NOVA

TERRORISM: AL-QAEDA VS MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD – AN ONLINE FEUD

Roma, 10 Jan. (AKI) – This year’s Eid al-Adha, Islam’s festival of sacrifice, will be celebrated amid a escalating war of words fought on the Internet between al-Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood. On the eve of what is considered one of Islam’s holiest days, which coincides with the end of the annual Haj pilgrimage, two prominent al-Qaeda leaders have both assailed the Brotherhood for what they say is it’s betrayal of Islamist principles.

Al-Qaeda Number 2, Ayman al-Zawahiri, fired the first verbal salvo when on a video message broadcast by Qatar-based TV network Aljazeera on 6 January, he accused the Egyptian chapter of the Brotherhood of serving Washington’s interests.

“That is the truth of the political game America is playing in Egypt, through presidential and parliamentary elections, to exploit the masses and their love for Islam,” he said.

“They (the Brotherhood) said they won 30 seats, now they say they have won 80 and in five years time they will say 100. And so goes [the American] strategy to conceed them some space,” he said, referring to the Brotherhood’s decision to take part in the Egyptian polls.

Al-Zawahiri, describing the Brotherhood as “these Islamic factions who have been pursuing the same strategy (parliamentary legitimacy) for decades” pointed to how the Brotherhood’s founder, Hasan al-Banna, “had tried this experience twice since World War II and failing.”

The Muslim Brotherhood (Egypt) sharp response came from the mouth of its spokesman Essam al-Erian. “Those who are opposing reformist Islamic movements [like the Brotherhood] are the Americans, the autocratic Arab regimes, the secular extremists and al-Zawahiri. What’s that like for a strange alliance,” he said.

The Brotherhood spokesman added that his organisation believed in the use of jihad, or holy war, but only in contexts “like Iraq and Palestine” of self-defence against external attacks.

Just days later, in an audio message posted on the Internet, Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq also raged against what he saw as the Brotherhood’s treachery.

“How can anyone choose any other path but that of Jihad? They (the Brotherhood) have chosen to enter parliament and accept the constitution. Well, they are deviants,” he said.

“I appeal to the Islamic party (the Brotherhood): abandon this strategy which is a losing one for Sunnis and which is not in accordance with (Islamic) Sharia law… Where do you think that road will take you?” he added.

BBC NEWS | World | Europe | French jihadis thrive on alienation

Writer Olivier Roy, author of Globalised Islam, says the main problem is not so much social deprivation as lack of a clear cultural identity.

“They have been uprooted,” he says. “They are alienated from traditional Islam and their parents.”

French policeman escorts a suspected Islamic radical in November 2005 in Bourges
French police frequently arrest suspected radicals in the suburbs
The young men who carried out the London bombings did not view themselves as members of the Pakistani community but as members of a radical Muslim Umma, Mr Roy notes.

“The same is happening in France,” he says.

No one knows exactly how many French Muslims have gone down the same route.

Yacine, a 17-year-old from Saint-Denis near Paris, reckons that five “out of more than 100 kids I know” have become radical.

This percentage seems in line with estimates from police, who believe that about 50 of France’s 1,600 mosques or prayer halls are under the influence of extremists.

Of course, not all radicals are prepared to take up arms. Mr Roy says the number of jihadis in France could be around 1,000.

Olivier Roy argues that the government is wrong to regard the global jihad primarily as a religious phenomenon. Some disaffected youths, he says, are attracted to al-Qaeda simply because of its fighting image.

“In the 1970s they would have joined the radical Left. Today they join radical Islam, both because they often have Muslim roots and because it is the main violent ideology available.”

If militants do not draw their force from Islam itself, putting Muslims under suspicion may not be the best strategy, Mr Roy argues.

French Police, however, feel they have no option but to continue monitoring the Islamic pool from which militants draw their recruits.

“In this field, either you are on top on things and then you barely manage to stop attacks, or you are not on top and then it is even harder to avert them,” Mr Berthomet says.

spiked-politics | Article | Muriel Degauque: Islamo-fascist, freedom fighter or what?

By Brendan O’Neill

Muriel Degauque did not only blow up herself in Baghdad three weeks ago; she also blew to bits the various stereotypes of Islamic terrorists. Supporters of the war in Iraq and the war on terror tell us that these Islamists, or ‘Islamo-fascists’ as they like to call them, are evil Johnny Foreigners who were likely raised on a diet of falafels and hatred for the West in some dusty hole in Kabul or Cairo. Anti-war activists claim they are resistance fighters, the shock troops for a new ‘anti-imperialist ideology’ (as Loretta Napoleoni says in her recent book on Abu Musab al-Zarqawi); or, like the 7/7 lot, they’re Western-born Muslims so aggrieved by what is being done to their brothers and sisters in Iraq and Palestine that they feel compelled to strike against the imperialist beast (1).

So how do these two camps explain Muriel Degauque?

Informed Comment – Muriel Degauque and the Al Aqaeda ‘Cult’

On Juan Cole’s Informed Comment a short comment on the Belgian woman who blew her self up in Iraq:

The case of Muriel Degauque, the poor Belgian Catholic girl who became a kamikaze in Iraq, has sent a chill through Europe. As I have argued before, the jihadi mindset is a cult-like ideology that is like software and can be installed in any mind. It is a set of plausibility structures, of premises that lead inexorably to killing oneself and others for some vague Cause. It is so insidious precisely because people inside the movement find the premises so compelling. It is not really anything to do with Islam per se, and most of the kamikazes don’t know much about formal Islam. It isn’t really any different than the Solar Temple Cult or other such self-destructive religious phenomena, except that the jihadis have become politicized and so kill themselves and others on the battlefield.
