Muslims in Burma

Reading Gabriele Marranci’s website earlier this week I came across a story on the Rohingya Muslims in Burma. It is an interesting story that has hardly received any media coverage the last weeks during the conflict in Burma (see for example a search in Dutch on Google). They mainly live in the Northern part of Burma represent 4% of the Burma population but 50% in that area. Islam was brought to Burma in 9th century via merchants. Their own state, Arkana, was annexed by a Burmese King in the 18th century and in the 19th century by the British colonizers. As happened in other places too, the Burmese Muslims were promised that they would get their own autonomous region which never came into existence. The relationship between Muslims and Buddhists was one of peaceful coexistence during some times and (violent) prosecution and expulsion in other times. Their support for the British troops (while Buddhists supported the Japanese troops), their attempts for having autonomy and of course also the usual meta-narratives about Islam (in which the destruction of the Bamyan statues by the Taliban plays in important role) show how global and local narratives influence the position of these Muslims.

Amr Khaled is one of the most influential preachers at this moment; one has who little attention from the mainstream media. His work can be seen as plea for a Muslim renaissance, combining career, enjoying life and a pious lifestyle. Conservative in his message with a strong positive and empowering outlook in particular for the well-to-do youth.

A few years ago a Dutch language website appeared: Lifemakers.nl, spreading his message here. Amr Khaleds website already had a Dutch language section. It has been quiet for quite some time now with regard to their activities. Now there is also Dar al-Tarjama, also with a Dutch language section.

Veel moslims, voornamelijk van de tweede en volgende generaties die in Nederland geboren zijn komen sneller in aanraking met mode en trends. Zij voelen zich vaak Nederlander en moslim tegelijk, waardoor de vele stijlen met elkaar in aanraking komen. Het is de vraag hoe zij hier mee omgaan, en wat dat voor invloed heeft op de islamitische mode. De economische mogelijk en onmogelijkheden van deze ontwikkeling is voor ons aanleiding voor deze lezing. Een internationaal panel bij deze lezing geeft helderheid over de bevindingen in andere landen.

Aan deze lezing is ook een iftar verbonden.

Mecca2Medina is the most popular Muslim hiphop group in the UK. Hiphop is a progressively popular musical genre among Muslim musicians in Britain. A large number of these artists are black converts, with an African-American, Caribbean or African background. On its website Mecca2Medina states:

Although Islam is still the fastest growing religion worldwide, it is generally felt that Muslim children growing up in Western-influenced societies, have found it hard to readily recognise the beauty of the gift Allah (SWT) has generously bestowed upon them.

The work of Mecca2Medina expresses self confidence and pride; relates of European as well as transnational Islam. The three British-African band members offer their vision of a good Muslim via the music that fits them best: contemporary hiphop. Next to raising awareness and pride among Muslim youths, contemporary Islamic artists aspire to promote a positive image of Islam within Western societies as well, and so help to counter the negative image of Islam often diffused by Western media.

This is also the case with Pearls of Islam (supporting act), which represents the new trend of pious Muslimas expressing their religious commitment via music – going against the often heard and debated opinion that women have no place on stage. For the two Caribbean women of Pearls of Islam

their love for their religion is the most important thing.

The Pearls play nasheed: songs supported by percussion, a creative way to accommodate the orthodox ban on ‘music’.

Andrej Holm and Matthias B. have publicized a lot about gentrification. Unfortunately for them the same concept is also used by left-wing radicalists in their so-called anti-capitalist struggle. Moreover, in their research activities they, of course, come into contact with these groups.

This, and more, has led to charges against them and their subsequent arrest. According to the arrest warrant against Andrej Holm, the charge made against the above mentioned four individuals is presently justified on the following grounds, in the order that the federal prosecutor has listed them: (more…)

‘Qur’an should be banned’ – Wilders strikes again

The leader of the Netherlands’ right-wing Freedom Party, Geert Wilders, has called for a ban on the sale and distribution of the Qur’an. He would also outlaw the book’s use in the mosque and at home. Mr Wilders says the Qur’an (Koran) is a fascist book which promotes violence and is similar to Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf.

In a letter-to-the-editor in today’s de Volkskrant newspaper, Wilders argues that the Qur’an should only be permitted for research at an academic level.

However, the MP – who is known for his controversial statements about Islam – says he knows his proposal doesn’t stand a chance of being approved by parliament. His Freedom Party has nine seats in the 150-seat Dutch lower house of parliament.

A warning
Geert Wilders says he wants his proposal to serve as a warning to radical Muslims who misuse the Qur’an to justify the use of violence. His statement comes in response to the recent attacks on Ehsan Jami, founder of the Committee for Former Muslims. He says the perpetrators use the Qur’an as an excuse for the attacks. Wilders writes that“The book incites hatred and killing and therefore has no place in our legal order.”The jurist, commentator and co-member of the Committee for Former Muslims, Afshin Ellian also thinks that the Qur’an “possesses extremely violent passages with regard to women, Jews and non-believers”. However, he is against a ban. Mr Ellian says you should take measures against the people who abuse the Qur’an, not the book itself:

“It’s a religious book which of course can be read and discussed. What we really should fight are the radical imams and mosques which use the Qur’an to spread hatred. We must take firmer measures against them.”

Hitler
Geert Wilders compares the Qur’an with Mein Kampf, which was written by Adolf Hitler in 1924. In his book, Hitler explained his theories about National Socialism, anti-Semitism and the superiority of the Aryan race.

The sale of Mein Kampf is outlawed in the Netherlands, but owning or trading old copies is permitted. However, Mr Wilders’ proposal to ban the Qur’an is more drastic than the ban on Mein Kampf because it would also outlaw the possession of the book.
