Rassenrellen!?

Verschillende media maakten afgelopen week van de rellen in Amsterdam naar aanleiding van de dood van een Marokkaanse jongen. Elsevier:

Vorige week woensdagnacht werd bij een opgefokte verkeersruzie in die buurt een Marokkaanse man neergestoken; hoofdverdachte is een inmiddels aangehouden 24-jarige Antilliaan. Meteen na de steekpartij gingen grote groepen Marokkaanse jongeren op klopjacht in de wijk, abusievelijk vooral bij Surinamers. Zo werden meermalen de ruiten ingegooid bij een café dat eigendom is van een Surinamer. De rellen beheersten dagenlang de Indische buurt. Zelfs bij een ‘bewonersbijeenkomst’ vrijdagavond liepen de emoties hoog op.

Elsevier noemt het ‘inter-etnische’ rellen, anderen zoals Elma Drayer in Trouw noemt het rassenrellen:

Groepje met zekere etnische kenmerken vermoordt een Amsterdammer van Marokkaanse afkomst. Daarop koelen zijn broeders hun woede op mensen met soortgelijke etnische kenmerken, hoewel die er geen donder mee te maken hebben. Dat is méér dan ’ruzie’. Dat is een rassenrel.

Is dat wel zo? Wat maakt een rel tot een rassenrel? Of wat maakt een verkeersruzie tot een rassenrel?

Islamitische wetgeving: Ethisch reveil, McCarthyisme en staatsvorming

Gisteren organiseerden de MOI en ELSA Nijmegen een debat met als titel: Islamitische wetgeving, democratie en mensenrechten naar aanleiding van de WRR rapporten over Shari’a. In dit rapport onderzoekt de WRR hoe het islamitische activisme zich sinds de jaren zeventig in de moslimwereld heeft ontwikkeld. De nadruk ligt op intellectuele ontwikkelingen, de veranderende opstelling van islamitische politieke bewegingen en de betekenis van de sharia (islamitisch recht) voor het recht van moslimlanden. De meest opvallende conclusie van het rapport is het advies van de WRR aan de Nederlandse regering om contacten te onderhouden met islamitische politieke bewegingen, zoals de Hamas.

Sprekers waren: Prof. dr. Anne-Marie Van den Bossche: Radboud Universiteit, gespecialiseerd in het Europees gemeenschapsrecht die heel keurig de opening verzorgde van deze toch wel bijzondere activiteit. Het is de eerste activiteit nieuwe stijl van de MOI die bezig is om haar programma te veranderen en aan te passen. Het was tevens de eerste activiteit van de studenten van Elsa Nijmegen.

De lezingen werden gegeven door

* Maurits Berger: Senior Fellow Instituut Clingendael. Auteur van: Klassieke sharia en vernieuwing, WRR 2006.
* Jan Michiel Otto: Hoogleraar Recht en Bestuur in Ontwikkelingslanden, Directeur Van Vollenhoven Instituut van de Universiteit Leiden. Auteur van: Sharia en nationaal recht. Rechtssystemen in moslimlanden tussen traditie, politiek en rechtsstaat, WRR 2006.

Dick Douwes van de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam fungeerde als discussant.

Ondergetekende was voorzitter en dit verslagje is op persoonlijke titel geschreven.

Bamboozled in the politics of race

A particularly typical example of liberal guilt “we-feel-sorry-for-you” racism. You see they would have liked to to put a black model on the front but she just would not have sold as many copies. So they used a druggie.

It’s about the latest issue of The Independent (in issue intended to raise money for the anti-aids campaign) featuring Kate Moss on the cover:

Yes, she is black there. Besides the somewhat mean comments (sniffing some white stuff and becoming black) more people have raised there eyebrows because of this. Blackening up is not really new. There were the black minstrels, Darkie Day and not to forget a true Dutch tradition: Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet.

Old, but still funny to read the report about the ‘disgusting’ dishes in different countries.

The quintessential Dutch food experience is the FEBO snack automat. These are great walls of heated compartments, all clad in shiny chrome, brightly lit and impeccably clean. Drop a coin in the slot and the door of your chosen compartment flicks open, disgorging some lump of tasteless deep-fried mystery-meat apologetically sweating grease into its cardboard carton. Nowhere illustrates better the Dutch love of scrubbed cosiness and efficiency and their total indifference to the pleasures of the palate. This sense of culinary anticlimax is everywhere in the country. I will never forget buying what I hoped was a spicy pasty in Rotterdam, only to find that it was filled with nothing but white sauce. Likewise the day a Dutch flatmate cooked us what she swore was a delicious traditional dish, then brought in a pan of reconstituted powdered mash, kale and tinned frankfurters. Even the more appealing Dutch treats, such as double-fried chips with mayonnaise, are spoilt by lack of care: the oil for the second frying is often stale, while the mayo is a form of sickly, watery industrial run-off. Thankfully, the Dutch Indonesians have improved things a little by injecting much needed care and spice into the national diet.

Well there is more of course than only FEBO but yes we could call it Dutch. But be aware, it’s conquering the world, starting in New York with Automat.

De MOI organiseert in samenwerking met The European Law Students’ Association (ELSA Nijmegen) een debat naar aanleiding van het WRR-rapport (Wetenschappelijke Raad voor het regeringsbeleid): “Dynamiek in islamitisch activisme. Aanknopingspunten voor democratisering en mensenrechten”.

In dit rapport onderzoekt de WRR hoe het islamitische activisme zich sinds de jaren zeventig in de moslimwereld heeft ontwikkeld. Nederlandse Islamitische Omroep – Eerste Islamobil in Nederland

Afgelopen zaterdag was in Nederland voor het eerst de Islamobil te bewonderen. Ter gelegenheid van het 25-jarig bestaan van Osdorp, organiseerde de Turkse moskeeorganisatie Milli Gorus een manifestatie waar de Islamobil officieel geopend werd.

De Islamobil is een mobiel informatiecentrum over de islam. Ze kan makkelijk door het land reizen en overal worden neergezet: ideaal voor manifestaties en bijeenkomsten. Aan de buitenkant ziet de Islamobil eruit als een moskee. Met een koepel en twee minaretten op het dak, bogen en tegeltjes op de zijkanten geschilderd. Binnen wordt multimediaal, via beeldschermen en tekstborden, informatie gegeven over de verschillende aspecten van de Islam, zoals over de vijf zuilen, het gebed en de betekenis van Ramadan.

De Islamobil bestaat al langer in Duitsland. Het idee van een mobiel informatiecentrum over de Islam ontstond in 2001 bij een groep jonge Duitse moslims. Ze hadden de wens om groepen mensen op manifestaties en braderieën op een makkelijke manier te kunnen informeren over de Islam. Met de Islamobil hopen zij het beeld van de Islam – door niet-moslims vaak geassocieerd met terrorisme en fundamentalisme – recht te kunnen zetten.

De reacties van het Duitse publiek waren positief vandaar dat de Islamobil nu ook Nederland aandoet op haar tournee. Voorlopig zijn alle teksten nog in het Duits. Maar als er in Nederland net zo positief wordt gereageerd als in Duitsland zal het niet lang duren voordat er een Nederlandse versie komt.

What we miss in all the overviews is the views of the two learned men: prof. Khoury who’s book was used by the Pope and the Persian man from the citations.

Het is zes uur ‘s morgens. Othman Amarnis, 27 jaar, gaat de dienstingang van een groot kantoorgebouw in het centrum van Den Haag binnen. Hij vertelt de bewaker dat hij een afspraak heeft met het schoonmaakbedrijf en loopt door. Hij stapt een willekeurige lift in en loopt zoekend over de nog verlaten kantoorvloeren. Wanneer hij een eenzame schoonmaker ziet stelt hij zich voor en zegt: “Hallo, Othman Amarnis FNV bondgenoten, mag ik even met u praten?” De schoonmaker kijkt hem niet begrijpend aan. “I am from the union, I fight for you!” herhaalt Othman. By now the Pope, in person, more or less expressed his regrets and the Vatican has tried to explain his comments. The reactions, among Muslim leaders, are mixed some welcoming the statement, others saying it is not enough, and again others are displeased because of his retractions, while others could not care less.
An important issue at stake here is of course the relationship between religion and violence. It would be mistake to think that Islam, or any other religion, is inherently violent. It would be also a mistake to think that Islam, or any other religion, is inherently non-violent. (more…)

The Blessed Balance Between Reason and Religion – part 2: Framing the whole thing

And yes, there we are: the Vatican has offered their apologies, but since he hasn’t done that himself it’s not enough for everyone. But let’s go back to the heart of the matter. The core of the pope’s message was:

[T]he world’s profoundly religious cultures see this exclusion of the divine from the universality of reason as an attack on their most profound convictions. A reason which is deaf to the divine and which relegates religion into the realm of subcultures is incapable of entering into the dialogue of cultures.

In this he is attacking secularism with his exclusion of faith from the realm of reason but also Islam because of (in his view) the exclusion of reason from the realm of faith. This might partly be the case but his examples were not correct (not historical and not for the present) so in that view you can consider his speech as unjust, insulting and certainly stupid. What is more striking however, and I can imagine the Vatican is surprised by this, how this speech is immediately framed as either ‘anti-islam’ or ‘the truth about islam’. But in anyway related to Islam, so we can speak of Islamizing the Pope’s speech. (more…)

De boodschap van Samir A.

Nova had gisteren dus fragmenten van de video van Samir. Ik ben op het moment aan het werken aan een publicatie over de spirituele en politieke boodschap van de Nederlanse jihadi’s (en voormalige jihadi’s). Het duurt nog wel even voordat deze gepubliceerd wordt (pas na mijn proefschrift en dat duurt ook nog wel enkele maanden). Het gaat er daarbij om om uit te gaan van wat zij zelf zeggen. Niet om alles maar klakkeloos over te nemen, maar wel om recht te doen aan het uitgangspunt dat het hier om zelfstandige individuen gaat die zelf beslissingen nemen, doelen in het leven hebben, hun eigen wensen en verlangens, politieke en spirituele behoeften. Op basis daarvan binnen de gegeven economische, juridische, sociale en politieke omstandigheden maken zij hun keuzes met betrekking tot datgene wat zij zien als de zuivere islam. (more…)

The choice of the regnal name Benedict, which in Latin means “the blessed,” is significant. Pope Benedict XVI carefully chose his name (which means ‘the blessed’):

Filled with sentiments of awe and thanksgiving, I wish to speak of why I chose the name Benedict. Firstly, I remember Pope Benedict XV, that courageous prophet of peace, who guided the Church through turbulent times of war. In his footsteps I place my ministry in the service of reconciliation and harmony between peoples. Additionally, I recall Saint Benedict of Nursia, co-patron of Europe, whose life evokes the Christian roots of Europe. I ask him to help us all to hold firm to the centrality of Christ in our Christian life: May Christ always take first place in our thoughts and actions!

Recalling this his recent words about Islam might seem strange although there has been some criticism to earlier remarks as well. (more…)

There has been much ado about the statements of Minister of Justice Donner about Shari’a. This is what he said (my translation):

For me it is clear: if two-thirds of the Dutch population should want to introduce the Sharia tomorrow, then the possibility should exist, shoudn’t it? It would be impossible to stop that that under the law. It would be a disgrace to say: ‘That is not allowed!’. The majority counts. That is really the essence of democracy.

Well in essence he is right of course. If two thirds of the Dutch population want to introduce a Christian theocracy, then the possibility should exist because under the current law it is impossible to forbid that. There is no way Donner really would welcome Shari’a: he is too conservative, too Christian for that. So no, he does not think the Dutch should welcome Shari’a as some websites are very eager to point out. So no, he is not ok with that! And stating that:

Piet Hein Donner thinks that there is nothing in Western culture worth fighting for […]

…is just an outright lie.

Nevertheless, his remarks are not very smart. One of the major fears among many native Dutch people is that Muslims will take over, introduce the Shari’a and impose their (supposedly intolerant) views upon others (and a small minority already seems to think that is the case). If he did not realize that or knew that, one might ask him where he has been the last five years.
