Expatica comments on this statement of Jan Peter Balkenende, Dutch prime minister,: “I think you can no longer say that the Netherlands is still a Christian nation in the way we knew it to be in the past. But even if no one goes to church any more this doesn’t mean you have washed away the Christian roots just like that. In that sense we remain a Christian land.”

Expatica asks the very simple question the NRC did not ask: “What does Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende mean when he says the Netherlands will remain a Christian country even if everybody stops going to church?”

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam: Nieuws : Home

Op maandag 4 oktober wordt, van 17.00 tot 18.00 uur, een openbaar debat gehouden over de kledingvoorschriften aan de VU.

Het College van Bestuur van de VU is van plan om bindende kleding- en gedragsvoorschriften aan studenten op te leggen. Doel is de onderlinge manieren van communicatie, zoals die in onze (westerse) cultuur als normaal worden beschouwd, in stand te houden. Handdruk en oogcontact horen daarbij, terwijl aanstootgevende kleding, gezichtsbedekkende sluiers of gescheiden onderwijs voor mannen en vrouwen die communicatie in de weg staan, zo meent het CvB. De rechtsgeleerden Guno Jones en Thomas Spijkerboer hebben in het universiteitsblad Ad Valvas op dit voornemen gereageerd door te stellen dat een deel van de studenten aan de VU kennelijk niet als volwaardig lid van onze westerse Nederlandse cultuur wordt beschouwd. “Zijn zij een potenti�le bedreiging voor onze westerse Nederlandse cultuur omdat zij moslims zijn?”, zo vragen de juristen zich af.

Over deze kwestie zal van gedachten worden gewisseld door:

– Halleh Ghorashi, Faculteit der Sociale Wetenschappen
– Fouad Laroui, Instituut voor Milieuvraagstukken
– Sawitri Saharso, Faculteit der Sociale Wetenschappen

Hoogleraar Nieuwste geschiedenis aan de VU, James Kennedy, zal het debat in goede banen leiden.

Sometimes something and some persons are bigger than life. One of those people is Stephen
Demetre Georgiou, son of a Greek Cypriot father and a Swedish mother who changed his name into Cat Steven when his music career took off in the 1960s and 1960s. And who again changed his name, into Yusuf Islam, when he converted to islam and started to work for all kinds of peacefull and charity things, leaving the world of sex, drugs and rock’n roll behind. And now the the same man is a threat to US national security and therefore not allowed to enter the country.
