic radicals is the great challenge of our new century. Yet, in many ways, this fight resembles the struggle against communism in the last century. Like the ideology of communism, Islamic radicalism is elitist, led by a self-appointed vanguard that presumes to speak for the Muslim masses. Bin Laden says his own role is to tell Muslims, quote, “what is good for them and what is not.” And what this man who grew up in wealth and privilege considers good for poor Muslims is that they become killers and suicide bombers. He assures them that his — that this is the road to paradise — though he never offers to go along for the ride.
Like the ideology of communism, our new enemy teaches that innocent individuals can be sacrificed to serve a political vision. And this explains their cold-blooded contempt for human life. We’ve seen it in the murders of Daniel Pearl, Nicholas Berg, and Margaret Hassan, and many others. In a courtroom in the Netherlands, the killer of Theo Van Gogh turned to the victim’s grieving mother and said, “I do not feel your pain — because I believe you are an infidel.” And in spite of this veneer of religious rhetoric, most of the victims claimed by the militants are fellow Muslims.
When 25 Iraqi children are killed in a bombing, or Iraqi teachers are executed at their school, or hospital workers are killed caring for the wounded, this is murder, pure and simple — the total rejection of justice and honor and morality and religion. These militants are not just the enemies of America, or the enemies of Iraq, they are the enemies of Islam and the enemies of humanity. (Applause.) We have seen this kind of shameless cruelty before, in the heartless zealotry that led to the gulags, and the Cultural Revolution, and the killing fields.
(my italics)
Bush, and I would like to state that here, did not meant (in this speech) that islam is evil:
Some call this evil Islamic radicalism; others, militant Jihadism; still others, Islamo-fascism. Whatever it’s called, this ideology is very different from the religion of Islam. This form of radicalism exploits Islam to serve a violent, political vision: the establishment, by terrorism and subversion and insurgency, of a totalitarian empire that denies all political and religious freedom. These extremists distort the idea of jihad into a call for terrorist murder against Christians and Jews and Hindus — and also against Muslims from other traditions, who they regard as heretics.
[…]
As we do our part to confront radicalism, we know that the most vital work will be done within the Islamic world, itself. And this work has begun. Many Muslim scholars have already publicly condemned terrorism, often citing Chapter 5, Verse 32 of the Koran, which states that killing an innocent human being is like killing all humanity, and saving the life of one person is like saving all of humanity. After the attacks in London on July the 7th, an imam in the United Arab Emirates declared, “Whoever does such a thing is not a Muslim, nor a religious person.” The time has come for all responsible Islamic leaders to join in denouncing an ideology that exploits Islam for political ends, and defiles a noble faith. Many people of the Muslim faith are proving their commitment at great personal risk. Everywhere we have engaged the fight against extremism, Muslim allies have stood up and joined the fight, becoming partners in a vital cause. Afghan troops are in combat against Taliban remnants. Iraqi soldiers are sacrificing to defeat al Qaeda in their own country. These brave citizens know the stakes — the survival of their own liberty, the future of their own region, the justice and humanity of their own tradition — and that United States of America is proud to stand beside them. (Applause.)
So now you can applaud 😉

IslamOnline.net has ‘The Month of Ramadan’ section with several articles about Dutch Muslims.
Dutch Muslims Launch Ramadan Web Site
The Ramadan site features information about the dawn-to-dusk fasting, reports on buzzing activities by mosques and Islamic organizations during the month as well as a review of Islam in the Dutch press.
The aim of the Web site, according to its founders, is to “familiarize non-Muslims in The Netherlands with this holy month that carries a special significance.”
The founders, according to information posted in their Web site, were motivated by the fact that most non-Muslims in the European country know so little about the fasting month and have, therefore, some misconceptions about Ramadan and Islam in general.
Another main goal of the Web site is to “post the members of the [Muslim] community on the religious activities supervised by Islamic organizations in the main Dutch cities.”
The site founders, all Dutch citizens mostly hailing from Turkey and north African countries, said all information available on their Web site is free of charge.
The Web site is endorsed by a number of well-known Dutch sites including www.lokum.nl, which reports on the affairs of the Turkish community, www.islam.pagina.nl, which features information about Islam, and www.maghreb.nl, focusing on the news of citizens from north African countries.
That was an article of last year, but there is also some recent news of course:
Dutch Muslims Seek Consensus on Ramadan Start
To spare the Muslim minority the usual disagreement on the beginning of the holy fasting month of Ramadan, five Dutch Muslim organizations agreed to start the fasting on Wednesday, October 5, according to astrological calculations.
In a statement issued Wednesday, September 21, the Imams Society, Moroccan Mosques Union in Central Netherlands, Moroccan Mosques Union in Amsterdam, Islamic Council in Lunenburg and the Federation of Islamic Organizations in the Netherlands said the new moon would not be sighted on Monday, October 3, and consequently the first day of Ramadan would be Wednesday.
Not a very big success, because Ramadan has begun today, October 4. But that doesn’t really matter. Several sites (e.g. Ramadanfestival) are booming sites nowadays.
With the start of the holy fasting month of Ramadan in the Netherlands, Muslim Web sites are attracting a large number of Muslims curious to know how to make their fast flawless and non-Muslims as well who want to learn more about the Muslim faith.
Is my fast valid if I do not pray? Is it a must to fast if I am sick? Do sex and smoking invalidate fast? are some of a plethora of questions that pour into Muslim Web sites’ Ask the Scholar or Fatwa sections.
“We are reaching out to Muslims interested in learning more about their religion especially during Ramadan,” Sheikh Galal Amer, the managing director of the Web site of the Imams Assembly in the Netherlands, told
He said the Web site also serves as a teaching tool for the third generation as they find information both in their native Dutch and Arabic, the language of the Noble Qur’an.
“The Web site also provides Dutch Muslims with a much-needed directory of mosques in the Netherlands and a list of their activities during the holy month,” Amer added.
To spare the Muslim minority the usual disagreement on the beginning of Ramadan, five Dutch Muslim organizations have agreed to start fasting Wednesday, October 5, according to astronomical calculations.
There are one million Muslims in the Netherlands, mostly hailing from Turkish and Moroccan origin.
Most Visited
Ramadan Festival is considered to be the most visited Muslim Web site in the Netherlands.
The Dutch-Arabic Web site is supervised by a number of Muslim organizations in cooperation with Amsterdam municipality.
The founders, according to information posted on their Web site, were motivated by the fact that most non-Muslims in the European country knew little about Ramadan and Islam in general.
The Web site receives a torrent of questions almost on a daily basis from non-Muslims like can Muslims drink and smoke during fasting hours? Can Muslims fast some of the specific time?
It further undertook a poll that showed that 78 percent of Muslims in the Netherlands observe Ramadan while 22 percent do not fast.
Mosques and Islamic centers across the country have also set up a special Ramadan page on their Web sites and launched a series of live dialogues that host prominent scholars to answer questions on the dawn-to-dusk fasting month.
The country’s Muslim channel NMO will also air the Tarawih Prayer prayers daily and cover Muslim activities and forums after iftar (a meal that breaks the fast).

I don’t know if the Ramadanfestival is the most visited one, could be, but it is certainly worthwile to take a look.

ISIM is a partner in organizing one of the events during the Ramadanfestival: Islam, Gender, and Authority.
