Islam :: Despite religious restrictions, Saudis mark lovers’ day
Beyond the ban, it’s a challenge for couples to be together on Valentine’s or any other day because of strict segregation of the sexes. Dating consists of long phone conversations and the rare tryst. Men and women cannot go for a drive together, have a meal or talk on the street unless they are close relatives. Infractions are punished by detentions.

Cohen: depolarise debate over Islam
11 February 2005
AMSTERDAM — Amsterdam Mayor Job Cohen has said the debate about Muslims and extremism should be conducted “in a more balanced way” in the Netherlands to avoid further polarisation between the Muslim community and the rest of society.
He said the debate’s aggression — in part being driven by the emergence of a real right-wing in the Netherlands — posed the danger of alienating the majority of Muslims who had integrated and “done well” in the Netherlands.
“There is a need for a depolarisation of the debate,” he said.

Two news-items and one blog about the ‘Muslim Boys’: “a pseudo-Islamic criminal gang operating in south London.” “a ruthless gang of black so-called Muslim converts known as the ‘Muslim Boys’.”
According to Indigo Jo’s Blogs (the most interesting and thorough source on this one):
The gang is said to intimidate imams into opening their mosques in the early hours of the morning so that the gang can pray, and to carry out “conversions” of local youths, particularly “feral” children without adult supervision, to Islam at gunpoint. At least one local young man is reported to have been murdered for resisting this “da’wah” in order to set an example to others.
David Cohen has a report on The rise of the Muslim Boys in Thisislondon. This article contains a reference to Richard Reid the “shoe bomber’ which is quite misleading; it has not got anything to with it, although he was involved with the Brixton Muslim community. The chairman of the (wahhabi) mosque distances himself from the violence of these people calling them:
criminals masquerading as Muslims
. The Brixton Mosque is pretty much the same as Salafipublications (the Dutch Selefiepublicaties) and Triod, acording to Indigo Jo’s, who are strongly opposed to Bin Laden cs.

Rendering Islam
Islam and Hip Hop go hand and hand
Rhythm Nation of Islam
pinning through a cipher of Muslim rap with the Bishop of Hip-Hop.
Eric K. Arnold Published: Wednesday, January 19, 2005
“I think that Islam itself is the unofficial religion of hip-hop,” proclaims Adisa Banjoko, the San Jose-based writer, publicist, radio show host of One Mic on KNEW-AM, and student of Gracie-style Brazilian jujitsu. “So much hip-hop has come to be that has referenced Islam, that many of the people themselves don’t even recognize it. Like, why is it that Biggie Smalls was going on about From Mecca to Medina? He’s not talking about Saudi Arabia.”

The Daily Star – Special Reports – Survey sheds new light on Arab views of West
Survey sheds new light on Arab views of West
Data reveals striking evidence of anti-american and anti-british opinions among young
AMMAN: A pioneering survey conducted recently in five Arab countries reveals important and often-surprising data on how Arabs perceive themselves and major Western powers, along with striking evidence of increasingly extremist anti-American and anti-British views among Arab youth.
The survey, entitled “The Arab Street Revisited: Research from Within,” revealed important new insights into how Arabs differentiate between political and cultural values in the West, and also among the different leading states of the West. The surveyed Arabs also differentiate between Western political values which they admire and covet (democracy, justice, rule of law, etc.) and Western foreign policies in the Middle East, which they generally reject and criticize.
Full survey results and analysis will be made available soon on the center’s Web site (http://www.css-jordan.org/)

In several places you can find the story of Hind (no not the Moroccan-Dutch singer). Mahmood’s Den, Virtually Islamic and MuslimWakeUp! are my sources.
No the story of Hind is this one:
Hind el-Hinnawy, a 27 year-old Egyptian costume designer who with one bold gesture scandalized a religiously conservative society wallowing in its own schizoid hypocrisy and had her baby in that ambivalent zone of civil (urfi) marriage, going on to file a paternity suit against the famous, or by now infamous, actor, Ahmed Al-Fishawy.
Mahmood’s Den has the shortest and best summary:
And she’s not dead? Her brother, father, uncle, boy next door didn’t kill her to “purify” her family’s name?
I can’t believe it.. what’s the (Arab) world coming to, when a woman has sex out of wedlock, has an [il]legitimate child and then sues the father for paternity and lives to not only tell the tale but challenges the age-old “honour killing” thing?
Have your own say. Mine is: good on you Hind.
Muslim Wake Up has covered the story very thorough.

Africa’s Sheikhs & Imams meet to disavow FGM
Category: africa Dated: 02/02/2005
A two-day conference, hosted by the Djiboutian government will bring together the highest religious authorities in the Horn of Africa, to deny the traditional practice of female genital mutilation is linked to religion.
By uniting African religious leaders from countries, where FGM is widely practised, campaigners see it as an opportunity to permanently break the link between the cultural practice and Islam and also to reinforce the view that FGM is a violation of womens rights.
Ms Kwateng-Kluvitse added, a lot of the women from those practising communities do believe firmly that its a religious obligation and if you say to women and girls that your prayers are not heard unless youve been cut, or that youre not a good Muslim unless you do it, then we do need somebody who is a religious leader saying that this is not the case.

In Netherlands, Anti-Islamic Polemic Comes With a Price
On the “Dutch Ross Perot”: Geert Wilders.
Wilders’s transgression, according to the extremists demanding his death, is his insulting of Muslims in the Netherlands, with frequent denunciations of Islam. “Islam and democracy are fully incompatible,” he said in the interview. “They will never be compatible — not today, and not in a million years.”

In this article in Dutch by the daily Trouw, Kustaw Bessems reports how the French embassy pressured people like Paul Scheffer, Olivier Roy and Michal Zeeman not to talk to Tariq Ramadan.
All these people were scheduled to appear at the literature festival Winternachten in a debate the situation of mutual distrust in the east en the west.
According to the French embassy Ramadan is a dangerous person; a wolf in sheeps clothes. On Dhimmiwatch and Campuswatch and on Frontpage Magazine there are several articles with the same allegations most of them linked to problems he had getting into (or not into) the US.
On Oumma.com you can the reaction of Ramadan to these events (in French). Both articles, are placed below as well.
