Never heard of this guy, but that really means nothing. W.G. van Dorian has written a book called: The New World Order Part One: The Invisible Invasion.

The Conservative Voice has an interview with him and provides some background information:

Van Dorian worked as an attorney in Criminal Law and Immigration Law in The Netherlands and Aruba. As such, Van Dorian came into close contact with terrorism and religious extremism.

After the recent murders of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh and Dutch politician Pim Fortuyn (supposedly the next president), Van Dorian decided The Netherlands was no longer a safe haven to write anything that is critical towards extremism.

He emigrated from The Netherlands to South America to publish his novel without having to fear repercussions from extremists.

Part One of a series titled The New World Order, the fictional thriller, The Invisible Invasion, describes a possible escalation in the world of (nuclear) conflict in the future with very realistic roots of religious extremism in present day Europe.

Recently, contributor Jim Kouri spoke with Van Dorian via e-mail. He remains in hiding in South America.

Darfur!

Ja, juist ja, Darfur met een uitroepteken. Jan Pronk heeft nogal wat teweeg gebracht met zijn recente uitspraken. Het mooie gevolg zou zijn dat Darfur toch maar eens wat meer in de belangstelling komt te staan, maar de publiciteit gaat toch vooral over Jan Pronk zelf. Voor wie echt wat meer wil weten, verwijs ik bij deze even naar Gin van weblog The Vault. Haar stuk over Darfur staat ook op Sargasso:

Mocht u het willen weten, Darfur ligt in Oost-Afrika. Er is oorlog. Al vanaf 2003. Er zijn honderdduizenden mensen op de vlucht geslagen. Er zijn tot nu toe ongeveer 350.000 doden gevallen. Naar schatting uiteraard, want wie weet dat soort dingen nou precies? Of liever gezegd, wie wil dat soort dingen nou weten? Net zoals niemand wil weten waar het conflict nou eigenlijk écht over gaat. De media houden hardnekkig vast aan het verhaaltje dat Arabische milities de niet-Arabische bevolking wegjaagt. En dat is wel heel simpel gesteld. Want Arabische en Afrikaanse Darfurianen verschillen, anders dan in taalkundig opzicht, nauwelijks van elkaar: allen zijn moslim, zwart van huidskleur en negroïde. De culturele, raciale en religieuze identiteiten die nu een belangrijke rol spelen in het conflict zijn allerminst voor de hand liggend maar kennen hun oorsprong in de raciale staat. En daar ligt de sleutel tot de oplossing. Als eenmaal erkend wordt dat de Arabische racistische ideologie van de Sudanese overheid de reden en motor achter het conflict is, dan kan als tweede stap misschien het woord genocide geherintroduceerd worden.

Op Sargasso vindt u ook een link naar een paper met meer achtergrondinformatie over het conflict. Interessant is ook het artikel van Karin Willemse in ISIM Review 15. In ‘Darfur in War: The Politicization of Ethnic Identities’ (PDF) besteedt zij niet alleen aandacht aan het proces waardoor de strijd in Darfur etnisch gelabeld wordt, maar ook aan de positie van vrouwen daarbij. Het woord genocide kan daar in één adem genoemd worden met gendercide: met name vrouwen worden systematisch aangevallen, verkracht, mishandeld, enzovoorts.

De weg naar de hel…

…is geplaveid met goede bedoelingen. Goede bedoelingen die zitten er ongetwijfeld achter het CNV-plan om een christelijke feestdag in te ruilen voor een islamitische. Net zoals bij de Shari’a gedachte van Donner, hadden ze dit misschien even moeten overleggen met moslimorganisaties. Dan hadden ze ook de consequenties kunnen overzien. Het is sowieso vrij lastig om bijvoorbeeld het Suikerfeest vast te stellen; als moslims het daar zelf niet over eens kunnen worden moet de Nederlandse overheid dat dan maar gaan bepalen? Wat te denken over de angst van de tsunami van islamisering? Toch zit er wel iets in, alleen het plan gaat niet ver genoeg. (more…)

International Crisis Group – Getting the UN Into Darfur

The ICG has written a report about the UN and Darfur:

The impasse over deploying a major UN peacekeeping force to Darfur results directly from the international community’s three-year failure to apply effective diplomatic and economic pressure on Sudan’s government and its senior officials. Unless concerted action is taken against the ruling National Congress Party (NCP), Khartoum will continue its military campaign, with deadly consequences for civilians, while paying only lip service to its many promises to disarm its Janjaweed militias and otherwise cooperate. No one can guarantee what will work with a regime as tough-minded and inscrutable as Sudan’s, but patient diplomacy and trust in Khartoum’s good faith has been a patent failure. The international community has accepted the responsibility to protect civilians from atrocity crimes when their own government is unable or unwilling to do so. This now requires tough new measures to concentrate minds and change policies in Khartoum.

Sociale en fysieke ruimte

Enige tijd geleden was ik in Spanje, mooi weer, weekend dus ook alle Spanjaarden erop uit. Het park waar ik was, was stampensvol met oude mannen en vrouwen, gezinnen met kleine kinderen enzovoorts enzovoorts. De favoriete bezigheid, naast voetballen met de kids, was barbecuen. Er stonden zeker zo’n 20 barbecues in het park. Op die manier is het natuurlijk wat gecontroleerder dan wanneer mensen zomaar ergens in het wild barbecuen; gezien de bosbranden in Spanje een begrijpelijk aspect. Maar de barbecue voorzieningen leken mij er ook voor te zorgen dat het park een ontmoetingsplek werd. Dat laat zien hoe de ruimtelijke structuur en de sociale structuur op elkaar afgestemd kunnen worden.

Dit is ook het centrale punt van het onderzoek van Eda Ãœnlü Yücesoy die onderzoek heeft verricht naar de vraag hoe Turkse vrouwen in de Wesselerbrink tegen de openbare ruimte aankijken. (more…)

Nou nou de jongens (en meisjes?) van Sargasso zijn gul geweest voor me:

Met daarbij als aantekening: Extra impuls (bv blogger erbij of nieuwe inspiratie)

Nou zo goed heb ik nog nooit gescoord. Die extra impuls kunnen jullie trouwens wel vergeten. Er komt hier nooit een blogger bij en ik blijf gewoon doorzeiken zoals ik eerst gedaan heb. Toch grappig hoe dat werkt eigenlijk. Waar haalt Sargasso het lef en de autoriteit vandaan om andere blogs te beoordelen? Geen idee, maar die battle of the blogs zorgt er wel voor dat ze het lef en de autoriteit hebben en behouden. Al is het maar omdat anderen zoals de Telegravin ook graag melding mogen maken van hun score (met kroontje – het ultieme bloggersgeluk). Aangezien ik nu ook al mee doe met Sargasso omhoog te stuwen in de vaart der volkeren, zal ik maar snel met deze post stoppen.

Kasseler Bürgerpreis – Glas der Vernunft

Ayaan Hirsi Ali

In diesem Jahr wird der Kasseler Bürgerpreis zum 16. Mal verliehen. Das Kuratorium der Gesellschaft der Freunde und Förderer des Kasseler Bürgerpreises hat die nie-derländische Politikerin Ayaan Hirsi Ali zur Preisträgerin 2006 gewählt.

Damit soll ihr Einsatz für die Integration von Migranten/innen und gegen die Diskriminierung von Frauen gewürdigt werden. Die Preisverleihung wird am Sonntag, 01. Oktober 2006, 11.30 Uhr, im Rahmen eines Festaktes im Blauen Saal des Kongress Palais Kassel – Stadthalle erfolgen.

Arbeitsthema der Veranstaltung wird sein “Integration von Immigranten, eine Multikulturelle Aufgabe”. Die Festrede wird der WamS-Redakteur und Buchautor Günther Lachmann (“Tödliche Toleranz – Die Muslime und unsere offene Gesellschaft”), die Laudatio Alice Schwarzer, Herausgeberin der EMMA, halten.

A particularly typical example of liberal guilt “we-feel-sorry-for-you” racism. You see they would have liked to to put a black model on the front but she just would not have sold as many copies. So they used a druggie.

It’s about the latest issue of The Independent (in issue intended to raise money for the anti-aids campaign) featuring Kate Moss on the cover:

Yes, she is black there. Besides the somewhat mean comments (sniffing some white stuff and becoming black) more people have raised there eyebrows because of this. Blackening up is not really new. There were the black minstrels, Darkie Day and not to forget a true Dutch tradition: Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet.

De MOI organiseert in samenwerking met The European Law Students’ Association (ELSA Nijmegen) een debat naar aanleiding van het WRR-rapport (Wetenschappelijke Raad voor het regeringsbeleid): “Dynamiek in islamitisch activisme. Aanknopingspunten voor democratisering en mensenrechten”.

In dit rapport onderzoekt de WRR hoe het islamitische activisme zich sinds de jaren zeventig in de moslimwereld heeft ontwikkeld. De nadruk ligt op intellectuele ontwikkelingen, de veranderende opstelling van islamitische politieke bewegingen en de betekenis van de sharia (islamitisch recht) voor het recht van moslimlanden. De meest opvallende conclusie van het rapport is het advies van de WRR aan de Nederlandse regering om contacten te onderhouden met islamitische politieke bewegingen, zoals de Hamas.

The Maps are to be found here (NOW) and here (AFTER). It is rather daring: even the Israelis are pushed behind the 1967-borders. What kind of ideas do these people have? Do they think the Middle East is a chess board? They want a new summit with Churchill, Stalin and Eisenhower? Probably for people like me, who are obsessed with structure and evolution rather than revolution, they have left one thing the same though. The situation of the Palestinians is still not resolved.

And because it is Sunday I try to give you something funny as well. Usually I go to the Onion.com and pick something there. Not necessary, today you are invited to The Observer.

We were coming back from our holidays in Spain and it was 3am when the flight was scheduled to depart, so we were all pretty tired, but I still had my wits about me. There were these two strange-looking men who came on the flight at the very last minute, and they were both clinically obese. That’s when me and all the other passengers told the cabin crew we weren’t happy and asked for them to be removed. I think we were right. One of them was so fat that he looked like he might explode at any minute.

Demonstratie in Amsterdam voor Palestina en Libanon – Wij Blijven Hier!
Op Wij Blijven Hier! een keurig verslagje van Faisal Mirza over de demonstratie voor Palestina en Libanon en tegen het beleid van Israël en de VS, met fotoverslagje natuurlijk!

De demonstratie tegen het beleid van Israël en de VS vindt plaats in Amsterdam met als verzamelpunt het Beursplein. Na een aantal stimulerende speeches verplaatst de menigte zich van daar naar het Museumplein. De tocht verloopt vredig en duurt bijna 2 uur. Op het Museumplein aangekomen wordt er nog eenmaal door o.a. politici benadrukt waar het vandaag allemaal om draait. Er is opvallend veel kritiek op minister Bot die nog niet de VN wil ondersteunen totdat de twee Israëlische soldaten worden bevrijd.

Lots of trouble in the blogosphere about the picture below. There’s more to it than meets the eye. A nice example of blogjournalism and how it can be done: On the Face :: Putting things in perspective

The photograpers gathered around. Twelve of them. Do you know how many that is? It’s a lot. And they were all simultaneously leaning in with their long camera lenses, clicking the shutter over and over. The parents handed the markers to the kids and they drew little Israeli flags on the shells. Photographers look for striking images, and what is more striking than pretty, innocent little girls contrasted with the ugliness of war? The camera shutters clicked away, and I guess those kids must have felt like stars, especially since the diversion came after they’d been alternately bored and terrified as they waited out the shelling in their bomb shelters.Shelly emphasized several times that none of the parents or children had expressed any hatred toward the Lebanese people. No-one expressed any satisfaction at knowing that Lebanese were dying – just as Israelis are dying. Their messages were directed at Nasrallah. None of those people was detached or wise enough to think: “Hang on, tank shell equals death of human beings.” They were thinking, tank shell equals stopping the missiles that land on my house. Tank shells will stop that man with the turban from threatening to kill us.

And besides, none of those children had seen images of dead people – either Israeli or Lebanese. Israeli television doesn’t broadcast them, nor do the newspapers print them. Even when there were suicide bombings in Israel several times a week for months, none of the Israeli media published gory photos of dead or wounded people. It’s a red line in Israel. Do not show dead, bleeding, torn up bodies because the families of the dead will suffer and children will have nightmares. And because it is just in bad taste to use suffering for propaganda purposes.

Those kids had seen news footage of destroyed buildings and infrastructure, but not of the human toll. They had heard over and over that the air force was destroying the buildings that belonged to Hezbollah, the organization responsible for shelling their town and threatening their lives. How many small children would be able to make the connection between tank shells and dead people on their own? How many human beings are able to detach from their own suffering and emotional stress and think about that of the other side? Not many, I suspect.

So, perhaps the parents were not wise when they encouraged their children to doodle on the tank shells. They were letting off a little steam after being cooped up – afraid, angry and isolated – for days. Sometimes people do silly things when they are under emotional stress. Especially when they fail to understand how their childish, empty gesture might be interpreted.

I’ve been thinking for the last two days about this photo and the storm of reaction it set off. I worry about the climate of hate that would lead people to look at it and automatically assume the absolute worst – and then use the photo to dehumanize and victimize. I wonder why so many people seem to take satisfaction in believing that little Israeli girls with felt markers in their hands – not weapons, but felt markers – are evil, or spawned by an evil society. I wonder how those people would feel if Israelis were to look at a photo of a Palestinian child wearing a mock suicide belt in a Hamas demonstration and conclude that all Palestinians – nay, all Arabs – are evil.

In het themakatern van het juli-nummer (2006) wordt speciale aandacht besteed aan de relatie van Nederland(ers) met Irak. Dat betekent een groot aantal interviews (en portretten): met Joost Hiltermann, Max van der Stoel, en met Nederlandse Irakezen als Mariwan Kanie, Isam al-Khafaji, Emad Salh, Ali al-Jaberi en Fuad Hussein. Maar eveneens een aangrijpend ‘bericht uit Bagdad’ van journaliste Anneke van Ammelrooy en een sober overzicht van de Nederlands-Iraakse betrekkingen. Ook is er volop aandacht voor kunst in ballingschap. Nederland blijkt te grossierenin Iraakse schrijvers, musici en beeldend kunstenaars. En terugkerend naar Bagdad: trouwen gaat natuurlijk gewoon door. Jeroen Kramer illustreert dat met een prachtig portfolio.

AMSTERDAM — A court in The Hague had turned down a request to outlaw pro-paedophile party PNVD.

The ban was sought by the Soelaas foundation which investigates instances of paedophilia in the Netherlands.

But Judge HFM Hofhuis ruled that the PNVD has the same right to exist as any other political party. The court also took into account that Soelaas did not have a compelling and urgent interest to justify a ban.

“They (Soelaas) only want to give expression to their moral concerns. That is far from being sufficient to outlaw a party,” Hofhuis said. Soelaas argued a preventative ban was needed to protect children from the PNVD.

There was an outcry in the Netherlands
and abroad earlier this year when the party was formed by three self-confessed paedophiles to campaign for the legalisation of child porn and sex between adults and children.

The PNVD also seeks to allow teenagers older than 16 to act in porn movies, as long as the participation is voluntary. The age of consent should be cut from 16 to 12, the party says.

The arguments the Dutch judge uses are compelling, but of course because it is an ‘paedophile’ party it doesn’t feel right to me. Can you base a legal system on that kind of feelings?

and abroad earlier this year when the party was formed by three self-confessed paedophiles to campaign for the legalisation of child porn and sex between adults and children.

The PNVD also seeks to allow teenagers older than 16 to act in porn movies, as long as the participation is voluntary. The age of consent should be cut from 16 to 12, the party says.

The arguments the Dutch judge uses are compelling, but of course because it is an ‘paedophile’ party it doesn’t feel right to me. Can you base a legal system on that kind of feelings?
