He is is a co-founder of the radical humanist campaign group the Manifesto Club, and editorial director at the Institute of Ideas. De jaarlijkse actieweek van het Britse voetbal tegen discriminatie zou zich moeten richten op de islamofobie in de sport. Moslims zijn ‘de nieuwe zwarten’ geworden.

Hier zijn wat geluiden die je kunt horen op een willekeurige zaterdag op de voetbalvelden in Europa: ‘Bin Laden! Jij weet best waar ie is!’ ‘Heb je daar een eerste hulpdoos of een zelfmoordbom?’

Nee, het is niet wat Marco Materazzi tegen Zinedine Zidane zei in de finale van het WK. Het is wat een moslimteam uit Luton ten noorden van Londen, voortdurend te horen krijgt.

De jaarlijkse ‘actieweek’ die het Britse voetbal houdt tegen discriminatie begint donderdag, en dit jaar zouden ze het eens over een andere boeg moeten gooien. Alle conferenties die ik heb bijgewoond over racisme in het voetbal, hebben zich gefocust op het uitschelden van zwarte of joodse spelers en dat was ook terecht.

Maar ook racisme is aan trends onderhevig. Sinds 11 september 2001 zijn de moslims ‘de nieuwe zwarten’ geworden. In Franse bevolkingsonderzoeken spreken twee keer zo veel ondervraagden antipathie uit tegen moslims, als tegen zwarten of joden. In een onderzoek van het ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken in Engeland werd de vraag gesteld van welke groeperingen men dacht dat ze nu erger gediscrimineerd worden dan vijf jaar terug. De moslims werden twaalf keer zo vaak genoemd als welke andere groepering dan ook.
