It is difficult to recite `slokas’ from the Bhagavad Gita and understand them, but a Muslim girl from this tiny village in Ibrahimpatnam mandal secured State-level second prize in Bhagavad Gita reciting competitions conducted by Vishwa Hindu Parishad in Hyderabad.

No teeth…? A mustache…? Smells like shit…? BOSNIAN GIRL!

The poster was based upon very unfriendly texts about Muslims in Bosnia, supposedly made by members of Dutchbat. Members of Dutchbat III (who failed to protect the Muslim enclave of Srebrenica and prevent the slaughter of Muslim men and boys, stationed at Srebenica), have been awarded a medal which, according to minister of defense Kamp, acknowledges that their position at the time of Srebenica Massacre was extremely difficult and that the soldiers were powerless. Bosnian authorities have protested against this and for example the organisation Mothers of Srebenica see this as injustice and would rather see Dutchbat III as an example of the ‘Hall of Shame‘.

There has been not much debate about this in Dutch politics and Dutch media; which is extraordinarely. No matter which side you take, Srebenica is one of the biggest failures of the international community since World War II and the Dutch are part of it, whether they want it or not. Important to note is also that certain parts of Dutchbat II and III showed many anti-muslim sentiments; which is not to say that Dutchbat in itself was anti-Muslim or that all soldiers were anti-Muslim (there were also those who helped Muslims of course) or that some grievances were not caused by encounters with some Bosnian Muslims, or that the Dutch were the only ones with these sentiments.

Nevertheless, the sentiments among Bosnians these days about the medals for Dutchbat are understandably negative. One of the means the express these angers is an emailaction, called AFERIM:

The fact that anti-semitism is very prominent in the Middle East is well known and also very disturbing. On the one side we have the people who use this anti-semitism as a means to cover up their own failures and on the other side people who use the anti-semitism of the former to….well to cover up their own failures. Denial of the holocaust is very much part in the discourses of both sides (in different ways of course). I wonder how Arab people who actually stood up and tried to save Jews during Holocaust fit into that black and white picture.

In the event, he found not one saviour but many. Wherever he went he collected stories about Arabs welcoming Jews into their homes, sharing their meagre rations, guarding their valuables so Germans could not confiscate them, and warning leaders about SS raids. Abdelwahhab, who died in 1997 aged 86, features prominently in his gallery of heroes, along with Si Ali Sakkat, a former mayor of Tunis who hid 60 Jewish workers who had fled a labour camp, and Si Kaddour Benghabrit, the rector of a Paris mosque, who helped 100 Jews evade persecution in 1940. Similarly, the Bey of Tunis, Tunisia’s wartime ruler under the Germans, is reported as having told members of his government: “The Jews… are under our patronage and we are responsible for their lives. If I find out that an Arab informer caused even one hair of a Jew to fall, this Arab will pay with his life.” As one old gentleman from a small town in Tunisia remarked, “The Arabs watched over the Jews.”

Satloff is prepared for such tales of Arab derring-do to stir controversy. Denial of the Holocaust in Arab lands is not uncommon. The leader of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, has declared to his supporters that Jews invented the “legend” of the Holocaust. Hamas’s official website has labelled the Nazi effort to exterminate Jews “an alleged and invented story with no basis”. And recently, President Bashar al-Assad of Syria told an interviewer he doesn’t “have any clue how [Jews] were killed or how many were killed”. So if the Shoah never happened, or has been exaggerated, how can Arabs such as Si Kaddour Benghabrit or the Bey of Tunis have played any part in it – noble or otherwise?

It was witnessing the 9/11 attacks that prompted Satloff to embark upon his book. Watching the twin towers collapse, an event he saw from the relative safety of a Midtown office building in Manhattan, he wondered what he, as a Jew, an American and an Islamic scholar, could do to bring together warring ideologies. In his mind, the plume of smoke rising from the towers conjured up the chimneys of the death camps. “I decided that the best thing I could do would be to combat Arab ignorance about the Holocaust,” he says. “And the most effective way of doing that was to tell a positive story. Any history that I wrote had to involve the Islamic world and its Arab heroes.” As he points out, in a fractured, fragmenting world, dialogue is both desirable and essential.

It seems that not a single Arab is listed among those honored at the Holocaust memorials. Seeking a hopeful response to the plague of Holocaust denial sweeping across the Arab and Muslim worlds, Robert Satloff set off on a quest to find an Arab hero whose story would change the way Arabs view Jews, themselves, and their own history. In this book—a mix of history, travelogue, and memoir—Satloff tells the story of finding much more.

‘Het plan voor boek ontstond twee jaar geleden, tijdens een Marokkaans huwelijksfeest waar we samen te gast waren. De uitbundigheid van vooral de eerste generatie Marokkaanse vrouwen was opvallend. Vol overgave stortten zij zich in het feest: dansend, schreeuwend, joelend.
Aan het eind van de avond, toen hun mannen buiten stonden te wachten, trokken ze hun kleren recht, verborgen hun haren en liepen met zedige blikken de feestzaal uit, hun dagelijkse leven in.

Wij bedachten hoe jammer het is dat deze vrouwen zo onopgemerkt blijft. Wie zijn ze? We zien ze op straat, hebben een mening over hen, maar hun verhalen horen we niet. Zij zijn de moeders van grote gezinnen, de vrouwen van de eerste gastarbeiders, maar ook pioniers, die hun land verlieten voor een betere toekomst. Hoe zag hun jeugd eruit? Wat verwachtten ze van hun leven in Nederland? En wat is daarvan uitgekomen?

Hun verhalen bleken verassend divers: soms bizar, ontroerend en grappig, maar ook schrijnend. Na afloop hebben we hun dochters gevraagd hoe zij hun moeder zien, en wat er na één generatie is veranderd.’

Hanina Ajarai (Ijarmaouas, 1981) studeerde Arabisch in Leiden. Marjolijn van Heemstra (Amsterdam, 1981) studeerde religiestudies, schrijft theaterstukken en recenseert voor Trouw. Samen schreven ze jarenlang voor Viva en Contrast.

Zijn armpje werd verpletterd door een auto er over heen te laten rijden en hij kan hem nooit meer gebruiken.

Dutch Elections – The day after

Four people have send me an email, asking me what did I vote. Well, I’m not going to tell you.

For a nice summary of the election result see the Washington Post. As expected, no party won enough seats for a majority in the lower house of parliament. The patterns shifted significant numbers of seats to parties with extremist views and robbed moderate parties of influence — a result that stunned government officials and political analysts. Of course this shift receives most of the attention, nevertheless the traditional social-democrats and christian democrats remain the largest parties in this country, with the christian democrats of PM Balkenende on top. I don’t think this points to a great change but I think it is evidence of a great divide in society. Between people who focus on bourgeois values and want to maintain peace and social harmony (even with Muslims) and others who want to seek confrontation. This latter group can be divided into two subsections. The first group (people who voted for Wilders) want to seek confrontation with, in their perception, intolerant (radical) Muslims. The other group wants to seek confrontation with, again in their perception, the growing intolerance towards migrants by people like Wilders and Verdonk.

UPDATE

The biggest winners in the election are Wilders’ party Party for Freedom, the Christian Union and the Socialist Party. All three parties promote a very idealized form of communitarianism: inward oriented, trying to uphold a sense of gemeinschaft/community and social cohesion among the people. The Party for Freedom does that by stressing the importance of being Dutch, Dutch culture, Dutch values and norms:

[…]to preserve our common heritage. The struggle for the survival of our traditional values is not limited to one country.

It is not very clear what that common heritage exactly is, but since Islam and Muslims play the role of the ultimate other in their program, it is clear what that common heritage is not. The Christian Union also focuses on social cohesion:

For a Sustainable and Relational Society

The ChristianUnion frames its political views on current political issues in obedience to the Word of God. […] Starting point for this election program is that people come to their right in relation with other people. People should never be shut out; that is our motivation to invest in opportunities at the labour market for everyone.

And the same goes for the SP:

The social divide has grown, health care and education have deteriorated. The soul has been torn from our society, by which I mean the mutual understanding. Recently someone said to me, “What belongs to all of us has been lost.” And this is also the case. Public space has disappeared and the public sector has fallen into decline. I adhere to the dialectical idea that the more intensely something becomes itself, the more likely it is, ultimately, to cancel itself out.. I am convinced that in the next few years the indifference and superficiality will give way to a greater involvement and engagement.

The other party that has claimed victory, the Christian Democrats, have lost votes but are still the largest. The parties mentioned above, PVV,CU and SP, have campaigned against the European Constitution. Not really in the sense that they are anti-international or anti-globalization but in a sense that they don’t want globalization at the expense of the Dutch people. The same sense of inward looking and more or less the same communitarianism can be found at the Christian Democrats (no quotation: they don’t have an english language section…..).

This trend of looking inwards and turning against globalization and European unification can also be discovered in the latest election campaign: migration, the war against terror, development aid and Europe were never a real issue. Parties like the Green Left, D66 and VVD, that have campaigned in favor of the European constitution, have a more international oriented perception (although one could not really discover this during the campaign), have lost big time.

Important to note is also the significant contribution of the migrants in this election. 69,7% of the migrants have voted: the highest number ever which results in 13 seats in Parlaiment. Ten out of 13 have gone to left wing parties:  PvdA receives 6 (35,8% of the Turkish migrants have voted for the social democrats), SP 3 (17% of the Moroccan migrants have voted for SP) and Green Left 1. Christian Democrats and D66 both one seat.
But I could be wrong of course.

Dutch actress Maryam Hassouni (her parents are Moroccan) has won the Emmy Awards for best actress for her role in the Dutch telepic Offers, directed by Dana Nechushtan.

This is the story about a man and women who get caught in the middle of the fight between terrorists and their opponents.

Vrijdag 17 november 2006 – Goirle – Terwijl de aandacht uitgaat naar meisjes die worden uitgebuit door ’loverboys’, is een even grote groep jongens actief in de prostitutie. Lou Repetur, kwartiermaker Informatiepunt Jeugdprostitutie, pleitte gisteren in Goirle voor aandacht voor deze groep.
Loverboys krijgen op het moment enorm veel aandacht, maar over jongens die onder dwang zich prostitueren is nog maar weinig bekend. (more…)

The Secretary-General of the United Nations has launched an initiative, co-sponsored by the Prime Ministers of Spain and Turkey, for an Alliance of Civilizations.

The key reasons for the growing divide between Muslim and Western societies are not religious, but political, concludes a report presented to Secretary-General Kofi Annan today in Istanbul. On receiving the report, the Secretary-General said: “We need to get away from stereotypes, generalizations and preconceptions, and take care not to let crimes committed by individuals or small groups dictate our image of an entire people, an entire region, or an entire religion. “We should start by reaffirming – and demonstrating – that the problem is not the Koran, nor the Torah or the Bible. Indeed, I have often said the problem is never the faith – it is the faithful, and how they behave towards each other.”
In its report, the High-level Group of the Alliance of Civilizations maintains that although
religion is often cynically exploited to stir passions, fuel suspicions and support alarmist
claims that the world is facing a new “war of religion”, the root of the matter is political.
Furthermore, the Arab-Israeli conflict has become a critical symbol of the deepening rift.
Along with Western military interventions in countries like Iraq and Afghanistan the Group
argues, this conflict contributes significantly to the growing sense of resentment and mistrust that mars relations among communities. The report also suggests that the repression of nonviolent political opposition and the slow pace of reforms in some Muslim countries is a key factor in the rise of extremism.

Non-Muslims point to the subjugation of women that occurs in many Muslim countries, especially those that claim to be ‘Islamic’, while many Muslims read the Qur’an in ways that seem to justify sexual oppression, inequality, and patriarchy. Taking a wholly different view, Asma Barlas develops a believer’s reading of the Qur’an that demonstrates the radically egalitarian and antipatriarchal nature of its teachings.

Asma Barlas will show how reading inequality into the Qur’an serves a function for those who choose or were taught to read that way. Contrary to what both conservative and many non-Muslims believe, Muslim women do not have to abandon islam to liberate themselves, but can struggle for equality within the framework of Qur’an’s teachings.

Asma Barlas is professor of Politics and Director of the Center for the Study of Culture, Race, and Ethnicity at Ithaca College, New York. Her research focuses on how Muslims interpret and live islam. In “Believing Women” in Islam: Unreading Patriarchal Interpretations of the Qur’an (University of Texas Press, 2002) she proposed a liberatory Qur’anic hermeneutics that allows Muslims to argue on behalf of sexual equality and against patriarchy from within an Islamic framework. In her current and on-going research, she studies Christian-Muslim encounters from both a theological and a historical perspective with a view to analyzing their views on Otherness (i.e., the idea of difference).
Other publications: Islam, Muslims, and the US: Essays on Religion and Politics (India: Global Media, 2004) and Democracy, Nationalism, and Communalism: The Colonial Legacy in South Asia (Boulder, CO: Westview Press, 1995).

In zo’n debat moet je soms vies en hard durven schreeuwen. Dat zou ik ook anders doen dan Femke Halsema. GroenLinks mag harder zijn, bijvoorbeeld tegen zo iemand als Geert Wilders. Zeg maar gewoon dat hij een racist is! Als je zijn verkiezingsprogramma hebt gelezen kan je niets anders concluderen. Je krijgt rillingen van het Übermenschen-idee dat daaruit spreekt.’

In Memoriam: Clifford Geertz

‘man is an animal suspended in webs of significance he himself has spun‘ is zo ongeveer de enige zin die ik me nog letterlijk kan herinneren uit mijn studie en in ieder geval één van de mooiste zinnen. Als ik toch eens zo mooi kon schrijven met zoveel inhoud…hmmm dan had ik vast een echte full time baan…

De zin is afkomstig van Clifford Geertz. Hij is afgelopen week op 80-jarige leeftijd in de VS overleden. Geertz is vooral bekend van de symbolische antropologie: Symbolen geven richting aan het handelen.Geertz ziet cultuur “een systeem van geërfde concepten, uitgedrukt in een symbolische vorm, door middel waarvan mensen hun kennis en attitude ten aanzien van het leven communiceren, bestendigen en ontwikkelen. Cultuur geeft mensen daarmee de mogelijkheid om betekenis toe te kennen aan de wereld waardoor deze begrijpelijk wordt. Antropologen moeten zich erop toeleggen die symbolen en de werking ervan te verklaren. (more…)
