C L O S E R – Van Hasna naar Gothic – Nou en?

Enige tijd geleden heb ik nogal wat aandacht besteed aan Hasna de inmiddels ex-columniste van NRC en Spunk.nl. Zij gooide, jammer genoeg, het bijltje erbij neer na bedreigd te zijn. Vervolgens vonden enkele mensen dat de Marokkaanse gemeenschap hier stelling tegen moest nemen.

Alle commotie is echter niet alleen terug te redeneren naar berbers vs. arabieren en de marokkaanse gemeenschap. Het heeft ook wel iets te maken met hoe op internet discussies gevoerd worden.

Dat laat ook de volgende affaire zien. De groep Nou En heeft een nummer uitgebracht: Gothic Meisje. En dat roept nogal wat reacties op diverse gothicfora.

“H� gothic-meisje, wat doe je chagrijnig, je ogen staan zo dof en je zegt zo weinig. Ik ben een beetje bang voor jou”,

luiden drie regels van het refrein. En uit een couplet:

“Maar om daarom nou het hele jaar erbij te lopen als een zombie in een vleermuispak, zeg nou zelf, dat is een beetje raar of hang je ‘s nachts ook aan de balken van het zolderdak.”

we dwalen een beetje van het onderwerp af, het gaat erom dat nouen realiseerd dat die k*ttekst niet kan!

Met andere woorden; men wil het liedje van Nouen weg hebben. Gelukkig zijn er ook nog mensen die minder hard van stapel lopen en nuchter wil blijven en tegelijkertijd erg bekende vragen stellen:

Er vermeldt dat niet �lle goths aan de bedreigingen meedoen, wat een vreemde verslaggever, zo hoort dat toch niet?

Op zich helemaal geen rare reactie vanuit de zogenaamde ‘gothic’ scene…

… aangezien uit de tekst duidelijk blijkt dat ze zich richten op de gothic metal scene, en niks van doen (en waarschijnlijk geen eens enig flauw benul) hebben met (van) de gothic scene.

En tja, de metal scene staat nu niet echt bekend om zijn non-agressiviteit, , en zelfspot is zulke types (dus niet de gothic metal scene algemeen… “ik heb niks tegen de gothic metal scene, ik heb wat tegen de uitwassen van de gothic metal scene”) meestal ook al onbekend, dus tja…Daar zitten altijd wel een aantal mensjes tussen die graag een reden zoeken om zich weer eens lekker “uit te leven”.

Zoals dit forum laat zien, heeft de gothic scene wel de zelfspot om te lachen om dit liedje. Maar ja, wij krijgen het alsnog weer op ons bord…

Eigenlijk was dit de druppel die de emmer deed overlopen. Al jaren hebben mensen vooroordelen tegen
Gothics. Wij pikken dit niet langer en gaan deze vooroordelen de wereld uithelpen. Ja dus wij dragen donkere kleding. Ja dus wij luisteren metal en Hard rock muziek. Ja dus wij zijn iets spontaner dan de rest. DUS? Wij hebben toch ook geen commentaar over b.v R&B fans of Hardcore fans? Iedereen heeft zijn eigen stijl van muziek en kleding! Wij zijn niet allemaal depressief! Wij slaan niet mensen zonder reden neer omdat we daar zin in hebben! Wij zijn gewoon mensen net zoals jullie met een iets andere levens stijl!”

MarokkoNederland2005 – Lihoed Maroc

Dit najaar opent het Bijbels Museum de tentoonstelling Lihoed Maroc, die de bijzondere geschiedenis belicht van de joodse gemeenschap in Marokko. In de titel komen de twee werelden samen: Lihoed betekent �joden� in het Marokkaans Arabisch. Op 23 oktober geeft Dr Herman Obdeijn met zijn lezing over de rol van de Joden in de Marokkaanse geschiedenis meer inzicht in de achtergronden van de tentoonstelling.

Geschiedenis: Al ver voor de komst van de islam in de achtste eeuw woonden er joden in Noord-Afrika. De joodse gemeenschap vormt eeuwenlang de belangrijkste en grootste minderheidsgroep in Marokko. Op grond van hun geschiedenis, cultuur en tradities is deze gemeenschap in twee groepen te onderscheiden. De eerste groep zijn de autochtonen, de toshavim, die sinds eeuwen op het platteland wonen. De tweede groep zijn de �verdrevenen�, de megorashim, uit Spanje en Portugal, die vooral in de steden wonen. Deze tweedeling is in de tentoonstelling terug te vinden.

Platteland – Stad: De cultuur van de plattelandsjoden is nauw verweven met die van de berbers. Beiden leefden immers lang in Marokko voor de islam er zijn intrede deed. Tal van objecten laten die gemeenschappelijke geschiedenis zien. Voor de nu in Nederland woonachtige Marokkanen, van oorsprong grotendeels afkomstig van de Berberbevolking in het Rifgebergte, is deze cultuur zeer herkenbaar. Dat dit een gedeeld joods-islamitisch erfgoed betreft, zal voor velen een eye-opener zijn.
De voorwerpen in het stadsgedeelte van de tentoonstelling zijn afkomstig uit steden en grote centra en tonen vaak een rijker karakter qua materiaal en bewerking. Ook wordt hier aandacht besteed aan architectuur en interieur. Een aparte ruimte vormt de muziekkamer; de Marokkaans joodse muziek is bij uitstek een bindmiddel en gemeenschappelijke factor. Dit wordt duidelijk gemaakt aan de hand van instrumenten, foto�s en hoorbare muziek.

Recente ontwikkelingen: De naoorlogse ontwikkelingen en de emigratie van de joden vanaf de jaren �50 worden in beeld gebracht door grote zwart-wit foto�s. Deze vormen de overgang naar het slot van de tentoonstelling. Prachtige verstilde kleurenfoto�s geven een indruk van het nu nog in Marokko aanwezige joodse culturele erfgoed. Ook wordt een gefilmd familieportret getoond, waarin de band van eeuwen tussen de joden en Marokko nadrukkelijk aanwezig is.

De tentoonstelling: De geschiedenis wordt getoond aan de hand van een grote verscheidenheid aan objecten, waaronder gebruiksvoorwerpen, kledij, sieraden, documenten, film en foto�s. De tentoonstelling is voor het merendeel samengesteld uit de priv�-collectie van Paul Dahan uit Brussel, een van de grootste in zijn soort in Europa. Gedurende de looptijd van de expositie vinden verschillende publieksevenementen plaats, waaronder lezingen, concerten en kinderactiviteiten. Lihoed Maroc, Marokko en de joden – een gedeelde geschiedenis, is in het Bijbels Museum te zien van 22 september 2005 t/m 15 januari 2006.

Als je in de trein zit, hoor je nog eens wat. Zo zat ik tegenover twee vrouwen die bij een niet nader te noemen bedrijf werken. Van belang is te weten dat het om een commerciele instantie gaat, waarbij contacten met klanten en representativiteit van de medewerkers zeer belangrijk gevonden worden.

Goed, er was daar dus een sollicitatieprocedure. Twee kandidaten blijven over. Een man en een vrouw. Eén van hen had alle kwalificaties en zeer veel ervaring op hetzelfde werkterrein: de vrouw. De vrouw had echter één probleem. Zij was te dik. Nou ja dik, zei de vrouw in de trein, ze was wat mollig maar niet dik. Maar goed dus je moet toch representatief zijn naar de klanten toe, vond ze. Die vrouw had beter kunnen solliciteren bij concurrent X; daar werken allemaal van die kneusjes. Ja zegt ze, als je ze meewerkt met zo’n sollicitatieprocedure, dan selecteer je toch mensen die een beetje op je lijken (de één was blond, redelijk slank en mooi gekleed, de ander zwart haar, slank of zelfs mager en netjes gekleed).

Opvallend is dat de man die wel aangenomen werd, wel als zeer dik omschreven werd. Maar ja, ‘hij komt zo gezellig over, dat is ook belangrijk voor een stukje klantcontact’.

In de Elsevier stond enige tijd geleden een stukje over dikke mensen als paria, maar er zit schijnbaar ook nog een gender component bij.

In a move mirroring the recruitment process at the Central Intelligence Agency, a website affiliated with al Qaeda has announced it was recruiting for a number of vacant posts, including compiling reports by militant groups in Iraq , written and audiovisual, assembling information from satellite television channels on extremist Islamic groups and their activities in Palestine , Iraq , and Chechnya . It was also seeking language specialists with excellent knowledge of Arabic and English, both oral and grammar.

Other vacant positions that al Qaeda hopes to fill are a video programmer and a researcher for news on Muslims worldwide.

The Global Islamic Media Front said its PR department would follow up the applications and communicate with candidates through private email messages.

Al Qaeda did not indicate the different ranks of the vacant positions. Instead, it said, �Every Muslim should know that his life is not his own; it is the property of this violated nation for whom men have shed their blood. No other issue should take precedence over work for the Umma (Community of the faithful within Islam); it is an obligation for every Muslim.�

According to the message posted by the Front, each applicant should turn to God for guidance and pray before submitting his applications.

Well they are right in comparing it with the CIA. So if you don’t want to join Uncle Osama, just go to Uncle Sam.

For Muslims, it’s a high-tech call to prayer. A new cellular telephone generates five automated reminders a day at prayer time, points Muslims in the direction of Mecca and contains a copy of the Islamic holy book, the Quran, in both Arabic and English.

Already available in the Middle East and Asia, Ilkone – Arabic for universe – recently went on sale in the Netherlands for its European debut.

It will be followed by launches in France, Germany, Italy, Denmark, Belgium and Bosnia in coming months, said Peter Suyk, the managing director of Lebara BV, the phone’s European distributor.

Some Muslims were skeptical.

“I wouldn’t buy one,” said 15-year-old Mohammed Bouyeri, sitting outside Rotterdam’s largest mosque, the Mevlana. “It might be useful for someone at home or traveling, but not at the mosque. Everyone here already knows what time prayers are.”

Sorry, can’t help it but is the boys name really Mohammed Bouyeri or is he joking the reporter? Well it could be his name of course, there will be more people with name…

Usually I don’t ‘do’ these kind of stories, but because I have worked with Mohammed Allach for a short time, I couldn’t resist it. He used to work in Gouda at the Nour mosque where I did my research and then left for another goal in his life: playing professional football. In the famously tolerant Netherlands a multicultural wedding should not be anything exceptional, but as Mohammed and Sanne will tell you, things are not what they used to be.

“The killing of Van Gogh made a big impact on me,” says Mohammed, who is of Moroccan descent but was born in the Netherlands.

“For the first time, I didn’t feel at home here. It was really frightening.

“I got e-mails from Muslim women who’d been spat at in markets, even beaten. Their children too.”

One million of the Netherlands’ 16 million people are Muslim. Mohammed says that their further integration into Dutch society is the only way out of the current crisis.

“The Dutch should give young Moroccans better opportunities,” he says, but acknowledges that Moroccans too have to try harder.

Mohammed recently founded Moroquistars, an organisation aiming to improve understanding between white Dutch youths and young Moroccans, using sports events as a bridge.

Sanne quit her job as a marketing manager to run Mohammed’s foundation.

“It’s all a matter of engaging with each other,” says Sanne.

“Once you actually talk to Muslims, you’ll find often their values are pretty similar to ours.”

But it is a message that many Dutch are sceptical about.

At a party with Sanne’s former work colleagues the conversation is jolly until it turns to the issue of immigration.

“I have a friend at an employment agency,” says Sanne’s friend Els. “She tells me she’ll hire 100 Turks for factory work, but never Moroccans, because they are all lazy.”

“And what about the prisons?” asks another colleague. “All the inmates are dark skinned. I am not saying they are all Moroccans, but …”

A third colleague jumps in. “Most crimes are committed by Moroccans, that’s a fact.”

One issue that deeply worries the Dutch is the rise in Islamic fundamentalism.

It is close to home for Sanne and Mohammed.

Sanne’s sister Marlou was a teacher at an Islamic primary school five years ago when during a lesson a nine-year-old Muslim boy announced that he wanted to become a jet pilot “to bomb the Jews”.

It turned out that the boy had been shown a Hamas propaganda video during religion classes.

Meanwhile Mo’s team Venlo is doing well in the league.

They have secured a spot in the play-offs for promotion to the premiership.

The fans are happy, chanting “Allach is great, ole, ole!”

The local anthem affectionately puns on Mohammed’s family name and religion.

But Mohammed says that recent events have also led to serious racial abuse against Muslim footballers – including the use of an obscene term coined by Van Gogh himself.

“It’s all connected to what’s going on in the world,” says Mohammed. “It started with 9/11, then the Van Gogh killing. Islam is the subject.”

“Mixed emotions,” he says. “We did well in the league but not the play-offs.

“I am sad now, but in two days time I’ll be the happiest guy on earth.”

The wedding is exactly what Mo and Sanne had hoped for: multicultural, relaxed, everyone having fun.

The mayor says that seeing this young mixed couple get married fills him with hope for the future of the Netherlands.

If you believe in the just case that Hagia Sophia should be restored to its proper religious role as a church, for which it was built in the first place, then we ask you to support our petition to the EU Parliament that Turkey should not be admitted as a member of the European Community until it restores Hagia Sophia to its original purpose as a church and not a museum.

We need a minimum of 1.000.000 signatures in order to force the European Union to consider this proposal seriously and debate it immediately as one of the conditions to allow Turkey to be admitted as a new member of the EU.

It is a disgrace and disrespect to a religion and god when holy places are unwillingly turned purely into tourist attractions. How would the Muslims feel if one of their holiest places was turned into a museum for tourists by a conquering power?

With its conversion into a museum in 1934, Hagia Sophia was frozen in some past age, vaguely Byzantine. Directed by the then historicist paradigm that saw the past as unchanging, Hagia Sophia was also understood through the aesthetic of the great museum, that is, aloof and imposing. Both traits were useful to a Turkish government that wanted to break with the Ottoman era that lasted until after World War I. The church of Heavenly Wisdom became thus what the official Turkish act of secularisation called a �unique architectural monument of art� and hence was valued more for its age, art and historical value than for its practical and religious use.

Interesting idea but which Christian church is this monument of a great Christian past going to: the Greek-Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, Coptic Church or some other branch?

And if this is going to be the rule:

It is a disgrace and disrespect to a religion and god when holy places are unwillingly turned purely into tourist attractions. How would the Muslims feel if one of their holiest places was turned into a museum for tourists by a conquering power?

…what about the Alhambra? There is going to be a mosque in the vicinity of the Alhambra but should it be given to the Muslims again (and to what branch?)? Perhaps an exchange between the Hagia Sofia and the Alhambra?

Recognizing Katrina as “the biggest calamity” in the history of the US, Qadeer wondered: “How can we not help out?”

The massive effort was the work of the Houston Muslim Relief Group, a coalition of 20 mosques and local Islamic organizations formed after Katrina to provide help.

It took place in coordination with the Second Baptist Church of Houston and Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston (IMGH).

Al-Zarqawi: Katrina an answer to prayers

In the recording, al-Zarqawi said, “I believe the devastating hurricane that hit the United States occurred because people in Iraq or Afghanistan — maybe a mother who had lost her son or a son whose parents were killed or a woman who was raped — were praying for God and God accepted their prayers.”

An Islamic Trojan! A trojan horse? The wellknown fifth column? No a computer virus that tries to disrupt visits the pornographic websites by displaying messages from the Qur�an.

The low-risk Yusufali-A Trojan horse monitors the websites Windows users are visiting. If the malware sees one of a set of trigger words (such as “teen� or “sex”) in the url it minimises the window so the user cannot see its content and displays a message from the Qur�an instead. The message, partly written in Arabic, contains the following English text:

Know, therefore, that there is no god but Allah, and ask forgiveness for they fault, and for the men and women who believe: for Allah knows how ye move about and how ye dwell in your homes.

“Unlike other malware, it appears this Trojan horse isn’t trying to steal money or confidential information, but acting as a moral guardian instead – blocking the viewing of websites it determines are unsavoury,” said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos.

Nothing new but certainly kind of funny. Other examples are:

Malware featuring an Islamic theme is rare but not unprecedented. Previous examples have include the Mawanella worm which highlighted the friction between Muslims and Buddhists in Sri Lanka and the Cycle worm which contained a message about life in Iran.
