Russia’s Ansar publishing house recently released a book titled “Love And Sex In Islam.” The collection of articles and fatwas — decrees issued by Islamic scholars — was first presented at a book fair in Moscow last summer and immediately became a best-seller. Russia’s muftiyat — or board on Islamic affairs — has criticized the book, which is being sold at most mosques with the word “sex” on its cover hidden.

Maroc.NL – ‘Angst blokkeert onze toekomst’

IslamOnline – Art & Entertainment Section
By Tarek. A Ghanem
As a medium, the Internet, with its setting and structure, seems to favor modernist Islam. For the Internet, with its basic notion of unlimited access to all, provides equal footing for the qualified and the commoner alike. There is now the boundless and self-perpetuating electronic space where everyone is free to publish their interpretation and judgment. The Quran and the Sunnah are being discussed on popular forums, unlike the in the 7th century, for example, when the discussion of such topics was confined to qualified and specialized scholars. Oversimplification and then absolutization seem to be the order of the day. This has led to what Hofheinz has termed My Islam: a lingo spread on discussion forums and personal web sites wherein generalizations and statements like the Islam I know Islam as everyone knows is are familiar; hence, My Islam.

Dr. Sarah Badran wrote a letter to Osama Bin Laden: ” There is among people one whose words about this world’s life may please you greatly and who calls on God to witness what is in his heart; yet such a one is most stubborn in dispute. And when he turns his back, he goes about the earth, spreading corruption and destroying tillage and progeny, and God does not love corruption. (Quran 2:204-205)”
Don’t know if he listens…

Islam becoming weekend affair, The Milli Gazette, Vol.5 No.15, MG109 (1-15 Aug 04)
Religion, for most of the baby-boomers, my contemporaries, has become a weekend thing, where offering Friday prayers means absolution from everything that is required of a Muslim. One only needs to drive around town on a Friday to find traffic jams on the streets housing the fashionable, mostly air-conditioned mosques, yet the same mosques witness fewer, if any, visitors during morning prayers.

“The new Ramadan has changed our customs beyond recognition,” he wrote. “What has become of neighbors exchanging plates before iftar? What has become of the people in a neighborhood coming together for talk and discussion after taraweeh prayers? Couldn’t we bring back some of these customs in place of an hour or two of satellite TV? Wouldn’t we all be richer if we did?”

Liberales.be – Gun moslima’s eigen sexualiteit – Naema Tahir

“I’m an American,” he boomed inside a Chicago comedy club on a recent night. “But I’m an American Muslim, and, in fact, I consider myself a very patriotic American Muslim, which means I would die for this country …”
He pauses for a second and lowers his voice.
“… by blowing myself up.”

Religion News Blog : Challenging the Quran
“In a note of encouragement to his fellow hijackers, September 11 ringleader Muhammad Atta cheered their impending marriage in Paradise to the 72 wide-eyed virgins the Quran promises to the departed faithful. Palestinian newspapers have been known to describe the death of a suicide bomber as a wedding to the black-eyed in eternal Paradise. But if a German expert on Middle Eastern languages is correct, these hopes of sexual reward in the afterlife are based on a terrible misunderstanding.
Arguing that today’s version of the Quran has been mistranscribed from the original text, scholar Christoph Luxenberg says that what are described as houris with swelling breasts refer to nothing more than white raisins and juicy fruits.”

alt.muslim – your muslim news community
Today, we live in a world where the news always has something related to Islam and the Muslim world. We’re bombarded with it. Everyone in the world is talking about you, and most of the time not knowing what they’re talking about. I don’t explain Ramadan anymore; people just know, and they give you a nod when they find out you’re fasting that could alternatively mean, “Interesting, I’ve heard about that,” or a more worried “Oh, so you’re a practicing Muslim.” If I talk about Ramadan to people, the subject quickly shifts to current events, because these days one cannot talk about being a Muslim without talking about terror, extremism, and the like. Topics that aren’t very conducive to spiritual harmony.

The Harvard Crimson Online :: Opinion
Opinion article that highlights concepts concerning tawheed and jihad.
“I felt that sinking feeling in my stomach when I read the news of Bigleys death. I was terribly sadand I was angry. I was angry at the United States for wreaking enough havoc in Iraq to cause already-mad men to be provoked into mad acts of murder. But mostly, I was angry at the killers. First and foremost because they killed an innocent man. But also because the killers are Muslim, and Im Muslim. And by committing their heinous act they fueled the belief that my religion, Islam, somehow encourages or condones such acts.”

ABC News: Muslims Log On to a Cyber Congregation
“Oct. 15, 2004 Oct. 15, 2004 – From desert camps, hillsides, rooftops, mosques and minarets, the call for the evening prayer during the holy month of Ramadan has drawn Muslims across the world to worship for nearly 1,400 years.
As the first cries of the taraweeh — or special Ramadan prayers — are heard through a raised voice, a bullhorn, or nowadays a rigged-up amplifier, life in villages, towns, cities, and in some cases entire nations, comes to a standstill as the faithful heed the summons in communal displays of faith.
But if many Ramadan rituals have gone unchanged through the centuries, the times are catching up with the world’s fastest-growing religion.
In the next few weeks, millions of Muslims will simply log on to their computers and with the click of a mouse, tune into a live or downloaded broadcast of the taraweeh prayers from the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. “

roanoke.com – Commentary Stories -The problem within Islam
“The history of Islam is one of a struggle between the extreme fundamentalists who claim to hold a monopoly of truth, and who use violence and terrorism to impose their views on fellow Muslims, and mainstream Islam who professes an entirely different vision of the ethical, the moral and the religious.”

“At a convention on the subject of “Pluralism in Islam” which took place in late August, 2004 at the Egyptian Journalists’ Union in Cairo, Sheikh Dr. Yousef Al-Qaradhawi, a leader of the Muslim Brotherhood movement and one of the most important religious authorities in Islamist circles, issued a religious legal opinion permitting the abduction and killing of American civilians in Iraq in order to pressure the American army to evacuate its forces. Al-Qaradhawi stressed the fact that in his view, “all of the Americans in Iraq are combatants, there is no difference between civilians and soldiers, and one should fight them, since the American civilians came to Iraq in order to serve the occupation. The abduction and killing of Americans in Iraq is a [religious] obligation so as to cause them to leave Iraq immediately. The mutilation of corpses [however] is forbidden in Islam.”
