Well yes, the Hadj is in full speed or something like that. Must be very impressive and probably gives people a boost in religiousness and a sense of belonging…

NPR : Role of Islam vs. National Identity in Tsunami Aid
An interesting topic this islam vs. national identity. Islam seems not be supernational in all circumstances.

Day to Day, January 12, 2005 · Does national identity trump faith in the Muslim world’s tsunami aid efforts? NPR’s Eric Weiner reports that some observers in the Muslim world have charged that oil-rich states of the Persian Gulf have not done enough to help fellow Muslims affected by the tsunami. That’s led to a debate about what role national identity plays in determining relationships between Muslim countries.

Lankans see ‘Allah’ written in picture

Lankans see ‘Allah’ written in picture -DAWN – International; 11 January, 2005

COLOMBO, Jan 10: God signed His name in the tsunami that battered Sri Lanka and other countries on Dec 26, and sent it as punishment because humans have been ignoring His laws, Sri Lankan Muslims say.

Proof, according to Mohamed Faizeen, manager of the Centre for Islamic Studies in Colombo, is a satellite picture taken seconds after the tsunami smashed into Sri Lanka’s west coast near the town of Kalutara and as it was receding.

“This clearly spells out the name ‘Allah’ in Arabic,” Mr Faizeen said, pointing to the shape of the waves – a gigantic “E” complete with whorls and side waves that do indeed appear to combine to resemble the Arabic script for the name “Allah”.

Radical Islamic Group Aiding Relief Cause

Well today several entries on radicals islamfolks and their aid (or non-aid) for the victims of the tsunami.

By CHRIS BRUMMITT, Associated Press Writer

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia – An extremist Islamic group with alleged links to al-Qaida has set up a relief camp in the tsunami-stricken Aceh province on Sumatra island, raising concerns its fiercely anti-American members could stir up sentiment against U.S. and Australian troops helping to distribute aid.

Where Is the Jihad Against the Tsunamis?

By Mona Eltahawy

I am waiting for the tape from Osama Bin Laden. It has been a week now since the earthquake and tsunamis that struck Asia, killing more than 100,000 people and leaving millions homeless, heartbroken and at risk of disease. It is the worst natural disaster since 1900.

Trouw, nieuws & achtergronden – Getergde Arabieren slaan terug
Getergde Arabieren slaan terug

Caring has no religion, ask this Jamaat chief in a Cuddalore corner

In Cuddalore, the second hardest-hit town in Tamil Nadu when the killer waves came, a masjid and the local jamaat have emerged as the rallying point for thousands of fisherfolkalmost all of them Hindus and Christians. There are hardly any Muslim fishermen in Cuddalore, and most of the local Muslims are either traderswhich explains the Hindior have NRI sons in the Gulf. There have been no Muslim casualties.

We came to know when people came running to the masjid, minutes after it happened. We decided to do what we could do, says Mohammed Younus, president of the United Islamic Jamaat. Isme kya badi baath hai? he asks

From Noah’s flood to the most recent Tsunami:

How we deal with disasters

From ‘Acts of God’ to ‘Acts of Nature’ and ‘Acts of Man’ – humanity’s reading of catastrophes has changed through the ages.
by Frank Furedi

After the Asian tsunami, how can we make sense of such senseless events? A brief look at history suggests that our answer will depend on the prevailing beliefs of the time.

Religions are different, but grief is same

And while each religion teaches different things about tragedy, all attempt to deal with the universal human experience of grief and sorrow.

Dear visitor,

Welcome on the changed Religionresearch Islam Blog. This blog is still part of the Religionresearch.org website; a website that is started by members of the researchgroup Between Religionization and Secularization of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

We have moved from Moveable Type to WordPress. Certainly no less than before, but some work needs to be done. If you have any advices, comments, please let me know.

With regards,
