Chaotic scenes at Wembley Arena are nothing new for concertgoers. There is the frantic rush to get to the front of stage area, and queues build up for food and drinks. Last night was different. The queues were for the makeshift mosque in the arena’s 200-seat restaurant and the rush was for prayer spaces before the show began as more than 10,000 Muslims attended a charity concert for Darfur.

Billed as the Muslim Live8, the sell-out event was the first of its kind at the venue and drew artists and fans from around the world. To respect Islamic dietary requirements, Wembley became dry and halal for the night.

Once the concert began, the audience quickly abandoned the decorum and restraint normally associated with Muslim events.

Acts such as Outlandish and Sound Of Reason drew claps and cheers from the crowd. Glowsticks were waved. The biggest applause was reserved for the star attraction, Sami Yusuf, who has sold more than 3m albums, but is virtually unknown outside Muslim communities. As he took to the stage, the crowd erupted in screams and wolf-whistles and chanting.

AMSTERDAM – Urenlang lag het levenloze lichaam van Bilal B. (22) in het politiebureau in het Amsterdamse stadsdeel Slotervaart, maar niemand wist wie hij was. De kwaliteit van de vingerafdruk was te slecht voor herkenning, zo bleek later. Maar toen hij ’s avonds laat met behulp van een foto wel kon worden geïdentificeerd, gingen de alarmbellen rinkelen.

Bilal B. behoorde niet alleen tot de harde kern van probleemjongeren. Hij had ook ‘contacten’ met de leden van de Hofstadgroep, aldus de Amsterdamse hoofdofficier van justitie, De Wit, maandag.

Voor fijnbesnaarde zielen die kunst mooi vinden en terrorisme ziek, is het misschien een schokkende boodschap, maar er is een relatie tussen terrorisme en kunst, zo betoogt prof.dr. Bob de Graaf, hoogleraar terrorisme en contraterrorisme. Met een analyse van die – dialectische – relatie opende hij vanmiddag om 16.45 uur het studiejaar van de Campus Den Haag.

Zelfexpressie
In Nederland is er opmerkelijk weinig aandacht voor de overeenkomsten en wederzijdse invloeden tussen gewelddadig radicalisme en kunst, zo constateert hij. Zowel wetenschappers als politici en beleidsmakers proberen voornamelijk economische en sociale root causes te vinden en te beïnvloeden. Dat moet natuurlijk ook, meent De Graaff, maar daarnaast zouden ze meer oog moeten hebben voor de behoefte van – meestal goedopgeleide – jongeren aan zelfexpressie, aan hun ‘fifteen minutes of fame’. Meer oog ook voor de culturele manifestaties in de maatschappij, betere antennes voor ‘what’s in the air’.

Rectificatie Telegraaf Yahya Bouyafa

Enige tijd geleden verscheen er in de Telegraaf een artikel over Yahya Bouyafa dat ook hier geplaatst is. In dat artikel wordt gesuggereerd dat Bouyafa, als voorzitter van de Contact Groep Islam de officiële gesprekspartner van minister Vogelaar, nauw betrokken is bij de Moslim Broederschap en meewerkt aan “verhulde intredestrategie” bij Nederlandse instituties en als doel heeft de Sharia in Nederland in te voeren.

Dit bericht en/of de aantijging is overgenomen diverse websites zoals hier, hier, hier, hier, hier, hier, hier, hier, hier, hier, hier en hier

De kwestie is ook in de Tweede Kamer besproken, op aangeven van de PVV, maar daar is aangegeven dat de vraag nog niet beantwoord kan worden. Inmiddels lijkt het erop dat de informatie nogal ‘dunnetjes’ is. De voorzieningenrechter heeft bij vonnis van 18 oktober 2007 geoordeeld dat de beweringen in het artikel onvoldoende steun vinden in de feiten. Met name is geenszins aangetoond dat De Telegraaf beschikt over informatie van inlichtingendiensten m.b.t. Bouyafa. De Telegraaf is dan ook veroordeeld tot een rectificatie. Aangezien het oorspronkelijke Telegraaf bericht hier ook is overgenomen, plaats ik ook hier de rectificatie:

Rectificatie
In de Telegraaf van 4 augustus 2007 is een artikel geplaatst waarin een verband is gelegd tussen Yahia Bouyafa en de Moslim Broederschap of soortgelijke fundamentalistische groeperingen, onder verwijzing naar (geheime) rapporten van inlichtingendiensten. Bij vonnis van 18 oktober 2007 heeft de voorzieningenrechter van de rechtbank Amsterdam geoordeeld dat De Telegraaf B.V. met de publicatie van dit artikel onrechtmatig jegens Bouyafa heeft gehandeld. Naar het oordeel van de voorzieningenrechter heeft De Telegraaf op geen enkele wijze aannemelijk gemaakt dat op grond van informatie van inlichtingendiensten kan worden aangenomen dat Bouyafa of de organisaties waarvoor hij werkt tot de Moslim Broederschap zouden behoren. De voorzieningenrechter heeft de Telegraaf B.V. veroordeeld tot het plaatsen van deze rectificatie.

Verklaring van Marokkaanse organisaties in Amsterdam n.a.v. de incidenten in Slotervaart

“Achterstand is dynamiet”

Afgelopen week heeft de Amsterdamse Gemeenteraad bij de presentatie van de begroting 2008 haar zorg uitgesproken over de toenemende tweedeling in Amsterdam, die zich vooral geografisch lijkt te ontwikkelen. Wij betreuren de gebeurtenissen van de afgelopen week rondom het August Allebéplein in stadsdeel Slotervaart, waarbij één dode is gevallen en twee politieagenten zwaargewond zijn geraakt. Allereerst willen wij de familie van Bilal condoleren met het verlies van hun zoon en broer en de twee politieagenten een spoedig herstel toewensen.

Wij betreuren en veroordelen ook de rellen die na afloop van deze dramatische gebeurtenis plaatsvonden. Wij roepen daarom alle bewoners van Slotervaart en met name de jongeren op om de kalmte te bewaren. De bewoners van het stadsdeel, dat gebukt gaat onder een steeds negatievere beeldvorming en sociale onveiligheid, hebben reeds aangetoond samen in staat te zijn om de boel bij elkaar te houden. Met man en macht, 24 uur per dag zijn de buurtvaders, migrantenorganisaties, vrouwenorganisatie, jongerenwerk, politie en het stadsdeel bezig geweest om de rust en orde te handhaven in het stadsdeel. Niet repressie, maar kalmte en rust. Geen polarisatie, maar bindend werken. Dat was en is onze missie. Echter, de discussie en benadering begint een wending te krijgen die zorgelijk is. Preventief fouilleren en harde aanpak zijn kreten die steeds luider klinken.

Met deze verklaring roepen wij het Amsterdamse Gemeentebestuur en lokale politiek op om haar verantwoordelijkheid te dragen en zich niet te laten leiden door de waan van de dag, maar duurzaam te investeren in mensen. Het is ongepast maar ook tragisch dat een buurt waarvan de bewoners lijden onder sociale problematiek en de toenemende verharding nog meer moeten worden gestraft met repressieve aanpak.

Zusters met vragen over de islam kunnen haar bellen. Samira (25) uit Geleen, getrouwd en drie kinderen, zal altijd proberen te helpen. Ze draagt lange zwarte, alles verhullende kleding. En ze vertelt enthousiast over het geluk dat haar geloof haar heeft gebracht. Ze zou dat ook zoveel andere jonge moslims gunnen. Meisjes die met „glitters, franje en sieraden” door het leven gaan. An Internet Jihad Aims at U.S. Viewers – New York Times

The following article in the NYT is about Samir Khan, the writer of the weblog Inshallahshaheed that (among other things) features many videos and messages from Bin Laden and others and has gained some popularity and authority among Dutch audiences. One of the reasons for their interest is of course these political messages but also the fact that sometimes it is combined with ethical and spiritual issues, thereby covering a wide range of issues and showing the multi-layered and multiple modalities of so called ‘radical islam’. First blogging at WordPress (like me) he has now moved to Muslimpad. Salafism growing, but preaches no violence – Radio Netherlands Worldwide – Independent thinking, independent voice – English

The Dutch Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) has published a new report ‘Radical Dawah’. It signals the emergence of a professionally-organised campaign to promote Salafism, a stream of fundamentalism within the Sunni branch of Islam with strong roots in Saudi Arabia. The AIVD says it does not preach violence, but the Service is nevertheless concerned about the possible effects of Salafist “mission activities” in the Netherlands. The report doesn’t describe the actual level of threat, but analyses the developments, background and the influences from abroad.

I have some strong doubts about this report. Are we not going from counterterrorism to countering a particular ideology under the banner of ‘war against terror’? It seems that the salafist movements are closing the gap left behind by the Dutch state in cutting down the welfare state (including social and cultural activities for youth)? (more…)

Piety, defiance and bloodshed mark Middle East Eid

DUBAI (AFP) — Piety, defiance and bloodshed marked the feast of Eid al-Fitr, ending the holy month of Ramadan, across much of the Middle East on Friday.

Charitable groups, rulers and governments met their obligations to the third pillar of the Muslim faith — carrying out zakat, or charitable acts.

The jihadists, or holy warriors, used the occasion and the Internet to spur their followers to greater zeal.

In divided Iraq, where Eid began for Sunnis on Thursday evening and starts for Shiites at sunset on Friday, at least two deadly attacks brought bloodshed to ordinary Iraqis, including children, as they prepared to celebrate.

In Saudi Arabia, the home to Islam’s holiest sites, Mecca and Medina, King Abdullah signalled “Muslim solidarity.” He ordered forgiveness of debts for the families of deceased men and women who had taken loans with the housing development fund and the Saudi loan bank. (more…)
